I’m the worst because whenever someone requests recs on something I always feel compelled to tell them how to get it cheaper. Like the bike thread I was like “here’s the way I made my shitty Craigslist bike like a peloton.” Or when someone compliments my outfit I cannot restrain myself from screaming “THANKS IT WAS $5 AT TARGET” Every item my mom purchases she'll either tell you how expensive it was (because status) or how cheap she got it for.

It seems like the recommendation threads usually turn into a general discussion about the subject more than recs specific to the OP
Doesn’t bother me

Real talk though, the peloton will be my first big purchase once we’re done paying for wedding shit.

I'm not asking my therapist whether or not I should go to Vegas. Should I start charging when I get obsessed with a product and won’t shut up about it?

Sometimes I am just so proud of my deals that I wanna brag.

This is also a prime example of why I have another place I go to when I need recommendations. Because it does go both ways. I made a thread here asking for London hotel recommendations and everyone was like “hotels are expensive, AirBnb!” And I was like “no, guys, I need housekeeping.” And everyone was like, “you can make your own food, AirBnb!” And I was like, “no, guys, I eat out every meal when I travel.” And everyone was like, “you can stay with an old British man who rents a room in his apartment to really immerse yourself in British culture, AirBnb!” I ... did not stay in an Airbnb. I do not always want to be immersed in the local culture. Sometimes I just want to be a damn tourist and do those things. By sometimes, I mean all the time.

Really we should standardize our recommendation threads. Here’s a template suggestion... Item: Budget: Proposed Date of Purchase: Reason: Additional Comments (100 characters max.): You should make a template for every type of thread. Isn't this what happened on TTC on the bump and it was the absolute worst?

My mom goes a thrifty step too far every Christmas. She wraps up goodwill clothes with the tags still on and as you open them she’s like “I GOT THOSE ON DOLLAR BLUE DAYYYYSS”.
She doesn’t need to buy used financially, she is just obsessed with the steal.

I like reading the recommendation threads b/ otherwise I would have no idea what was in style. I had no idea that camera bags were a thing right now because I basically live in an unhip SAHP black hole.
Higher end recs don't bother me unless someone has made clear that they are out of budget and the budget isn't flexible. I'm usually willing to go a bit over budget for something that is absolutely amazeballs.

I always find it odd when we have threads asking for recommendations on (small and large) purchases and posters post an item that is so far out of the price range of what has been posted and what the OP suggests is in their budget. For example... OP: Any recommendations on SUVs? I’ve been looking at the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai whatever they are called, and the Pilot. Poster: I love my Audi/Mercedes/Lexus/etc. ... I just never understand what these responses are about. I believe it’s a UO because nobody ever speaks on it in the particular threads, but it happens enough for me to call on it. LOL, yeah I agree with you. With the exception of me asking HE directly which SUV she got.

when I was in London i rode a hop-on/hop-off bus tour and it was the greatest tourist thing ever. we did that when we actually lived there because damn it those things are efficient. That’s always my first U.K. rec and people stare at me like I’m the worst.

I recommended a Lexus to GolfB because she literally said “I have considered a Lexus but it’s not big enough” so I recommended the bigger one than she considered. I didn't think anything of this since I mentioned it specifically. I actually didn't think much of any of the additional suggestions except for the Audi because I know how tricked out my dad's is and I was like lolno.

It goes both ways though. Like when I posted my handbag thread, I think my budget was $300-$600 or something and people were posting less than $100 bags. I’m like, “That is not what I requested”. Although... I did get a Madewell after my TB so, thank you. But still!! I love Madewell bags, I have a couple on my wish list. /relevant

But sometimes a budget is flexible. If you highly recommend something, I may consider it. The poster can disregard over budget suggestions easily. This, too!

I have no problem with the varying advice in most recommendation threads. You never know if a budget is flexible and it helps other posters. You never know who else could be looking for something similar with a different budget.
