We drove 16 hours in 3 days and MY GOSH did we miss that pacifier. Yay for giving up the pacifier, but omg for doing the drive without it. Your are a much stronger person than me.

It was a "thank goodness it's Monday" weekend in our house. Mother of PEARL, DS was in a 48-hour mood. DH and I agree it must be growth spurt time because DS is eating his weight in... everything. And losing his mind when he forgets to eat or skips a snack. Saturday I could tell he was super tired but he doesn't nap anymore, so we got in my car and just drove around - 45 minutes he slept, PTFO in his car seat, while I drove back country roads, trying to avoid areas with traffic lights. The things we do, eh? Hope everyone has a good week! Have done. See also taking the longer way home. I tried to make a quick pit stop home in between coming back from the movies and going to the ILs yesterday so DD would actually nap but she of course woke up when I got back into the car and proceeded to have a major meltdown. Just go the fuck to sleep kid!

Ugh. The ad blocker on my work laptop usually blocks commercials on Pandora. It's so awesome. For some reason it is not working like that today. SO MANY COMMERCIALS!!

I don't know if this is true for your family at all but I think there can be a lot of baggage related to language and culture for many immigrant families. It can be very complicated. We are fortunate in that I do not believe this to be the case for our family. My grandmother was from the States but was a Spanish/ESL professor so my grandparents moved back and forth between the States and Spain a few times. My dad and his youngest brother were born in Wisconsin but the middle brother was born in Spain. Based on overall family dynamics between family members on both sides of the ocean I think it was a case of my dad just didn't bother, probably because my mom doesn't speak any Spanish either. There was some time where my grandfather tried to help teach us, but he tried by basically refusing to talk to us in English which was not the best approach for teenager me. I can definitely see how it could be complicated for many families though. And I will always accept the possibility that there is some underlying "issue" (for lack of a better word right now) that I am unaware of. My kid feeling disappointed that I didn't teach him the language is one of the big reasons I want to teach him. I need to figure it out but then there're like a thousand other parenting shit I need to figure out at the same time so it's been hard.

And now I am looking at sleeping masks for my kid to wear in the car.

My contribution to the language convo is that I'm trying to teach myself Japanese and it's stupid fucking hard. I picked up German really quickly (for me at least) when I was trying to learn it for my last job as one of our main suppliers was based in Germany. That was a walk in the park compared to this. I've been working on it a little bit each day since the beginning of the year and I swear I lose more than I retain. It doesn't help that they have 3 freaking "alphabets" all with the same sounds but just different character representations.

My grandpa never had a bad thing to say about his parents. He respected them very much. But he is upset they didn’t teach him Italian. My grandpa and his siblings were first generation American and they just wanted them to “be American” sounds like it’s complicated That is definitely a very common phenomenon. It gives me feelings hearing about adults being upset with their parents for not teaching them a second language.

sheilathetank, I'm impressed that you are even trying to learn - good for you! I keep thinking it would be so useful to brush up on my Spanish but I don't.

It's all thanks to the duolingo app. When I learned German I did a bootlegged copy of Rosetta Stone on my laptop. I don't have the time to do the whole set up now. 10-15 minutes a day is all I can commit. Which probably contributes to my slow progress, but at least it's better than nothing.

I've been meaning to look into it for my H to learn Korean. And maybe I'll try Spanish and see if it comes back to me a bit.

sheilathetank, I just tried the first Spanish lesson and I like it so far. I have such anxiety around traveling to a country where I don't speak the language so I think this will be really helpful and maybe we'll actually finally plan a trip overseas. I could see how it would be much harder to learn a language from scratch though and especially one with its own alphabet and such. H does have some basic knowledge so I'll see what he thinks of it for him.

It definitely helps develop your receptive language. If I had someone to speak with i'm positive i'd get it quicker. I'm pretty sure YH will too.

Sorry about the baggage. I bet he will feel just as awkward if not more so trying not to butcher Korean when speaking to a fluent speaker.

J appears to be going through a sleep regression or showing delayed effects of getting rid of the pacifier. Or maybe he I overtired from a weekend of not sleeping well. Bedtime was not great but I’m hoping it gets better.

I finally figured out the secret to doing DD's hair without both of us crying and part of it involves me braiding it every night after her bath, usually in a french braid. I had never attempted a french braid until two weeks ago, and while i'm getting better, I still get bubbles, which the hair falls out of and gets tangled. I've watched a bunch of youtube videos but I can only find ones that are either kids with slightly wavy hair or of adults with way more hair than DD has and none of them are with wet hair. Anyone have any kid hair videos they recommend or any tips? Is this something I just have to keep practicing or is there some magical trick i'm missing?

Bedtime was not great but I’m hoping it gets better. I was just thinking how M (turning 2 in August) has been sleeping so much better in the mornings and then this morning she screamed off and on starting at 4:45. I gave up at 6:15 and then she fell asleep on me and is now back in the crib sleeping at 8:10 😑 wtf, kids man. I hope J gets it figured out soon!

My SIL has shown me a few times and I can’t for the life of me figure out a French braid. I just cannot get the concept for some reason. Grrrr it’s so frustrating. At least you are showing potential 😂

She is not always the most responsible kid, so she needs to prove herself a bit. She was very against it when we first brought it up, but then payment was mentioned and she was all about it.

Dh took all three kids to see that movie yesterday and according to him, they loved it. They did go to a kid friendly theater so that might have helped to have the lights on and the distraction of other loud people.
