Turkey's President Erdogan officially announces the start of operations against "PKK/YPG" in northeastern Syria, alongside "Syrian National Army" - a Turkish-backed Syrian rebel umbrella group. Turkish media reports F-16s have begun striking positions at Ras Al-Ayn. I am going to stop this right here for a second. RIGHT FUCKING HERE!I am so angry I can't see straight. This is absolute bullshit. I feel for the Kurds. I feel for them so hard. They are a Islamic society that is just like our society only so much more inclusive. Women and men share equal rights. Women fight in the military. They allow all religions to live in an worship in peace as long as they don't do harm to each other. They are fighting for their ancestral land. Yes they have been fighting Turkey for 30+ years. But they have been fighting for land that is rightfully theirs.
ALL THAT ASIDE! THIS MOVE BY TRUMP IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING DEPLORABLE. He has sentenced up to 700K people to die! He might as well be walking them into the gas chamber and turning the handle himself. Turkey is violating the sovereignty of Syria by launching attacks into another nation without permission. To create a 300 by 30 mile safe zone into Turkey which they will use as a way to settle Syrians as well as attack Kurds further into Turkey. LANDS THAT ARE KURDISH VILLAGES! And the real kicker is that Kurds are guarding imprisoned 2000 ISIS fighters and 70000 of their family members. They will have to walk away from those prisons to fight for their lives, only to be killed, and let ISIS fighters return to rebuild their Caliphate. Erdogan is in essence aiding Terrorists by removing our allies from the battlefield only for their selfish gain. And don't even get me started about ALLIES!! Trump has made us look so amazingly bad I am surprised we are even in NATO. Let me put this as clear as possible. WE WALKED AWAY FROM AN AMERICAN ALLY WHO WAS ACTIVELY AND PERNICIOUSLY HELPING US DEFEAT A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION THAT PERPETRATED ONE OF THE WORSE GENOCIDES SINCE VIETNAM.Was that not the mission? Stop terrorism? Imprison Terrorists? KILL TERRORISTS? The Kurds fought against ISIS for their own lands. And when they cleared their borders of that evil did they stop? Nope! Know what they did? THEY PUSHED INTO SYRIA. They liberated towns and villages far before USA troops arrived. The rejected RUSSIAN help. They counted on us to back them when they were just using machine guns and hand guns when ISIS out powered and out numbered them. They were skilled fighters that lead an American Revolution style victory on a foreign battle field. And now they are being assaulted by ANOTHER DICTATOR! Erdogan solidified power last year after the failed coup and gave himself absolute power. He is making moves that Trump only dreams of. Turkey has the second largest army in NATO. All from what we sold them. This is clearly absolute bullshit.
Congress should step in. Senate should step it. NATO should step in. Its time to kick Turkey of out NATO as they are now being rank in file along side Syria, China, North Korea, Iran & Russia. Kurds need to be saved. Turkey needs to be forced back. The main issue is we have bases in Turkey housing Nuclear Missiles. We got to comfortable. We should have seen the signs 3 years ago and started moving them out. We should have started withdrawing in preparation for this day. If we do not step in and right this wrong and I will have lost all hope and respect for what military principles and honor we have had for this country. Oh how we have fallen since WWII. In less than 100 years we have fallen from the heroes of the world, to the butt of a joke perpetrated by a Prime time television reality clown only famous because his daddy paid for it. This country is sick. REALLY sick.
Tell me Republicans. What is your excuse now? Tell me. If you are so AMERICAN. If your so "Hey this country is the greatest country in the world". Tell me if we are the greatest country then it must be pretty fucking great to abandon our closet ally against one of our strongest enemies in 40 years only to watch them suffer and die in the name of what is right. That's super fucking Great. America isn't GREAT. Trump hasn't made it great again. He isn't keeping it great. Its a nightmare. Its "great" for privileged white people making 7 figures and going to the store for their own groceries. FUCK This. Fuck this all. The blood of the Kurds isn't just on Trumps hands. It's on the hands of every rank in file Republican voters. It's on the hands of Democrats who voted for Trump becauses of Hilary's E-Mail server. It's on the hands of every Independent that turned Republican because they were tired of Democrats making progress and a "tax cut". And it's on the hands of every Rural American voter selling out to a man who will, in less than a year, get into a war with top buyer of the products they produce, making them lose their livelihood and property all in a poorly thought out and established trade war.
I may be a privileged white guy. I may work for this country. I am put up my flag every morning. But I can not and will not support the complete and utter cowardice of retreating from a battlefield of which we were protecting an ally, all under the guys of wanting to be reelected at a time when during their entire presidency, their approval rating never saw a number higher than 41%. I will not take ownership of the embarrassment this country now faces for abandoning an ally at the front lines all because I need a distraction from an impeachment of a presidency stinking of corruption, obstruction of justice, and gross hypocrisy. For all those who support this move or the moves of this president. Fuck you. Fuck you all the way off. I hope you have nightmares from now until the end. Because of you, you have created real nightmares for those trying to defend you.

