In a bit of a reading rut.. I am struggling through Gentleman in Moscow. I like what I read but am not compelled to keep reading, if that makes sense. I downloaded and started Joy Luck Club the other day when on kindle sale .. liking it a lot so far so might just dive right in. I also re-read carry on last week because those kissing scenes are everything. I love the Joy Luck Club! Enjoy! Also - Happy CNY. I'm sure there are lots of festivities to partake in where you are. May the Year of the dog bring you peace, joy, and prosperity! 😀

Yes, lots of festivities here: we laid Low today but tomorrow we will head down to gardens by the Bay for the Lion dance show. Looking forward to it as my Son is a huge lion dance fan and he gets amped, it is so cute

roguelily That sounds like so much fun! DS1 love lion dances too - we're going to one tomorrow. It's part of this little parade with acrobats and people in traditional dress. DS1 loves getting hong baos too...never too young for that I guess! 😅😂

I’ve been reading a lot of mystery/thriller type reads lately, so I decided to switch it up.
I just started Everybody’s Son

I finished Little Fires Everywhere and just as I worried about I liked the first half, but the second half fell flat and the book just ended.

I am halfway through Cinder, book 1 of the Lunar Chronicles.
It is everything my YA/fantasy/sci-fi/fairy-tale loving heart could ever hope for. I kept bypassing this series. Silly me.

I was going to ask you and filingjointly how you liked it I actually really liked it! I think her writing is beautiful. I would say it’s definitely more of a paced narrative than a mystery or suspense, so there’s not necessarily one big OMG but I very very much enjoyed it. I particularly loved the way the author changed character perspective. Sometimes it happened in the middle of a chapter but it was so seamless you almost just didn’t notice.

I liked it enough, but I don't think it measured up to the hype that I was getting about it, but it was a fast read.

I won! I won! I won a Goodreads giveaway of the kindle version of The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen. I enjoyed Farleigh Field when it was on Kindle First last year and attempted to get into one of her mystery series but they never really caught on. The Tuscan Child sounds interesting, we'll see!

roguelily have you read Grace and the Fever? I just finished and it was like flashbacks to observing/partaking in the 1D fandom. The author even says in her blurb at the end that 1D was a fandom she lurked while researching her book. It was a quick read and I did like it, but woah to the memories.

Carry On has been at the top of my list for months, but I keep bypassing it. I think I've hyped it too much in my head at this point. It’s really weird and not at all what I expected .. it’s simultaneously a salute to Harry Potter & slash fan fiction in general. Also After reading it, I’ve realised that a lot of fan fiction tropes/ frequently used words etc are pulled from this book. In fact I think many Louis Tomlinson -in-fanfic personalities is based on Baz (one of the characters in Carry On). I really know how to use the term “meta” appropriately in a sentence, but I’m pretty sure it’s the definition of meta. I haven't read the thread but isn't Carry On the fic that the main character in Fangirl was writing? I loved that book and I didn't know her fic was a book too!

byjove, lol. I was going to reply to your comment and went to check who said it so I could tag and of course it's you I feel we could be book besties. Anywho I am adding Daughters of the Night Sky to my list for sure. I picked up my first Rhys Bowen (HRS) at the library and another one that looks to be a similar genre called Murder at the Brightwell. I'd like to just curl up with these and read!! I am waiting for Elegy for Eddie from the library because I tried it twice on audio and I just can't get into it but I really want to read the rest of them.

Ok, so the answer is .. yes but not really. Essential Rainbow Rowell wrote Fangirl first, wrote the excerpts as Cath wild have written them. But then she realised she wasn’t done with them and wanted a chance to play with Simon & Baz’s characters from her own POV, not Cath’s. so said another way, none of the excerpts from fangirl are in carry on the novel. But it’s the same characters, same universe. It’s basivally fan fiction of her own fiction, which is in itself a fan fiction of other fan fiction. Basivally, meta AF Full disclosure, I love it for every reason but mostly the kissing scenes

Currently reading Bel Canto by Anne Patchett. My favourite podcast recommends it all the time and it came into the library really quickly, so i've started it. So far I'm liking it.
Next will be either The Vineyards or An American Marriage.

filingjointly, so far bel canto isn't grabbing my attention, but it is beautifully written I’ve read it actually, years and years ago. I remember liking it but not tearing through it or anything. I’m requesting Ann Patchett’s The Getaway Car soon though, which is just her super short memoir on writing.
