I don’t think it changes the consequences he should face, but Herring’s statement is at least thoughtful and says important things.

I'm really excited by this line of questioning by Rep Jeffries calling out Dr. Malcolm's Chair being established by the NRA Foundation. I find it highly improbable that she is unaware of the NRA's support for her chair.

My last position was fundraising at an HBCU and getting funded chairs was part of the imperative moving forward - specifically because it's hard to recruit "big names" who bring big money (like NIH and grants, etc) to your institution if you can't point to the endowed chair that will help support them and their research over the years. My experience at another university was similar. Well funded Chairs throw off $$ that goes into your annual pot and you directly benefit. I don't believe for a single second that she is clueless as to the NRA's support for her Chair.

I’m getting really ticked off that the narrative is now that leaders in VA have racist pasts. Like, no. Leaders across the US have racist pasts and presents. Nowhere is immune from this.

Collins is really concerned about people thinking about shooting themselves and walking across the street to give their guns to the neighbor.
Well gee, if my neighbor came to me and told me they were going to hurt themselves, the first thing I would do would be call 911 and then the authorities would take possession of the firearms so its not the neighbors PROBLEM. hes a moron

I'm reckoning with my privilege on this. I've spent most of the last decade in a liberal Virginia bubble outside D.C. We elect some democrats to Richmond and send a few more women to Capitol Hill and we're doing what it takes, right? No... we're not.

I think this week is driving me to stop somewhere on my way home for a snack. I will eat my anxiety and then also get it out riding my bike later. This will work right?

Yeah I mean, let's take a magnifying glass to the people who represent me here in Indiana and see what shakes out, shall we? Even here in CA, I’m sure what is hidden in plain sight is horrifying. We’ve just been complacent for a long time and us as white people need to do the work to fix this.

Because "off with their heads!" can make us feel better, but then are we only treating the symptom? Is there room in the future for a Mark Herring to stand up and say, "I know what I did was wrong and this is how I have and will continue to make substantive change?" I don't know. I read a lot of, "This could have gone differently if..." re: Gov. Northam on Twitter over the weekend. And can't but wonder if the "if..." is what Herring did today.

Where I am right now is that it is both: fix the systemic problems AND have consequences for people who have racist pasts or commited sexual assault or any or bad stuff. Northam and Herring can repent as private citizens. They don’t need to hold office anymore. There are qualified people for those jobs that don’t have this history and our system has not been set up to elevate those people but we need to demand it from now on.

BAM!!!!! Art Acevedo just slammed Gaetz!
I thought I was at an immigration hearing and was forgotten like the kids taken away at the border.
Moves on to stats about crimes committed in his area by undocumented immigrants.

I do think his statement was better, but he had several extra days to prepare it. 😢 I believe in redemption, but it takes hard work and time and when it comes to racism, I don’t get to be the arbiter as a white person. KWIM?

KWIM? I do know what you mean and I feel lost in all of this. My feelings of conflict came out of a conversation with two WOC in a Facebook group; my instinct is to toss them all out on their heads but who does that help? Legislatively speaking, not the disenfranchised.

KWIM? I can’t bold but your last line is the key for me. If they’ve lost the trust of their constituents of color, that’s a breaking point. I listen to Black constituents who want them gone and that’s all I need to know. Same with Fairfax and women.

I honestly think it’s not up to us, as white women, to determine whether or not he can move forward. Retribution and forgiveness, in my mind, can only be given by those who were directly affected by the wrongdoing. I feel the same way about men trying to forgive or exonerate the actors/politicians accused of sexual assault or harassment. Not your call, bro.

I'll also say, I fully believe Mark Herring didn't come forward about this out of the goodness of his heart. I think there was another takedown coming and he wanted to get ahead of it. This really sucks and I agree with everything you all are saying too.

I've kinda stayed out of this because I just have no words. I feel really bad for our VA peeps and all POC who have been really truly betrayed and hurt by the events of the last four days.
As for a coordinated attack. Regardless they still did the thing.
I think in the next cycle you are going to see much closer vetting, at least by the dems.

He only released this statement because he felt he had to politically. I'd be more inclined to believe his growth of he had talked about it when it wasn't a political necessity.