Anyone have any suggestions for kid friendly apps, podcasts, or websites for some basic news? My 5 year old is starting to get interested in the news (maybe I listen to too much NPR). I was hoping to find some stuff that will be on his level and maybe not as...depressing/graphic as our current world events tend to be. I used to use cnn student news with my 7th graders, but I haven’t checked it out lately and was wondering if y’all had some ideas. I noticed last weekend that the daily had an episode just for kids. I was hoping it would be on the regular. 🤷🏼♀️ My kids are probably a bit to young.

How is your area holding up jaygee? It’s super windy here, but no power shut off. I obviously don’t want PG&E to start any more devastating wildfires, but like, maybe we could have a power system that doesn’t start wildfires? This is so fucked up.

I'm seeing a lot of numbers but not from sources with which I'm familiar so I'll refrain from comment for now

Can anyone dumb down what’s happening with Turkey and Syria? Is Syria in a civil war which is causing people to flee to other parts of Europe? What is the conflict between Turkey and Syria and how has the US been involved? Syria is in a civil war and Russia is using Turkey to engage in a proxy war backing up Assad's forces. crimsonandclover would be a better person to explain

Sonoma and Marin are the only places with shut offs so far that I know of. Of course, PG&Es website is down due to all the traffic so it’s hard to tell for sure. The areas around me that they may turn off around noon are the less populated areas (think the hills west of 280 to the coast) but I have two friends in possibly impacted areas. I think the east bay and San Jose will have a bigger impact. I heard they had clocked some winds at 45 mph and they were expecting up to 65 mph. I agree that it’s hard to know how to feel. I want them to do every thing possible to avoid something starting. But ::looks around:: all this chaos and planning has to be costing a lot too so could they just go ahead and start updating infrastructure in high impact areas? Well no, because it’s too late and they are out of money. 🤦🏻♀️ One interesting note is that my friend has solar panels but thinks they will still shut off the power and so she won’t be able to use the energy from her solar panels. I don’t know if that’s correct but I’m kind of like - we need to work on that because moving more to solar and just cutting the cord on PG&E has got to be a better long term play.

We got solar panels at the end of last year. I think it depends on how your system is hooked up- ours has a converter so we use the solar power for our home even if PG&E shuts off. But some people have systems that just send the power to the grid and then get credit for it. In that case I think they’d be shut off like everyone else.

There’s lots of lease options out there that don’t always work out so well for homeowners.

Science news! 20 new moons were discovered orbiting Saturn, putting it above Jupiter for total # of moons: My dd is going to freak out. She's going through a solar system obsession and has memorized how many moons each planet has, the names of the big ones, what makes Pluto different... etc.

Outside of the immediate repercussions of the withdrawal, I feel we are going to see very long lasting ones.
How are our allies ever going to trust this nation again?

I sincerely do not know. Getting a serious and dedicated President will be a beginning step, along with top notch foreign relations with trusted individuals. I feel like a lot of allies are willing to look at DT as a dangerous anomaly... for now. If he gets reelected and we don't start repairing relationships in the near term, we will probably lose credibility for good.

Dennis Rodman wants to 'help' with China-NBA stuff.
He appears to have an even bigger hard on than 45 for dictators.

There's new reporting suggesting that Trump may have made the Turkey move due to his business interests.
Ok. Fine. Can we impeach him for that too? Republicans have already expressed their outrage

Maybe Pollyanna here, but if I had Republican representatives, I'd be calling to suggest I fear the president's military and foreign policy initiatives, as I'm sure they also do. Forget other issues for impeachment - get them moving on this and maybe some voting alliances could be made for the sake of our nation.
Actually, I think I'm calling all my reps (all three Democrats) to say the same thing. Pretty sure Senators Durbin and Duckworth are ahead of me there, though LOL
