I always find it odd when we have threads asking for recommendations on (small and large) purchases and posters post an item that is so far out of the price range of what has been posted and what the OP suggests is in their budget.
For example...
OP: Any recommendations on SUVs? I’ve been looking at the Toyota Highlander, Hyundai whatever they are called, and the Pilot.
Poster: I love my Audi/Mercedes/Lexus/etc.
...
I just never understand what these responses are about. I believe it’s a UO because nobody ever speaks on it in the particular threads, but it happens enough for me to call on it.

I've seen a dress one where the budget was $50 and people were saying here is one that is $90 I know it is over budget, but you can get more wears out of it................... That being said I see it on all the house shows and Say Yes To The Dress too. Although they are getting commission so I can see that some

I usually browse the recommendation threads but I would like to announce that I did stop myself from recommending the Peloton because someone asked for an exercise bike in the $200 range. I was really holding out for one of you guys to show up there when I first glanced at it. I'm impressed with your restraint.

I am slowly wearing SO down on this. I point it out all the time on the commercials. He finally said the other day he would buy me one if I didn't point the commercials out anymore

I recommended a Lexus to GolfB because she literally said “I have considered a Lexus but it’s not big enough” so I recommended the bigger one than she considered.

It goes both ways though. Like when I posted my handbag thread, I think my budget was $300-$600 or something and people were posting less than $100 bags. I’m like, “That is not what I requested”. Although... I did get a Madewell after my TB so, thank you. But still!!

No, GP, I am the solution! I said I didn't say anything!!! But I'm also a generally non-participator in 99% of the recommendation threads. Oh. I see I read that wrong. I just assumed you were causing trouble. Lol.

But sometimes a budget is flexible. If you highly recommend something, I may consider it. The poster can disregard over budget suggestions easily.

@gentleapricot I get it. It’s like “I’m planning a small vacation. I’m thinking of Boston, the Finger Lakes, or Maine”
“We just went to Paris and it was awesome!”

It started with a lot of “I would never!” And by page 446, the reasonable people were copping designer bags.

I just don’t feel like every thread is for us to let people know how we are living. I love my SUV but it did not fit the budget/seat configuration request so I didn’t say a word.

I’m the worst because whenever someone requests recs on something I always feel compelled to tell them how to get it cheaper. Like the bike thread I was like “here’s the way I made my shitty Craigslist bike like a peloton.”
Or when someone compliments my outfit I cannot restrain myself from screaming “THANKS IT WAS $5 AT TARGET”

I think you gotta take it thread by thread. I wouldn’t come in with a pricey suggestion if I feel like it wouldn’t apply. But then GolfB says she has considered luxury cars and it’s like ok... maybe the budget is a little flexible.

This is also a prime example of why I have another place I go to when I need recommendations. Because it does go both ways. I made a thread here asking for London hotel recommendations and everyone was like “hotels are expensive, AirBnb!” And I was like “no, guys, I need housekeeping.” And everyone was like, “you can make your own food, AirBnb!” And I was like, “no, guys, I eat out every meal when I travel.” And everyone was like, “you can stay with an old British man who rents a room in his apartment to really immerse yourself in British culture, AirBnb!”
I ... did not stay in an Airbnb.
