We had a SLC Mormon, from a pretty prominent family on our bmb that struggled with infertility. She spoke often about the lengths she and her husband went to to keep it a secret. She said it is definitely frowned about to utilize IVF to get pregnant.

Holy. Shit. This is absurd and makes me SO angry. I know a number of people who went to school there, so I will definitely be asking them about this (none are Ob/Gyns though- so low probability they even know this exists). On a separate note- I love following Jen on twitter. She is awesome! |

If it were just for sex education then I can see it as being a useful aspect. Utah is painfully behind on sex education*. I also suspect the terminology is because the word “gynecology” is associated with sex, and if it’s rephrased then women who have not yet had sex are more likely to visit with the premarital phrasing. I do wonder if this might be a way (executed VERY poorly) for the Utah health system to try to identify women who are being pushed into marriages before they are ready?
That being said. Wtf. This makes me so angry. The prophylactic antibiotics and the inaccurate information regarding UTIs on that website should be stopped immediately.
I’m divided on the dilator use- and I’m actually very surprised it is being recommended and more surprised this patient population is ok with it before marriage. Women raised in environments where “sex is bad” is the mantra until suddenly after marriage “sex is good” are more likely to struggle with sex the first time. It’s hard to overcome the mental hurdle of “don’t have sex” to suddenly “have sex”. Purity culture can be very detrimental for women’s sex lives because of how it’s approached (using language that devalues women who have sex before marriage etc etc). All of that being said, I’m wondering if the dilators are used that often, particularly considering trends in purity culture generally stay away from anything in the vagina until after marriage, including tampons.
*ive heard some crazy stories from people about what they were and were not told. One that stands out, an acquaintance of a friend had her husband freak out on their wedding night and leave the room after the bride took off her clothes. He called his dad and told his dad the wedding was off because his bride was a man. The groom didn’t know women had pubic hair and thought only men did. His dad had to explain female anatomy/ placement of hair to him on the phone.
Edit: I should clarify- the above is not limited to mormons, and there are people who present the religious aspect of waiting until marriage in a positive and respectful way that does not devalue anyone or make someone seem less than if they participate in pre-marital sex. Unfortunately those circumstances are not always the case, and there are people who take the waiting until marriage/purity culture to an extreme that can be psychologically damaging.

ripper, did you catch up on wedding stuff this weekend? It was hands down, gorgeous. I am confused by how small it was though - not the temple thing but the reception. Rach said there was 600 ppl - LOL like hell there was. The same 7 people who always hang out were on the dance floor.

I saw but ONE Snapchat video out of all of them that looked like there were people on the dance floor other than the 20 SKALLADASHIANS. (Lol - that was an autocorrect! Weird since I don’t exactly use that term ever). I guess they only feed immediate family and then they move on the the cake and dancing? It looked like a long as fuck day, up at 4 am, multiple dress changes and not just for the bride. Diet Coke hangovers for sure. |
