Products - our cannot live withouts are white noise machines and baby carriers - I loved my Solly Baby for my summer baby and otherwise use ring slings for the first 6 months or so and then Tulas.
Mat Leave Tips - go on a trip!! It was so fun to take a vacation and not have to worry about PTO or vacation time.
Hospital Stay - they are basically prepared for "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" situations. Bring snacks for your partner, Chapstick, an outfit or two for you and baby, and a Boppy.
Extra! I was convinced we didn't need a double stroller and then I scored a brand new City Mini GT double for $350. I loathe using it in public places (I usually wear one kid and push the other or DD1 just walks) but it is awesome for walks around the neighborhood and getting me out of the house.

Products: best: rock n play sleeper, white noise (I use an iPad app), snuza alarm, the zip up jammies, Dr brown bottles, infant car seat (loved my Chico key fit), baby wearing stuff (Tula, Lenny, and ktan). Unnecessary: a crib lol, bottle warmer, a fancy changing table, anything with snaps instead of zippers, Mat leave: take it all! Hospital stay: ours was 9 weeks early and in the NICU 7 weeks so my tips only apply to that. Extra: car seats meet the same safety standards. A big factor in choosing one should be if you plan to take it in and out of cars regularly, size of the car, etc. Pick one and don't stress. I had a breakdown in BRU trying to choose my first one lol. +1 to zippers being easier than snaps! I totally forgot about that! I'm actually team snap... My DD had the chunkiest thighs EVER and it was a huge pain to shove her leg in and out of zippered sleepers.

I'm going to try to talk MH into taking 2 weeks of parental leave right away and then 2 weeks in the summer where we can go visit his parents or something. They live 8 hours from us but their new house is on a river. So that might be nice.

Now that you mention it, with snaps you can just unsnap the leg area if they have the snaps on both legs. This means their tummy and top part stay warm. Not bad for chilly January/February.
