Mick Mulvaney says we need to heal the nation to stop gun violence and stop the use of social media as a free platform for spewing hatred. Oh.

We've been planning ways to come to the US for 6-12 months with the kids at some point, but honestly, I don't know if I really *want* them exposed to this kind of culture, where they are taught at school how to react when a gunman storms in and opens fire and then the athletic boosters raffle off handguns at the next fundraiser. No. Real talk. I am a hugely patriotic person and also think it’s an amazing experience when children can immerse in another culture, but I would avoid the US right now. See what happens in 2020 and reassess. It’s not a daily nightmare for most people but it’s pretty damn stressful to be here. I’m actually worried about the public health impacts of this much stress and turmoil on our citizens, especially certain segments of the population that are more vulnerable to chronic stress. I would also be very worried about what your kids would pick up from other kids. I’m in a liberal bubble and am even challenged with this. Granted my kid comes home from camp saying things like our President sucks and he hates him (and worse) which I agree with, but I am not thrilled with the language or that he even is thinking about these things as a 6 year old.

What in the actual fuck is this? Too bad Walmart wasn’t a gun free zone and it didn’t make a bit of difference. Good guy with a gun argument fails again.

In both Gilroy and Dayton, the police responded within 1 minute but many people died. That tells me it is a gun and gun type issue and not a security issue. I know I’m preaching to the choir, but just thinking out loud here. This is a lot to process.
Also, if you are at risk of anxiety issues or tendency towards depression, please be careful with your news intake. I speak from a place of experience - this is very hard to manage with mental health issues.

It wouldn't be for another 5ish years, but because of the way the sabbatical system works (there is a sabbatical system for regular public service employees!), we would have to start the process soon. I mean, we could take a sabbatical and just stay here, or go to the US for an extended summer break and not put them in the school system, but I just wanted them to get a taste of the American school system since they are 1/2 American. :/

My sister just left Dayton and moved elsewhere this past week and has been in that area/bar. She said she doesn't think she knows any of the victims (She checked in with her people and my brother-in-law did as well), but they're shaken. So many preventable deaths and nothing will change if we can't flip control of legislatures at every level. Heidi Heitkamp and Jonah Goldberg (I know, I know) hit the nail on the head on This Week: While there is overwhelming public support for universal background checks (97% in some polls), there are fewer "gun sense" single issue voters than there are "gun rights" single issue voters so it doesn't move the political needle. And while Trump is not directly responsible for these shootings, he is failing in every part of his job. He is failing on moral leadership, he is failing on political leadership, and he is failing on uniting the nation.

I knew I recognized her name and couldn't place why. I remember this. So if you're raped it's your fault, now if you're killed it is too. Infuckingfuriating.

I feel like we’re on a brink of something and I don’t have any positive feelings about it. I literally feel if we couldn’t have changed after Sandy Hook were never going too. At least not without more violence. 2A people have no empathy for the other side. I’m deep in gun loving hunting culture so I can disagree with them and see their side. But every 2A person I know can’t see ‘mine’. Their answer is always more guns to protect me and mine not maybe we need to rethink the aresenal I’ve accumulated in my basement because guns are fun to shoot
It’s just don’t know
Also would not bring my family here at this point unless it was critical for them to be here

Tapper outlining guests who will appear on CNN to discuss the shootings this morning, and who were invited and declined: Hmmm... can’t put my finger on what the difference is.... 🙄 Saw that a couple of them are on Fox blaming video games. Because everyone who plays video games becomes a white nationalist and terrorist. Ugh. I've actually read an article that difficulty of game and not violence levels actually affect agression. So.

Honestly, every time this happens, I start looking for ways out of this country. I don't have the mental fortitude to keep taking it. At some point, I will lose my mind to the constant fear and anxiety.

What in the actual fuck is this? Da fuck is this shit? Go away Amanda Chase. You're an embarrassment to our amazing Commonwealth. And I live here and haven't heard of any mass shootings lately, just the usual gun violence (ugh, that sucks to say), so I'm not sure why she included Richmond in that.

For real, y’all, THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE. I know I’m preaching here. (And I appreciate the thoughts - I don’t want to make this about me though). But this isn’t the Mexicans, or the Iranians, or the Pakistanis, or whoever today’s GOP boogeyman is that they shout about on Fox. These are homegrown, white, male terrorists from Texas, Colorado, Connecticut, California, Florida, etc. I am so fucking over hearing how I need to be scared of immigrants or brown people when statistically, I’m much likely to be murdered by a white dude with a manifesto who loves Trump and guns and confederate flags.
Seriously, I wrote what I did last night BEFORE hearing about Dayton, knowing that at some point, it’ll again be in my own backyard. Ironically, Dayton is actually where my BFF lives. I texted her in a panic this morning, even knowing she 99.999999% wasn’t out last night (she is currently undergoing stage 3 bone cancer treatment and rarely leaves the house). She’s fine, but... every day it gets closer. When will it be my little town outside of Raleigh? It’s only a matter of time.

I do feel that our country is at a significant turning point. I’ve felt this way since Trump took office. The White supremacy and racism and misogyny that’s been lurking in the shadows is being brought into broad daylight. It’s ugly and painful and gross, and it needs to happen. It needs to be rooted out. I don’t know how long it will take but ultimately I think rooting out the evil will result in some good. That’s the belief I hang onto, anyway.

I know this is a minor thing to get annoyed by, but if there were two mass shootings in 24 hours and Obama stayed on his golf weekend and didn’t head back to the WH, Fox would be burning shit down. Trump’s not only still in Bedminster but posed for pictures at a wedding last night.

I’m so angry. I watched a good but frustrating segment on one of the morning shows about how doctors are trying to advocate after the NRA “stay in your lane” tweet. Then I watched Mick spew nonsense and deflect and the interviewer just sit like a bump on a log and not challenge his crap.
These mass shootings are horrible. But I also think about how the domestic violence victims that are shot daily. And how no one cares because it’s usually women and children. I feel like this is just another attack on women.
And then I think about how we all have to shelter our children and gate them in and hover over them constantly because we are terrified. And then olds yell at us that our kids never go outside anymore and that’s why they are horrible and I want to scream “well Karen, what do expect us to do??”
I’m so tired y’all.

Tangentially related
How the fuck are they able to take down and armed person who killed nine people in less that a minute without killing him. Yet someone unarmed selling cigarettes dies?
I’m so fucking mad. I’m so tired.

It was so hurtful to hear Mick Mulvaney call the shooters “crazy people”. And we wonder why people don’t seek treatment for mental health issues. We are label, shamed, dismissed.
And btw, racism and hatred is not “crazy” it is evil.

As a palate cleanser, I love this moment from Senator Harris’ campaign rally. I’m an avid user of the word Dude, so this gets my approval.
