I really, really like Mayor Pete, too, but have we talked about the shade he threw at the "I'm with her" movement? It was not my favorite Pete moment. I'll see if I can find the tweet and the backlash.

I read the article the pull quote came from and I think it’s unfair to say he “threw shade.” I’m irritated that they chose that quote as a pull quote. |

I think it was actually pretty softball criticism of a campaign that lost by 77 Electoral Votes. If we can’t reflect back about what we did wrong in 2016 without people getting bent out of shape, we’re going to lose again in 2020. He wasn’t personally attacking or shading Hillary. He said he thought the election turned into Hillary Vs. Donald instead of What we stand for Vs. What they stand for. I don’t disagree. Can you expand on why you do disagree? |

For those who don’t know what was said, here is the question and Pete’s response:
Q: One of the hallmarks of the campaign so far has been a really rich and detailed debate about policy within the Democratic Party. Is that what's important right now? Or should the Democratic Party simply be organized around the simple premise that Donald Trump is a national emergency and must be defeated above all else and that the policy particulars should take a back seat to that?
A: So actually I don't agree with either of those approaches. The problem with making it all about him is that's what we did in 2016, and when we make it all about him, then there's a lot of voters in places like the industrial midwest, where I live, who say, "Okay, but who's talking about me?" Part of how we lost our way in 2016 was, first of all, it was all about our own nominee. "I'm with her," was literally the button.
Then when we realized who the Republican nominee was going to be, the message became, "Don't vote for him." And we just left a lot of people out because it didn't seem like we were talking about the lived experience of Americans.
For the same reason I don't think that we should do the usual Democratic thing, which is experiencing your competition through competing policy proposals. I think that policy matters, I'm a policy guy. But I think that you need our altitude to be both higher and lower. Higher in the sense that I think we need to talk about values and principles, that's why I'm out there talking about what freedom and democracy and security mean before we get into the depth of any policy idea. And at the same time also be talking in terms that are nearer to the ground, really explaining what we believe in in terms of everyday lived experience and how different under us it will be than under them. And that's how good political narrative works.

I might pick Pete over Kamala at this point for the nominee (for me personally). I love Kamala, but I LOVE Pete. At the end of the day, they're my ticket no matter what the orientation. What a dream team. Their husbands also seem great, and to have a first man and a second man (is that a thing?) for the first time ever would be incredible.

Taking a break from scrubbing down shower tile and just made a donation to Mayor Pete. Was going to buy a tee-shirt, but decided instead to donate next month as well. I did like that the fitted teeshirt and am still tempted. That said, maybe I think it's good that if his campaign in concentrating on stuff, swag is on the back burner. Swag is fun; thoughtful policies and actions are more important in my view. |

I really like Booker, but I don't see him as a frontrunner. I was just telling my husband yesterday that I think he would make a good HUD secretary as he seems really passionate about issues relating to that. And if Kamala isn't it, she would make a fantastic Attorney General. There's so many good candidates and I don't want them to disappear after the election.

I’m in a bubble here in my New England gay community- and I don’t know how it is in the rest of the country (besides not as good). Can people really see getting the swing states behind this? More or less so than a woman or a WOC? Because personally I see people freaking out. But again, skewed POV here. |
