I saw a headline that, according to Pence, Trump wants to bypass Pelosi for negotiations. Of course he does 😡

dc2london I’m guessing in town for the MFL... I saw a truck here a while back with 3 Trump stickers. What you saw is next level.

Ugh. The Christian school stuff is heavy with me today. I went to catholic school as a non practing catholic. I had a good experience. We are from a liberal area so even though we were taught the laws of the church we were able to openly express our opposition even in the mid nineties. Classroom discussions were lively and we were taught to think for ourselves. I had to take 8 semesters of religion classes but I filled it with world religions and ethics and a hilarious to me semester of “Christian marriage” where we yelled at our teacher for telling us you have to donate to the church you get married in even if your parents had been giving them money your whole life. That was a fun week.
Anyways, last year I found out the there has been 25 years of cover up of sexual abuse - multiple teachers and coaches, multiple students - all swept under the rug by the administration and other teachers. There are lawsuits and it’s in the headlines all the time. It happened when I was there and I had no clue. One of my teachers was involved. It happened for decades after I left.
It’s so sad to me that this place that was such a special place for me and opened many doors for me was so wrong and evil for my peers. It ruins so much of my experience looking back.
The older I get the more I am resentful of how religion is so intertwined with things like government/law and education and charity.
Sorry for the novel. Just deep thoughts on a Sunday.

Thanks guys. I feel better just getting it out. I just feel uncomfortable you know? Like even my positive experience had that lurking in the background.
Anyways, in other news I’m making my way through President Obama’s 2018 book list. I just finished Americanah and really liked it. I also listened to Educated and was blown away. I can’t say I loved it because it was difficult and intense but it was pretty incredible. I feel like I live on a different planet from the author. And now I’m about 5 hours into the audiobook of Becoming and I never want it to end. Michelle Obama is a warm hug. I relate to her so much.

Meh I watched this as it was being read on cnn. I don’t believe he was trying to stay calm. I’ve seen that smirk on my own teen and it’s not because he was calm Second he is still there to rally to make some people feel less than. And to take away rights. Third the whole thing reads as sorry not sorry to me

Things that were said by the other group are not ok.

He was standing in front of a man who was trying to keep the two groups separated and was in his face. He and his privileged buddies and entitled parents surrounded that entire group trying to intimidate them.

So generally all these marches are permitted events that trigger additional federal law enforcement officers to be on duty. Because of the shut down all permits were cancelled by the National Park Service. Bc the marches (For Life and Indigenous Peoples on Friday and the Women’s March on Saturday) are all “first amendment demonstrations” they were able to proceed with their marches without the NPS’s supervision nor support. The LEOs that usually work these events are HIGHLY trained in crowd control and deescalation practices. (I’m not saying that they don’t have the same issues with racism and use of force as other PDs, but that’s a different can of worms. I do want to acknowledge that though.) The LEOs are working with shoe-string staffing between the shut down and officers electing not to come in (many have second jobs that are happy to pay them). Park Rangers that are usually around, keeping the crowds moving, are also furloughed. I’m not saying this couldn’t have happened without the shutdown, but I think we’ll start to see more and more of these situations on the Mall - especially with the number of kids in MAGA hats coming on their spring break trips and more protesters once the weather gets nicer.
I’m so so glad that it didn’t escalate to violence bc there’s no one to come and help.

Yeah, this is where I'm at with all of it. Wearing a MAGA hat to attend a March for Life rally is suggestive of an overall lack of concern for other people's rights.

This was my immediate take on that statement- it’s well-written and professionally vetted and there is a significant amount of money behind it.

Also...I’d still like to know why politics are involved in a school-sponsored event. No way I’d have been allowed to be walking around school or a school event in a political T-shirt- at a similar school in a similar area- so what makes the MAGA hats ok?

And here is the other thing that’s been bugging me about this statement. If someone is harassing you, do you start chanting back at them? Your “positive school chants”? Or do you move on? Because, to me, by chanting back it seems like the CovCath kids were looking to escalate- not end- the encounter.
Or is that only the lesson they teach to girls?

Well Pence was their speaker last year and attended this year I think. Trump makes a video appearance. So.
