I've been with MH for 8.5 years and have been able to avoid staying overnight with his parents. It is soooooo awkward. Once ever, and that was 11 1/2 years in when our power went out in early March. I won't say it was awful, just that DH is now a professional at the generator.

lfig literally the least I can do! How's your park holding up? I can't believe that people are still going..people are going without pay, you can survive without going to a park for a bit for recreation. Our park is doing pretty good. We’ve had a few minor incidents but for the most part it’s not been bad. It is getting kinda trashy in some locations because some people are assholes and think littering is cool. The area we are in, the NPS is not well liked by a lot of the locals because of the way the government obtained the land back in the 60’s when our park was established. So a lot of those people have held grudges and taught their families how evil we (the nps) are. So those are usually the people who trash our park, damage the resources, and cause destruction of property. So times like this they want to “stick it to the nps”.

lfig did you hear about the person that died at Yosemite and wasn’t discovered for days because there’s no patrols? This is all just crazy! How are you guys holding up on that? You have so much going on right now and with this economic insecurity it must be so hard. I did hear about that! They have patrols, but just can’t cover everywhere like usual because it’s limited. Probably half staffed with LE. And no one else. So more areas to cover. I joked that with what S has going on right now, at least I don’t have to take any leave. I’m out of sick leave. I have about 260 hours of annual leave and another 120 hours of reward time off. But I hate dipping into it. This year I’ve had to use more leave than ever! I’m getting nervous as this drags on and when I get back home from STL later this week I will probably be checking in with some of our small town businesses to see if anyone needs some temporary help. We are going to need some kind of income coming in. MH still has to work with no pay right now so he can’t go do anything else right now. But I’m nervous about this dragging on for a while. This is teaching me the importance of saving better (something we are not good at)! I'm sorry you guys have to deal with this. I fought with my dad earlier because he says since you'll get back pay once it's over it's no big deal. Uh except you still have to buy groceries and pay bills while you wait for that to happen!

We had a mini family reunion today at a funeral. My aunt (who was married to my mom’s brother who passed 25 years ago) lives in Chicago with her 2 kids, my cousins. We don’t see them real often (they hadn’t met S before). But my aunts brother passed away so we went to pay our respects and then after we went to a bar and grill place that was more of a bar. I felt like the girl on Sweet Home Alabama...”you have a baby...in a bar”. But it was good to visit with them. I wasn’t expecting to go to a funeral so I didn’t have any nice clothes packed. So I was in jeans and a sweater. 😬.
Tomorrow we are going to go over to my other cousins house and play (she has a 4 year old and 2 year old). Then tomorrow night is the sleep study.

Trump made a comment about federal workers need to adjust to not getting paid or something along those lines...so I wonder if I can tell my mortgage lender that...they need to adjust to not getting my mortgage.

Most likely the furloughed people will get paid too. They have in the past. But it’s not guaranteed. In 2013 I was 100 months pregnant when we shutdown for I think close to 3 weeks. I did not work, but got my pay before MH who did work. It took almost 2 months till he got his back pay. I think that might have been an error on HR’s part at our park though, but still frustrating. I also heard that there is a lawsuit to try and get double pay for those considered essential and working right now without pay.

OPM sent something out last week suggesting ways to cut costs while being unpaid. One was negotiate with you landlord to do some chores to get a discount on your rent. 🤔

I have a family member who works for the government. It was suggested to his department that they create and sell artwork for money. His job has nothing at all to do with art but if anyone has been thinking of buying art from a non-artist, let me know.

Re the shutdown. Thankfully MH is DOD and that budget is already approved. I was very thankful he got paid last week but he's been on vacation so it hasn't really clicked that he could have been furloughed.
I think it has been rare for employees to not get back pay. If they worked they should get paid (like tsa) but less likely if you aren't working (theoretically). Any other president I would say they would issue back pay because it wasn't the employee at fault. But with this president I hate to think about his response.
Also, I think there may be some days prior to the shutdown that people aren't paid for because payroll is shutdown. But I may wrong about that.

Basically on dec 26, employees had to go do shutdown procedures, payroll was updated and processed and sent in. But I know all agencies may not have been able to do that.

It was just what MH relayed to me but that makes sense. This whole thing is ridiculous. In the past haven't companies offered things for furloughed employees like delayed payments? I'm sure with it being end of year companies can't do that

On a related note, I was thinking about how much immigration had factored into international politics in the last few years. Between Syria, Brexit, the Wall, Myanmar (although that isn't current immigration) .

Just saw on FB that a fellow Navy wife I know gave birth in the front seat of her SUV at the hospital entrance. Apparently they couldn't get inside in time; they enlisted some nice bystander to take pics and there's the whole L&D team, etc. One of the nurses as well as several commenters told her insurance will pay to have the car detailed, LOL. I wouldn't say this is my *worst* nightmare--and it's probably better than having a baby in the CFA bathroom--but it's up there. I’ve never had that happen when I was working, but one night my coworker had someone come to L&D. She went outside and brought them a wheelchair, ran inside to get gloves and call the nurse, by the time she got back outside (which wasn’t long at all) the mom had delivered in the car.

Hi! I worked this morning, then immediately went to a 1st birthday party when I got off. We came home and I’ve pretty much been laying in bed since. At first I was just tired but then I felt achy with a headache so I took my temp. I think I may have caught H’s strep, but it’s too soon to tell. I need to go to sleep.

When I was furloughed in 2013 my hours were cut down to 3/4 time because healthcare was essential. So since I was only working "32" hours that's all I got paid for. But in reality my workload was not adjusted appropriately and I usually ended up working more than 32 hours every week. Never again. Fuck our government. I'll walk out in the middle of essential work if it's 1 minute past when I'm being paid if I'm ever furloughed in the future.
And fuck off to all the ignorant people who think being a "nonessential" federal employee means they should all just be let go because they aren't performing an important service. I've seen those remarks too which I put in the same category of stupidity as they should supplement their income by selling shit on Etsy.

cagoldi they are talking about IVIG therapy if it is an autoimmune issue. Is that what you are doing? Yup, that’s exactly what I get. Although for immunodeficiency and nothing auto-immune. It’s hard to find a downside, IMO, and if they think it would help I would go for it. The side effects are pretty minimal. Headaches, fatigue, and nausea are not uncommon, but IME those tend to decrease with each treatment and they are pretty short-lived. My nurses tell me that’s common and most people tolerate it well. It can spike BP, so they monitor that frequently during the process. It’s low risk and high reward. Happy to answer any other questions you guys might have and I’m sorry you and S are facing the potential of an additional diagnosis.

But, if there’s any kind of silver lining I’m sure that S must meet her OOP max in January or at least she will this year with her current hospitalization so as long as insurance approves it you likely wouldn’t end up paying anything.
