It’s like you guys read minds. sophiegrace Cheshie6We are also looking at swim classes for the kids. We have a swim school that is actually about .5 mile from our house (just looked it up, 3 minute walk lol). But swim lessons would put us at $1000 for a 6 week class for the two. In my head, I feel like its going to be mostly them getting comfortable with the water etc. because it’s the group of 18-30 months. And I saw how my kids did with one soccer lesson. Haha. Ha. Haaahahaaaaa. So, in your guys experience and anyone else whose done them. Do you think I’d get the same out of me and MH taking them in the poop for a few times first and then signing them up for the following session? Or just let the pros handle it. Wowwwwwww. I just grumbled about paying $85 for 8 sessions for M. How about I just take really good mental notes and tell you what they say during class for the price of free. Do you have a Y nearby?

Well I feel like a complete ass. I mean, yes I felt like $1000 (for two of them, $495/ea) was a shit ton. But I also knew it’s a devoted swim school so I thought maybe this is what people in our town want and can afford? PDQ “wings over water Fairfield” We do have the Y and I hadn’t looked into but assumed it was only slightly cheaper. The WOW recommendation came from my neighbor who said she did the Y and the WOW and that she liked WOW bc the pool is heated, super clean, close, etc (all the reasons she liked). But, now that I realize it’s as absurd as it felt, I will also look at the Y. But if anything you guys kind of cemented my thought that I just take them into pool with us a couple times first since I have no idea how they’ll respond. Cheshie6 Yes it’s parent and tot, so we’d be there in the water with them. I’m also starting to realize that the town I live in is BS. I see you guys talk about pre-school and these programs that you can qualify for free, and either I’m freaking clueless, or we just don’t have that stuff here. The cheapest preschool we found so far is going to be $17,700 for Sept 2019 to June 2020. And it only goes from 8:30-3pm. So i still have after care I have to pay for, and three summer months of care. Like why the hell should I work even.

kleigh, in Seattle, I coached at an aquatic facility! All they did was swim lessons and teams and parent/child classes were $58 for members, $130 for non-members. It’s usually cheaper for classes that the parents are in the water with them! I was hoping it was an awesome class that they would take your kids at two without you being in the water with them. I’d pay for that!! The extra cost is liability. Lol My guess is that they figured out that they could charge people in your area this much, and people will still pay it! They should be able to afford a better facility, warmer pool, etc!

Also paging waitwhat and anyone else who travels with toddlers. I mentioned taking the kids on a one or two night trip.. DC is one of those options. Tell me about all the ways it screwed up your toddler when you returned home to routine, or how they slept during the trip, or what you would do differently next time around. I’ll +1 everything sophiegrace said. We basically treated our trip like we were home. I made sure we were home in the afternoon for J to nap (B was hit or miss but we made sure if he didn’t nap he had about an hour of quiet/unwind time). Bedtime was tough I will admit because sometimes the kids were so wired with excitement of being in a new place they would be up later than normal. I didn’t stress about bedtime as much. I did the first night and everyone was miserable. I spent like 2 hours trying to get J down and by then the entire night was ruined and I just went to bed myself. So I quickly learned to not stress about bedtime. I was terrified my kids would be broken when we got back, especially because I slept with J in a bed every single night. But they were angels when we got back and slipped back into our normal routine without any issues.

We were members for the lessons but cancelled because DS1 just wasn't enjoying it. We were also in the water with him, which makes sense it would be cheaper. kleigh, that sounds like maybe a cool place to take your kids when they are older and want to get into competitive swim? IDK, I was never a great swimmer. Does your school district have anything? Growing up we usually did free swim at the pool at the high school (it was the pool for the whole district). I bet that would be a cheaper option as well.

kleigh , it looks like your school district has preschool options, but it's not free and it's only 3 hours a day, 2 or 4 days a week. Which is what DS1's schedule is for our district preschool. Ours is free because it's a developmental preschool and you have to qualify with developmental delays. I haven't found any preschools (in my area) that offer full days 5 days a week, I think I would have to go to a daycare center for that. ETA: Actually your district preschool is 4 or 5 days a week, either morning or afternoon classes. Doesn't look like there's an option for full days though. And it says they have reduced and free tuition, but IDK what qualifications you would need to meet for that.

