piratecat, how is it going? This weekend... I gave up because things came up but he just came out of the bathroom with his diaper down so... So... what next?? Our first day went okay. We started out rocky but ended the day with him telling us he had to pee with plenty of time to spare. I can’t get him to drink much so he’s not needing to pee very frequently which leaves me feeling like we need more practice. I’m really going to try and push more fluids tomorrow. I’m attempting when we’re home which should be most of today and tomorrow. He is distracted by TV so I’ve had to limit that. He had 2 messes yesterday within 30 minutes and doesn’t mind being wet!?! I don’t understand that but he wants the stickers! I’m not sure how this is going to work! Lol

Lol Mind had two accidents right off the bat too and doesn’t seem particularly upset by it but I think he knows that’s not what he’s supposed to do. We are not doing rewards other than high-fives. And talking a lot about listening to his body. The first time he told me he had to pee and used the potty he was so excited that he listened to his body and it was cute. Are you keeping him naked or underwear?

Cheshie6 being distracted is hard for us too, not necessarily with screen time but just any kind of playing that he gets focused on. I am trying hard not to prompt him too much so he doesn’t get annoyed and tune me out.

I am also potty training this weekend! DD won’t poop on the potty but is doing really well with peeing. I read conflicting things about pooping and offering a diaper for poop. I caved on day 3 of no poop when she clearly had to go and offered her a diaper for poop only which she immediately did in the diaper and then back to undies. Do I keep doing this? Stop and wait how many days before she poops??

DS was really resistant and for a while wouldn’t poop until he was sleeping and relaxed. I don’t even think it was about the diaper itself. He just worked himself up and couldn’t chill out enough to poop. It’s still a production, but at least he makes it to the potty.

It seems like this isn’t an uncommon problem with kids and I read they usually have an easier time with a potty over a toilet - I think it has to do with the positioning of the legs (which you can help by using a step stool for them to plant their feet on while sitting on the toilet) but also the feeling of your poop falling a long ways out? Blowing bubbles apparently helps them relaxes their muscles and can help too. Or putting an open diaper inside the potty?

The bubbles are a genius idea because she loves them so it’s worth a try! I’m trying to work up to sitting with the diaper on on the potty then maybe just open diaper in the potty then nothing.

J has been doing pretty well - no accidents today so far and we’ll see how the rest of the day goes after his nap. I’m still anxious about daycare but we’ll just see how he does and deal with it. At least it’s a short week and we can keep working on it next weekend.
It’s funny because he’s woken up dry every morning since we started.

No accidents today! He has gotten better about sitting and trying and actually producing something which I think will be key at daycare. I’m really not sure how he’ll do at daycare since he is very shy there but he is excited about it and at least it’s a shorter week. I’m sending him in with cloth training pants.

I failed at potty training!! I’m solo parenting (DH is on his ship for another 11 days out of 30) and my temper is too short! I also don’t think he’s ready. He likes the idea of potty training but when we were in there or when I’d say we should go he’d say no and run away. He did go in the potty once but like 10 minutes later he peed himself. It’s almost like he avoids going on the potty (I know he’s not)
I hope I’m not missing my window.

Cheshie6 remind me how old is he? My sister tried potty training my nephew a bit after he turned 2 and quit after the first day. She didn’t feel like he was ready and she got overwhelmed. She tried again when he was 2y 9m and it went much more smoothly.

Cheshie6 I don’t know that I could have done it if I were solo parenting. That would make it a lot harder and that much more frustrating.

She tried again when he was 2y 9m and it went much more smoothly. L is 2 years 9 months now. But he has a speech delay and possibly CAS, definitely motor planning issues. Honestly, I am not sure how much of this is I just wasn’t ready. We have two bathrooms but only one training potty. I haven’t done the research or read any books, I’ve glossed over my BMB‘s potty stuff because he seemed so far from it. He’s already behind, and reading it made me feel even more behind so I just... I didn’t read anything. From his speech assistant, our SLP, and all the books I’ve read about childhood apraxia of speech, the glaring thing they all said was these kids are usually delayed in potty training. So I didn’t prepare! We go on vacation in a week and a half as well. I had no intention of starting this now because we’re going on vacation and I knew it wouldn’t work out there.

I would not consider not being potty trained at 2y 9m delayed so definitely don't feel bad about it, especially if later potty training is typical for kids with apraxia of speech. And the timing has to work for the parents as much as for the kids so you could wait to try again at a better time for you, like when your spouse is home. I think different potty training methods work for different kids. Our friends potty trained their toddler by setting a timer and putting him on the potty every 30 minutes on day 1 and that worked for him but I can't imagine what a battle that would have been with my kid.

I agree with piratecat @chesie6, 2.9 years would not even be on my radar as delayed for potty training. Don’t be so hard on yourself. He will get there and kudos for even attempting being solo that long!

Cheshie6 I have a friend who's son is speech delayed and they didn't even attempt to try until just a two months ago (so a little less than 3.5). Because of his speech issues it wasn't worth it. And even now he doesn't tell her when he needs to go. She has a travel potty and brings that and if it's out he will use it. But it's rare that he says he needs to go. I wouldn't push it. He's still really young.

I just don't think it crosses his mind to tell her. And it may have a connection to the speech issue, which is why I mentioned it. He really only talks when it's important for him. That's compared to DD who talks nonstop about everything and anything. It could also be a personality thing.

If he's around kids like DD I can see who he wouldn't have a chance to talk.

He's a bit (maybe a lot) shy with other people. I was the same way (maybe still am), incredibly chatty at home but shy and quiet otherwise. But yea, I think also, just the rowdy environment.

I am frustrated with them because they took him to the potty once and he didn’t go, had two accidents with 1.5+ hours between them, and then they gave up and put him in diapers the rest of the day.
