Pain score added as a vital sign has meant pain meds must be prescribed. And docs dont lean toward motrin much.
Around Here Rx restrictions mean if you need pain meds for very long, you must have a pain doctor to manage yoyr pain. Or at least if you have a good doc for your injury or long term situation, then you have a pain doc that deals with all pain med rx.
And my friends pain docs do contracts, pill counts, and pee tests to watch his patients which seems very overkill. When my friend had her knees replaced she had been on pain meds for many years, due to walkimg around bone on bone no cartilage.
hospitalists didnt consult with her pain doc. She was freaked out about taking pain meds not on her contract cause she'd be dropped as a patient and not be able to get the meds she needs. I drove her the day after getting out of hospital to go see dr to get her contract adjusted.
My brother has shattered vertebrae in his back from car accident 20 years ago. The bone wont regrow and repair itself. Constant pain. He wants medical marijuana but nc...
My dad tried accupuncture, chiro, hypnosis, phys therapy, healing rock things in mystic sedona etc etc to avoid opioids and addiction. He was not a candidate for back surgery due to his copd they wouldnt put him under. Nothing worked so he lived his last 12 years in psin taking minimal pain meds cutting tylenol 3s in 4 pieces to take with motrin
We need better pain meds without addictive side effects.

And the codeine with motrin combo pills work so much better than codeine with tylenol (t3) for most people. But my dentist is the only one to ever prescribe that and it was hard to find at pharmacies. Makes no sense

That sounds really annoying. Did he have to pay a co-pay for the doctor every month or could he just pick up the script? Thankfully no But he started concerta when it first came out so there was no generic at the time so it was 150/month for the rx.
My husband is on concerta and it is so frustrating getting the refills.

I’m not questioning you, but the last part about people getting months supplies for minor surgeries I do have questions about. Does that really happen? It hasn’t been my experience but maybe mine and H’s docs are really conservative. Fun fact: I have a really bad reaction to Vicodin and can’t sleep on it so I don’t get to take it when I have surgery. 😢 I don't know about months' supplies but I've had doctors prescribe opioids even when I say I won't take them. The OB who delivered M wouldn't let me leave the hospital without the opioid, even though I'd taken nothing but ibuprofen for more than 48 hours. I argued with her about it. And then I returned them, unopened, at a take-back event a few months later. These prescriptions are written far too liberally. I was prescribed enough Percocet to last for 2 months after my c-section with DD. I was fully weaned off it by 2 weeks and had to figure out how to safely dispose of it. It definitely seemed like overprescription to me.

The number of hydrocodone pills I was given after getting my wisdom teeth out was ridiculous. I used them for two days to sleep through the worst of the pain and then moved on to ibuprofen.
I need to get rid of the rest.

Acute pain and chronic pain are totally different animals. They come from a different area of the brain even. Opiates are better at handling acute pain than chronic pain. In some people that are treated for chronic pain with opiates it is thought that they actually can increase pain perception over time
Anywho. In general (there are always #anecdotes) Acute pain should be limited to a 7 day supply (IMO). If you need more, you should have a re-evaluation with your provider so they can make sure that it’s still the appropriate treatment.
For chronic pain opiates should always be “second line” to Tylenol, NSAIDs, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, topicals, physical therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback training, etc.
They have been given out like candy although that is starting to change slowly and thankfully.

I need to get rid of the rest. I got like 20 after my wisdom teeth. That was still overkill. I think I got 2 week's worth after my c/s. I didn't use them. I got a month's worth when I was having back pains (I think it was a small gallstone that passed). Not here's a week of pills while we run tests. Just here's a month of pills, you should probably follow up with tests. I never filled this script. I also got a month's worth when I went to the ER for a panic attack. My chest pain was from a panic attack, noted as a 1 to 2 out of 10, and the doctor gave me the same thing he got after shoulder surgery. WTF. I never filled this script. So many pills I could have had on hand for absolutely no reason.

Nothing he says or does shocks me anymore, but somehow I'm still shocked that people are supporting him and not calling out his absolute and utter bullshit. He is garbage.

It definitely seemed like overprescription to me. This is crazy. In Portugal, I had a drip of some opioid for 30 hours after my csection and then I was only given Tylenol and ibuprofen every 6 hours. Like that's when I was still in the hospital. Nothing stronger than that was ever offered to me. It is a very different culture wrt pain.

Maybe it's because I'm excessively childish, but I am getting a huge kick out of the Devin Nunes' Cow on Twitter. There's some good comic relief there.
IRT the opiod rx, some of you have ridiculously liberally prescribing doctors. When I had my gallbladder out in December, I was given 3 days worth of Tylenol 3. On day 3 post-op, I had to practically beg for day 4 meds. It was all ibuprofen after that.

I got an antibiotic drip and 600 mg of ibuprofen three times a day after my C-sections. That was it. After the third one I kind of wanted more because I was really in pain, but when I asked, they just upped my ibuprofen another 200 mg.
And holy crap, all of your stories about even the "easy" health insurance cases or the "good" health insurance plans that only have $4000 deductibles a year are freaking me out. I've always said that health insurance is one major reason I don't think I would consider moving back to the US, but after reading this thread I think that's a certainty. I can't believe you have to pay all of that on top of your premiums and co-pays. Seriously, I know I'm preaching to the choir, but socialized medicine is (or at least can be) awesome.

Yes the insurance. Its a huge issue. Over the years the. Insurance with my company has gotten worse and worse.I paid about $5k out of pocket for each of my first two (born in us) and my third born in Portugal cost me 4.50€. And Portugal's system isn't perfect, but I'm not worried about these kinds of extra costs anymore. Before we left my son had to have two teeth capped and he needed anesthesia because he wouldn't stay still long enough. We called insurance and confirmed how much the procedure would cost, but we were only quoted the cost of the dentist. So we thought we were going to pay $800. Ended up being closer to $4,700 when we got all the bills. The system is so broken.