kleigh $1000?! I pay $20/lesson for O’s swim lessons. I can cancel at any time and there is no set number of lessons. I plan on doing it until he can swim lol. We lived at the pool last summer so I already knew he was comfortable in the water.

kleigh $17k for PRESCHOOL?? What in the hell. Do you guys have separate centers from your district that offers pre k? Like, J is going to preschool in a church nearby for $183/month. And it’s only 2.5 hours. In our area a full day 3’s program is not common (outside of a daycare facility of course).

H is FINALLY scheduled for an evaluation for speech therapy. It only took me 2 months of harassing the developtmental therapist he's been seeing. He wasn't on the schedule for this month so I complained and she is creating a slot for him.
Damn I've become a bitch in my old age.

Our public school system is 80% why we want to move. Only 50% of the schools start by 4 (the rest is regular K at 5) and only two of a dozen of the pre k schools offer full time options. To get into a decent 2’s program is $$$$. The one M was going to go to was 5 hours a week (T/Th 9-11:30) and a parent was required to “help” during one class a month. For $250/week. Thanks, but no thanks. I spoke to admissions last week at the private school she’s on the list for about my concerns. They start at 3 (the year N16ers are turning 4) and I was concerned she wouldn’t be ready or whatever. They told me it was all very shruggy guy at this age and not a big deal at all, so H and I decided to just wait until she starts at her permanent school. With the hopes we’ll be moving anyway and she can go to a decent public school somewhere.

Is the time change this weekend as big of a deal as the fall one? We usually let M stay up an extra hour on Saturday’s for movie night so maybe I just don’t do that?
Why is the time change still a thing? Asking for me.

If only the weather would cooperate and warm up. I'm don't think it'll affect C too much. It seems like no matter what time we put him down for bed, he is up for another hour rolling around anyway.

kleigh, I just wanted to tell you that you are not alone with expensive child related things. We got our tax notices a few weeks ago telling us how much we spent on the kids daycare last year. It’s was nauseating. E alone was $25000. It sucks. I hope you’re able to find more affordable options. As for swimming, take them on your own. We have a family in Eva’s soccer class that rotates weeks between their twins. So girl twin goes one week and boy twin goes the next. I thought that was a great idea. Maybe reach out to wow and see if they’ll let you do that.

kleigh the main points to swim right now (and I’m sure everyone, especially Cheshie6 can attest to it) is water safety. Absolutely not getting in without being told to, how to crawl out if at an edge, blowing bubbles if the face is submerged (so they learn not to breathe in), floating and rolling over. It’s all done in a playful way, but in the end just little things that give them little skills to build on. I definitely think you and your H can work on all those things with them.

If you ( kleigh) want, I could give you things to work on on your own! The twins would be in my aqua-tot lessons which goes over back floating, blowing bubbles, climbing out, getting in with permission, reaching for toys while you move them (like a front glide). It’s more me teaching parents about water diapers, hypothermia signs, asking them to integrate asking permission everywhere (bath tub, bucket, water table, lake, beach) because if kids only use it at the pool, they don’t know to ask at a beach. I even do a class on rescue breathing. You don’t get certified but you get knowledge. Edit: words.. sorry it’s long!

hangry Twenty five thousand dollars.... that... is more than I paid for my college education lol. Granted I went to a state school, but hats what hits me where it hurts... like so basically, college. I’m sending my two year old to college. Cheshie6 and sophiegrace THANK YOU both so much!!! Yes cheshie, anything else you have or any pointers. I will want them to have lessons at some point, but I *think* we can do the basics. On a scale of Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert - I’d prob put myself in the Advanced level (certainly not expert, but VERY comfortable) and if I include my mom, she’s taught all my nieces and nephews (13 of them) to swim entirely on her own. I’m definitely siting this session out and I’ll save that $1k until the kids have some familiarity with the water.
