Last night went pretty well. We planned to let him cry for no longer than 2 min, then go in and rub his back til he was calm, leave, repeat until asleep. He cried for exactly 2 min, then rolled around for a minute and fell asleep. He woke around 1 so I nursed and then he slept until I had to wake him up for daycare!!! I am 100% okay with nursing once in the night, so I’d call last night a success. Now... to figure out how to make it happen again. He always falls asleep on the drive home from daycare which is around 6-6:30, but last night I kept him awake and he was soooo fussy bc his last nap ended at 3:20 so I know he was tired. I nursed at 6:30, then we didn’t do solids bc of Halloween, nursed again at 7:30 and ended up putting him to bed about 8, which is 20-30 min earlier than usual because he was so tired. So was it the lack of car nap? No solids, so he nursed more before bed? The Halloween jammies? Magic sleep fairy stopped by? Magic sleep fairy for sure. I mean, I’m sure Leaf 🌱 is right and logical but I’m just as sure that magic also plays a part. I think the sleep fairy prefers his Christian name “The Sandman”

clementine I agree with Leaf 🌱, it was probably the earlier bedtime. I have found with both of my kids that earlier bedtimes lead to longer sleeps. I also found it helped eliminate night feedings to move bedtime as early as 6pm (not saying you should move it that early, but the earlier the better imo).

I’ve been wanting to move it earlier, but I just don’t have time to nurse twice and do solids after we get home from work/daycare. I feel like I need to nurse as soon as we get home at 6:30 because he’s usually pretty hungry. And I want to do solids after that, but then I need to nurse again before bed. So that usually pushes bedtime back to 8:30. I don’t know. I just can’t make the timeline work in my head. Any suggestions?

If your LO is amenable to that? Or I would just do a small serve of solids as soon as you get home then nurse. Or a small bottle, solids then bedtime routine.

We might have to experiment with the schedule and feedings. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
Last night was rough. We tried the gentle soothing after2 min of crying, but he would start crying again the second we walked out the door and basically cried for over a half hour even with us soothing him, and finally fell asleep with the pacifier and me rubbing his back, then woke up 20 min later and I ended up having to hold him to get him to fall back asleep. H can’t handle the crying and is not on board with letting him cry even that much, and he’s making me second guess it too. L still had the sniffles this morning from crying last night (not like a runny nose, it’s the sniffles and can’t catch your breath from crying so hard) and I’m sure he would have cried a lot more if I didn’t intervene. Ughhh I don’t know what to do.

clementine sorry, the crying is so hard to hear. Second night or third night of any sleep training usually blows. Is overtiredness a factor? If so I would suggest an earlier bed time as a once off to reset.
