I just got the email that kindergarten registration is in two weeks. ::cue breathing into bag:: I don't know what registration entails aside from the paperwork, but I am hoping there will be some Q & A since it happens all day at the assigned elementary school.

I just found out I’m working at 4am tomorrow. I work until 6/7pm tonight. I know you are all jealous. nam2013 I totally thought I responded earlier but it looks like I didn’t. I would do the 4. That way you can each wrangle one kid by double duty if needed.

We had the Q&A for lo’s school he’s currently going to. I was hoping to go to public at kindergarten but it looks like his current school is the best for our schedules. Plus small class size. This years kindergarten class is 8 kids

It’s scary at first but once you realize you don’t have to attach payment to that registration form, it’s fantastic! Around here, we congratulate each other on our “raise” each time a kid starts kinder.

I went ahead and scheduled M an appt with the pedi this afternoon. I know I'll probably have to wait forever there but at least I can harass her about getting a hold of the GI. It's been a week. They need to do something! That pool girl needs a break from this.

I think there is either 17 or 19 kids in O’s kinder class. One teacher and one TA that’s with them all the time. He loves school.

8?!?!? That is amazing! An average 1st grade has 25-30 kids in it, with one teacher and no assistant. Oh trust me. It’s usually 40 kids here. Based on the Q&A last week LO would be 1 of 10 kids I’m not sure about the higher grades, but at least in our district, they keep Kindergarten classes small. Dude is in TK but he’s only one of 11 kids. They have integrated Special Ed so the kids with mild/moderate needs are in his class, each with a 1:1 aide. There are three in his group, and of course they help the other students as needed. Plus, there is almost always a SAHM volunteering (seriously every day, from what I’ve seen). So he currently has 4-5 adults most of the time working with those 11 kids. From what I gather, the kindergarten classes are pretty much the same, 11-12 kids. It seems like the older kids have 25ish per class. I would not be at all surprised if everything is completely different once you cross into LA county, though.

There's also a reading specialist assigned to each class and they have their extras - gym, library, music - outside of the classroom. His teacher seems to have a pretty good grasp of the personalities in class and their individual strengths and weaknesses. I can't imagine him thriving in a class of 30 or 40! ETA: Goldi reminded me that there are Moms in the class volunteering on a regular basis

lahdeedah sorry M2 hasn’t turned a corner yet. Dude and X are both looking rough. I’m picking Atticus up from school a little early so he can rest. No pint in getting X at that time because it’s during his nap. X has feeding therapy tomorrow morning and in the afternoon he possibly will do an intake evaluation with the county for their recommendations on additional services. I’m waiting for the social worker to confirm that appointment.

They have a second grader reading buddy, library visits once a week, and their designated STEAM project work each week. They made blueprints and buildings out of old Amazon boxes, and they have a 3D printer they get to use sometimes. Pretty neat! Dude could not function in a class that size. Absolutely impossible. As it is, he still goes to the quiet corner for the noise-cancelling and headphones and a book so he can take a break fairly often.

I hope all the sick kiddos feel better! I know our class sizes here are very small. They do stay that way until 8th grade here.

I’m sad that M will be leaving his current school. We would still have to pay if he went to kinder, but it’s a great school.

Last year due to circumstances Ds had 32 kids in his class, this year it’s 21 (smaller than normal) I must say, both last year’s teacher and his current teachers are amazing. They have an aid than comes when they paint, bake bread, arts & craft and a special eurythmics teacher. I think they have a remedial teacher walking around at school, but I’m not sure how often she’s there. All in all, I love this school. It couldn’t have been a better fit for ds.

Pete has work meetings every night this week.

I think I asked before, but #mombrain, when will your kids go to 1st grade? Most of us will do kindergarten starting in August/September of this year then 1st grade in August/September of 2020. A few states have earlier cut offs so that’s why a few are already in kinder.

So the school LO is assigned to averages 25 each year. They didn’t say how many teachers or aides. This school he’s currently in (private) the largest class size outside of preschool is 14 through grade 8.

I think I asked before, but #mombrain, when will your kids go to 1st grade? B starts Grade 1 this September. Re kinder class sizes: His kinder class has 17 kids, there is the teacher and the teacher assistant and there are 4-5 professionals, child psychologist, SLP, and a few others that rotate through the 3 kinder classes for the morning and afternoon classes.

I was thrilled that DD’s 3rd grade class this year was only 15, 4 of who spent a majority of the day in a resource class so most of the day it’s 11. Unfortunately, it’s not what I hoped. I love her teacher but DD is very peer motivated and very bright and there are not too many other kids at her level to push her. She fell just short of being tested for G&T but she’s the top of her class. Without someone to challenge her, she gets lazy. I spoke to the teacher recently and she offered extra work but that’s not what she needs. She needs a challenge and a challenger. It appears most of her classmates don’t even do the basic assigned work and she appoints herself to save them all and while I’m happy she’s kind and helpful, I’m not sure she is getting the academics she needs.

Most schools would have had ds start 1st grade this August/September. This type of school handles a different cut off, which I’m happy with.

I think I asked before, but #mombrain, when will your kids go to 1st grade? Josie will start first grade in the 2020-2021 school year. I think that will be the case with most kids on this board, however, Josie was eligible to go for the 2019–2020 school year, like a lot of the others on the coast who started K this year.

Cadence's school has the option of a dual language program. They have both Spanish and Vietnamese. I think it would be good to get her started on Spanish. I already use a few words here and there with her, but mh doesn't want to. I may wait a year and have her start in 1st grade. I'm still thinking about it, but the application is due by the 31st.
What do you guys think?
