The link I shared up thread gets pretty in depth as well and does side by side comparisons of woks she stole from. I believe she is the one who initially reported her for the plagiarism. Yeah, they reference it on the fanlore page. I think in fanfic you have some leeway from the work you are known to be referencing. Like in HP, I'm not shocked if some conversations are the same if that isn't something that deviates in your fic. Or with ATLA, a lot of Zutara fics start with the Southern Raiders, so the first chapter or two is almost word for word from the show. But to take a completely separate work and not reference it and quote almost word for word is not right. I don't think that they can be prosecuted for it unless there is some sort of material gain being made, but they should definitely be called out among the community. We need to keep our integrity.

I spiraled hard on her yesterday. When I start the show Ill start a new thread, maybe Ill rename this one because I can talk about this stuff all day lol. Lol. I was just thinking that maybe this thread needed a new title. We're kind of far away from talking about the show

Yes 100%. Like if you are rewriting the story but diverging keep what you need I wont even bat an eye. And if you are taking something from someone else I better see a disclaimer in your A/N. Even when I take a note of something in my notebook that someone says in a fic that I like it gets labeled with the story name and author for reference. To do otherwise is shady AF. And fanfic is a slippery slope as you said earlier, we dont need to give authors more ammunition to take it away.

Anne Rice is another good spiral. She HATES fanfic. You arent allowed to post any Anne Rice fanfic on FF.net even. There are also a few other authors on the list as well.

Here's a list of those who both like it and don't like it. fanlore.org/wiki/Professional_Author_Fanfic_PoliciesI'm kind of surprised by those who will sue anyone posting it online.

Sometimes I wish that I had found fanfiction waaaay earlier. There is so much history there and while Im glad I stay out of the drama I cant lie and say I wouldnt have followed it with vigor. And so many good stories that have been deleted I could have read!!
I appreciate AO3 for that so much too, they work on saving fic from sites that are getting shut down and what not and literally archive stuff that might otherwise be lost forever.

The thing that gets me is that I WAS in fanfic around that time. But I didn't do forums back then, so I missed allllll the things. Like, I hung out on these sites they are talking about, but had no idea this stuff was happening. But I did flirt in an Animorphs chatroom with a dude whose handle was Aximili and said he was a 13yr old boy in New York.

Gosh me too. 2006-2007 was when I discovered the internet had fanfiction and also when my family got DSL 😂 My mom would not have been happy with me tying up the phone line spending hours reading fanfic online.

Lol. I got a little bit of time. The computer was in my parents room. I remember reading smut under my login and feeling so nervous my mom or dad would come in and see what I was reading. But my HS had 2 computer labs, plus 4-5 computers in the library that you could use as long as no classes were in there using them. I had free periods for that shit.

I think something that is really interesting is how protective and rabid the fans of these works get. Like they went for blood when CC got called out. They felt they had a personal relationship with her and could speak to her reasoning and all that. Like I know we have our favorites here (Isolation, Debt of Time, etc.) but I can't see myself going to bat for the author if it comes out they'd stolen their stuff from somewhere.

My HS monitored the shiiiiit out of the computer labs. My dumb ass went on some Q&A site like choose your own story, which started off innocently but quickly veered into NSFH (not safe for home) territory. We were only allowed to use my mom's login, and we didn't know about browser history, and my mother caught me that one time. I swore off everything dialup until we got Verizon and I was positive nobody else's login could see what mine was doing. Forever traumatized. Oh! And then, she logged onto my computer profile, read all my fanfics/original stories and deleted all the "inappropriate" ones (I never wrote anything worse than kissing) and sat me down for A Talk. If I could go back in time I'd kick myself in the ass and teach myself about freaking passwords. My gosh I forgot about that shit.

I felt the same way. Like I was reading some people personally vouch for her and then they have to retract and resign from board positions because they got it all wrong. To me, no one is infallible. What this cc chick did was bull and then to come back and say it was a homage? Instead of apologizing ——-is why I don’t vouch for strangers. It’s so odd to me how personally people take it and how narcissistic writers can get when they think they have some type of literary work.

Like my fic isnt that long and it will never be an Isolation or anything like that but I put my fucking soul into it and couldnt even imagine how shitty it would be for someone to try and claim it as their own. So I sure as hell couldn't see myself trying to defend anyone who thought that shit would be okay.

It's attached to the state university, so some of the undergrads and stuff could come through our building and use our labs. We logged onto the university network. Too much to monitor. My first foray into fanfic was actually through quizilla. Which started as a quiz site. God that formatting was horrible. I was so happy when I discovered FF.net. As to the monitoring by the parents, I was the good kid. They didn't think they needed to worry about me.

And yeah especially when you are being handed hard evidence and still just trying to explain it away. That doesnt even make sense to me.

Something I am getting out of this is I want to look up these books she stole from. I've never heard of the Secret Country OR Pamela Dean before, but she sounds super talented.

My first fanfic was a Bourne Identity fic. Then I never read anything else until like 2015 and got into the Hunger Games and didnt like how Mockingjay ended. The rest is history.

A dorm mate at college sent me the link for FFN and that's how I found online fics. My brother and I never ever did anything bad, we never snuck out, we never went to parties or lied about where we were or gave my parents any reason not to trust us, but alas. Haha.

Basically the embodiment of the Tyra Banks "we were rooting for you!" gif. I would not be defending and rationalizing such blatant theft of someone's intellectual property.

Why wouldn't you cite your source if you were trying to pay homage?? Even if there was some sort of "spot the quote" bs going on, literal paragraphs copied straight from someone else and no citing? She's so full of it.

LMK when you guys finish the thesis so we can talk about it. Have you finished? I found it fascinating, and learned a bit of the difference between copyright infringement and theft of intellectual property.
