So the Minneapolis Trump rally- he is being forced to pay ahead of time because he has skipped bills on SO many other cities. Including El Paso, San Antonio and seeing rumors of also Dayton Ohio.
The arena where the rally is to be held is city-owned. So if he skips out on the bill, the taxpayers are the ones paying. Including for the police presence, etc. $500k isn’t unreasonable. And why should he have a problem paying upfront unless he plans to skip out on the bill? I can not believe this is reality- a president that won’t pay his campaign bills and a GOP that doesn’t care. And a Republican base that doesn’t give a shit.

I am going to say things and I hope they come out right without me sounding like a jerk or something. But, with the political divide having gotten so much bigger in the last 3 years, I think people are starved to see.....people getting along. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I think people are losing faith in this country and people just being kind to one another. I know I am. I get so lost in all this shit sometimes, and perhaps that is my own fault. I don't really remember a time anymore when there was bipartisanship or just like, getting along with political parties. It's all been muddied. I feel there is a political party to blame for that. I do blame Republicans.
I am not upset at Ellen for sitting next to Bush at a Packers game laughing. Yes, I feel she is privileged. Yes, I feel he did terrible things during his Presidency and I am not really a fan. I can feel those things and still feel a glimmer of hope that people can come together and watch a football game and laugh. Because everything is so terrible right now and has been for a while, for a lot of people.
I realize I feel this way because of my privilege, too. But it's hard not to feel like "hey, that's nice" when I see something like that. I don't know if this is coming out the way I want, maybe I need more coffee?

And I also agree some of it (a lot of it) is privilege— the ability to put politics aside because it isn’t affecting one’s daily life. But I do also think it can be valuable for winning “hearts and minds.” Which we need too, for elections, but also from a general civil rights standpoint, when so many rights are/ are in danger of sliding backward, rather than moving forward. So I get how, at a time when the Supreme Court is considering the protections of LGBTQ workers, it can be valuable for Ellen, as flawed as she is, to share a laugh with Bush.

I think it is fair to criticize her. There is just that part of me that sees it and does feel a little hopeful I guess. It's probably silly.

This is heartbreaking. And it was totally preventable.
Fuck Lindsey Graham and his legacy-defending sit down with Axios. He enabled this pathetic, cruel, hapless excuse for a Commander in Chief. I hope he never sleeps soundly another day in his life for this and all his other human rights abuses.
Turkey's President Erdogan officially announces the start of operations against "PKK/YPG" in northeastern Syria, alongside "Syrian National Army" - a Turkish-backed Syrian rebel umbrella group. Turkish media reports F-16s have begun striking positions at Ras Al-Ayn.

www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/11/military-officers-trump/598360/?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=the-atlantic-fb-test-1189-1-&utm_content=edit-promo&utm_medium=socialAll the best Generals think Trump is a fucking nutcase. "Military officers are sworn to serve whomever voters send to the White House. Cognizant of the special authority they hold, high-level officers epitomize respect for the chain of command, and are extremely reticent about criticizing their civilian overseers. That those I spoke with made an exception in Trump’s case is telling, and much of what they told me is deeply disturbing. In 20 years of writing about the military, I have never heard officers in high positions express such alarm about a president. Trump’s pronouncements and orders have already risked catastrophic and unnecessary wars in the Middle East and Asia, and have created severe problems for field commanders engaged in combat operations. Frequently caught unawares by Trump’s statements, senior military officers have scrambled, in their aftermath, to steer the country away from tragedy. How many times can they successfully do that before faltering?"

It’s sad to see really. She was such a trailblazer of representation on TV. I remember that first kiss on her show and what a huge deal it was. But, yeah, I don’t get where she is coming from on this one. He’s not just a guy with different opinions. Catching up but I had a good friend who actually got a job writing for her show a couple years back...which was of course her dream job of all jobs...and apparently she is....not kind to everyone in general and my friend high tailed it out of there rapidly.

lol. I must be a really bad Christian then. Too bad it doesn’t say “treat others how you want to be treated” anywhere in the Bible.

Ugh. I hope you don’t lose power at all/for long. I have several friends who are affected whose schools will be closed for the next 5 days. It’s kind of insane. But most of all, I hope it really does prevent major wildfires. It makes me so mad to think about all of death and destruction PG&E’s negligence of their grid has caused in CA over the past decade. Yes, I can’t even be upset because anything to prevent a wildfire. But it’s hard on people who rely on home medical equipment and also small businesses where food could spoil, etc. I just saw some of the schools that are closed. Including Cal. Yikes. I feel badly for the parents of younger kids who have to make this work on short notice. I think both my home area and my work area will not be impacted (we’ve not been included in the tentative maps but everyone has sent the just in case emails) so we will just see what happens around us. I just saw that Cal closed. I think they only closed campus once during the decade that I was there. I know a lot of people running labs and experiments who are going to be incredibly pissed off. My former lab would have had to get facilities to bring us a generator in that situation - otherwise, all of our animals would have died. ☹️

Basically our people are telling them they are going to die. We are abandoning allies to die. It's sickening. I felt sick when I heard it on the radio this morning. Trump and fucking GOP are basically killing them.

Can anyone dumb down what’s happening with Turkey and Syria? Is Syria in a civil war which is causing people to flee to other parts of Europe? What is the conflict between Turkey and Syria and how has the US been involved?

Anyone have any suggestions for kid friendly apps, podcasts, or websites for some basic news? My 5 year old is starting to get interested in the news (maybe I listen to too much NPR). I was hoping to find some stuff that will be on his level and maybe not as...depressing/graphic as our current world events tend to be. I used to use cnn student news with my 7th graders, but I haven’t checked it out lately and was wondering if y’all had some ideas.
