Now that there are some outside babes on our board I think we could use a thread for all the breast/formula/whatever feeding related questions.
Iām still pregnant but I remember someone (I think on here but maybe not) talking about this thing that sort of suctions on to the unused side while nursing to catch any letdown. Purpose would be to turn those leaks into milk that could be frozen for later. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I think I need this.

chriskoo I'm not 100% positive as I haven't used either, but I think you're thinking of either the Hakaa pump (this one acts more like a pump) or maybe Milkies Milk Saver (only catches letdown, doesn't suction)? Hopefully someone else will chime in who knows for sure though!

tbirdlove thanks! I think the milksaver is the one I was thinking of, but Iāll look into both.

chriskoo - The Haakaa suctions to your breast and is considered a pump. The Milkies Milk Savers are placed in your bra/tank and simply act as a collection tool. I used a Milk Saver last time and it was awesome. DS always only fed from one side each session and I had a strong let down so I would have lost a decent amount of milk from the opposite side had I not used the Milk Saver. I always collected the most from early feedings where by the end of the day there wasn't as much leakage from the non-nursing breast. A Haakaa can be used to collect leakage, but since you suction it on to your breast it does stimulate your breast to produce milk. If you start demanding more than your baby actually needs you could potentially create an oversupply. That could be no big deal or it could result in frequent clogs/mastitis. I plan to use my Haakaa at the beginning just to collect enough to feed baby the night I go to my concert (assuming I get to go) but otherwise I plan to rely on my Milk Saver only.

My milk is coming in š yay! Lily is feeding so much better than dd did at the beginning. What did you girls use to put on your nipples for soreness with your other kiddos? DD hated lanolin and refused to nurse if I used it (even if I washed it off before feeds) so I'm kinda scared to use it. My nips aren't too sore yet but I'm sure they will be in the next few days especially if I don't put anything on them.

brenna - I always liked Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter. I much preferred the consistency over lanolin and it doesn't have to be wiped off before nursing either (assuming baby doesn't mind it like you ran into with DD1!)

brenna +1 to the Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter. That's mostly all I used though, besides wetting them with breast milk and letting them air dry, so I don't have anything to compare it to.

mirabelle and meggriffin how is feeding going for you two? DD wants to eat almost every two hours which is tiring but she feeds so much better than DD1 ever did so I guess I can't really complain.

We are on day 12 here and Iām still trying to straighten out his nights and days. He wants to sleep and graze all day and is wide awake wanting to eat all night long. š“ Iām so tired.
Heās gaining last check he was up to 6 lbs 4 oz, Iām taking him to a breastfeeding group in the area on Wednesday bc he should be back up to birth weight by then.
A nurse told me I should be pumping 3x a day Iām barely getting one pump session in a day. Iām going to get a āsecond opinionā on Wednesday to figure out pumping goals.
My biggest challenge right now is managing engorgement during the day and getting longer stretches out of him in hopes that nights arenāt so brutal.

DD isn't wanting to eat much during the day either and eats a ton at night. The jaundice is still making her super sleepy so I'm struggling to keep her awake during the day for feeds.
I don't know how or when I'll fit in pumping sessions, there isn't enough time in the day and she's feeding so often I don't want to pump and then have her be hungry right afterwards. I'll be staying home so hopefully I can just pump enough for emergencies and for DH to give her a bottle if I am gone for a few hours but I have no interest in pumping at all right now.
Also I feel like everyone is all about pushing nursing moms to pump all the time, but the lactation consultant I met with in the hospital said that unless I want a stash for emergencies or whatever I really don't need to pump at all.

Thatās good to know in regard to pumping brenna, thanks for sharing. I feel like I am a fish out of water with this whole breastfeeding thing... itās hard to know what is ānormalā.

What did they do before pumps were invented? Haha. It really annoys me how much pumping is pushed these days. I had one lactation consultant with dd1 tell me I needed to be pumping like 6+ times a day in addition to feeding DD. I was like are you kidding me?! I did not continue with that lactation consultant...

I thought it wasn't even really recommended to pump extra until baby was a few weeks old and supply has had time to regulate. I wouldn't stress about fitting in pumping sessions this early unless it's necessary.

I wouldn't worry about pumping this early on. 6x/day sounds like pure madness. Goodness.

mirabelle If youāre engorged I wouldnāt pump at all right now. Except maybe to relieve a little pressure before a feed or manage an overactive letdown...

OMG no to pumping immediately unless there is a real reason to be. I would be ignoring that nurse's advice and finding an IBCLC if you want a legit lactation person to talk to mirabelle.

So another question (I feel like a newbie with this but everything that has to do with feeding dd2 is much different than dd1) dd2 feeds much faster than dd1 ever did which is great and I think my milk supply is way better this time around, but it seems like dd2 is almost choking when I feed her sometimes and she spits up a lot I think because maybe my letdown is fast? Anybody have any tips on how I can help dd2 so she doesn't choke and spit up so much? I try to feed her kind of sitting more upright, but she still has issues with choking.

I've never had this issue myself, but the frequent suggestions I hear to help are laid back nursing positions, and if the letdown is super strong you can unlatch baby when the letdown comes and let some of the powerful flow spray into a towel (or a bottle of some sort if you want to try to collect the milk!). Then relatch baby when the strong force lets up. Hopefully getting the gulping on the fast letdown under control will help the spitting up too š

brenna - A recommendation I hear often is to unlatch and let the milk spray into a burp cloth or something during letdown then relatch baby. If I tried that I'd probably try to catch it in a bottle or something because I wouldn't want to waste breastmilk, but it would then let her nurse at her own pace instead of trying to keep up with your let down. Eventually she may also learn how to handle it so you may not always have to worry about it.
