What do you guys think about Ellen's viral post? I love Ellen and appreciate the sentiment but I've seen it being abused by Republicans who are saying a bunch of "Why can't we get along" nonsense. I think we're missing that Bush was a different era (though still not good). I am okay with difference of opinion but I am not going to make nice with someone who supports Trump and Republicans in 2019. I'll confess, in our current climate of rising fascism, I find her sentiment "nice" but sorely misplaced. I mean, I don't begrudge anyone getting along with W even though I was never a fan but he is nothing like current members of the GOP or Trump. So. Not helpful really. I agree with her general sentiment but I am of the opinion that Bush amd Cheney are war criminals so .....this isn't like your neighbor who happens to support Mitt Romney.

I despised Bush's policies, I think he and Cheney are war criminals in that they allowed the torture and inhumane treatment of prisoners of war. That said I dont think he's a horrible human. I think he was doing what he thought was best for the country rather than his own interests. (Cheney however IS a horrible human and imo had a whole lot more at stake than Bush personally)
At some point we cant just define every american by their political leanings. She is well aware of his stance on LBGTQ issues, that doesnt mean she has to throw a beer in his face at a Packers game. There are people with close family members who 'disagree' with being gay be it ignorance or religious reasons, they choose for one reason or another to continue to have them in their lives. Its more complicated than writing off anyone who doesnt view the world the same way.

It did not go well. She was all “I don’t understand why people are upset. We should be able to socialize with others that we have a difference of opinion with” And I was like “but he’s a terrible human being and I think you’re looking back on his presidency with rose-colored glasses.” She just kept going on and on about how much worse Trump is and so I guess that means to her we should just suck up whatever bush did? It was insanity because she, like me, is a flaming liberal. I just didn’t understand where her head was at.

In the history of impeachments does the opposing party always win the election following the impeachment, is there a statistical analysis on this?

In the history of impeachments does the opposing party always win the election following the impeachment, is there a statistical analysis on this? No. See Clinton. ETA: there’s also no data for a statistical analysis. Only 3 modern presidents have actually been under threat of impeachment. Nixon. Not impeached. Resigned. Clinton. Impeached but not removed from office. Won re-election. And now Trump.

It’s sad to see really. She was such a trailblazer of representation on TV. I remember that first kiss on her show and what a huge deal it was. But, yeah, I don’t get where she is coming from on this one. He’s not just a guy with different opinions.

I lurk in the blinds thread, and I'm pretty sure I've read that Ellen is actually not a kind boss.
I'm taking her viral post as a "cover your ass" move. All those Ellen fans who voted for Trump get to feel better about themselves because all our problems are simply because we are not kind to one another.

So things are a little wild out here. It’s the end of summer and so dry and tomorrow it’s supposed to be super windy, so the electric company, PG&E, has announced they may be shutting off power to basically huge swaths of areas. It could be off up to 5 days. So everyone is running around trying to figure out what is going to happen and make contingency plans. It’s a little overreaction on the part of the news/local media but also, they definitely could shut off power and it definitely could be a shit show. They have done it a couple times since the big fires of the last two years but only to very small areas and only for about 24 hours at a time. So, if you don’t see me around tomorrow it’s because my phone isn’t charged. Lol. m.sfgate.com/california-wildfires/article/pge-potential-power-outage-map-wind-fire-14501332.php#item-85307-tbla-20

I have several friends who are affected whose schools will be closed for the next 5 days. It’s kind of insane. But most of all, I hope it really does prevent major wildfires. It makes me so mad to think about all of death and destruction PG&E’s negligence of their grid has caused in CA over the past decade.

Yes, I can’t even be upset because anything to prevent a wildfire. But it’s hard on people who rely on home medical equipment and also small businesses where food could spoil, etc. I just saw some of the schools that are closed. Including Cal. Yikes. I feel badly for the parents of younger kids who have to make this work on short notice. I think both my home area and my work area will not be impacted (we’ve not been included in the tentative maps but everyone has sent the just in case emails) so we will just see what happens around us.

But the midterm elections went very well for dems in Congress that year— pre impeachment, but post Starr investigation. But the point still stands that there is no real data re: impeachment affecting elections. Especially because Trump is just unprecedented in so many ways.
