One reason I've been pushing so hard for people to engage in local politics is bc VA is basically two different states. The County Supervisor we elected yesterday wants to work with the state legislature to enact laws allowing municipalities to pass their own gun laws superceding the state laws. So, if the GOP takes control of the state govt at some point, our very blue county can at least protect itself with stronger gun laws Yup
An example, the neighboring town had a school levy that failed to pass by 10 votes. I think there were something like 30k voters in a town of 90k.
Local politics are SO important

Ahh! I’m so happy about the VA results! I didn’t register to vote here so that I can keep voting in my hometown’s elections (we’ll go back someday), and I hate that feeling like I could be *doing* something instead of just watching the TV on election night. Thank you for all your hard work, dc2london !! On a side note, my super Trump hometown in IA just elected a young progressive mayor and I’m so happy. People my age started a write-in campaign for him and then voted like crazy. He got more than the total number of votes in the last mayoral election. He’s sending a clear message to the old white guys that their world is changing. 1) I am trying to triangulate your hometown without being a creep. I just want to know what places in my state are kicking ass. 2) One of our suburbs elected its first female mayor and it was a race between two women. I am stoked for the progress in our state. There were a lot of dems elected to city councils and school boards yesterday. It gives me hope since we tend to be so red on local levels. I have a lot of hope for my hometown too. There are a lot of people I grew up with who were frustrated and left but are now returning to raise their own kids and make things better. Women are finding a lot of encouragement in small business and politics. When H first brought up moving back I was very HELL NO but after talking to our old friends, I'm excited about it! IA is such a weird place to explain politically, isn't it? It's like they really like progressive ideals but then also Steve King.

The hottest race in MN yesterday was about Saint Paul trash collection - and municipal collection won. Hopefully I can stop hearing about trash in all the neighborhood groups now.

I hope so? But who knows. It actually went to the state supreme court to get the referendum on the ballot.

We lead the way in so many things but our state government (and Steve King) is such a dumpster fire. I hold out a lot of hope for the future. The kids I see are really progressive and motivated. Areas that were previously so very red are turning purple and even blue, in some cases. I've lived in the state my whole life, save for a 3 year stint I lived in Seattle, and have been pretty happy here. I look forward to my kids growing up here.

I get disheartened seeing pro-trump garbage spewed by a few vocal groups, but then my heart is warmed by the good being done by progressives and the actions of our youth. I've also been in Iowa most of my life, except a 2 year stint in SC. When we moved back it was to NE Iowa, and then eventually back to my hometown - and yes roloma you may have me partially triangulated We really do (mostly) love it here, and have high hopes for Iowa's future.

Sorry Rs, you don't get to claim any high ground about electing a woman. There are too many anti-abortion people in the state who would never, ever vote for a dem. I am hoping we see a quick turnaround. The other issue is finding a viable Dem to challenge for the governorship. We have a mess there. I really thought we had it this last election but alas...here we are. Trust that I will be fighting like hell to get Joni voted out this next go around! I just hope we have a good candidate to challenge her.

This was very interesting re: trash vote.
The pink/red areas are mostly lower income areas with higher number of non-english speakers and historically lower voter turnout. I voted yes, but am in a pink area.

We voted on 3 things. •To extend the budget override for elementary to keep art music pe etc. This wont cost anything extra so should pass. •to approve a bond for high school which would raise my property taxes about $200. Anything to raise taxes likely wont pass. •to approve same high school district to sell, rent, lease or exchange school property that is at the far west side of the large district within a couple miles of an existing property. There were no statements pro or con about this so idk. All 3 things passed. The continuation of the budget override for the elementary school district, to keep art music PE passed by only 30 votes!

I don't really post on the Politics board, but we had an intense vote today in Louisiana and I'm stressed while we wait for the results. Trump was in my city Thursday night to campaign for the Republican mayor running even though our Democratic mayor has been really amazing for our state. But man, wouldn't it be fantastic if the two states Trump did campaign rallies in went blue?

OUR GUY WON!!!!! Trump made TWO separate visits to Louisiana in the past 10 days and his guy still lost. I'm ecstatic about the guy I liked winning and ESPECIALLY happy about how mad Trump has to be about this.

Congrats and fuck Trump!
