Did you see that the caller called again after the cops left? Police did not press charges, but that wasn't enough to satisfy the anonymous caller, who decided to call DCFS after the officers left, Widen told CBS Chicago affiliate WBBM.People are such assholes. Seriously! WTF. I see kids who are around that age walking dogs near my house and I never thought twice about it.

Absolute assholes. Like, have you not watched the news lady? Have you not heard about terrible cases of abuse? DCFS doesn't need to waste their time on your BS when there are legitimate concerns.

Morning! Ouch! vino Poor kid. Hope J is feeling better and not worse as the day progresses. mskatiep Exciting! Hope all is good! Busy morning. Dropped M off at school then back home to finish getting ready to head to work. MH had an early morning group, so he met me at work to get M2 and head home. I get off at 1, so I'll then head home and tag him out so he can go to work this afternoon. I hope he naps at some point this afternoon so I can do a few things that I need to.

M2 is fine this morning. No new bumps on his hands or feet this morning. Still pretty much contained to his diaper area. I'm bringing gloves home from work today so we can be extra careful when changing him this weekend. Do not want this spreading in my household.

Anyone else see this? Mom shamed for daughter's dog-walking What do y'all think? I guess it depends on the neighborhood and kid, but darn, if the police and CPS show up b/c I let my 8 y.o. walk the dog on our street, I'm going to have a few choice words. There is a coworker here that went to Vancouver for vacation with his family, and allowed his 10yo and 13yo to have a day of adventure on their own. They were in the same, say portion of the city, but allowed them the freedom to do what they wanted. At first I was judgey and then thought, clearly he knows his kids would handle it as he is a responsible adult so I now think it's neat and what a great sense of freedom and trust for the kids. Such a good point. Military families who are stationed in Japan always say how much they love it b/c it's very safe and they can let their kids explore, take public transportation, etc. without fear. Along those lines (kind of), on a family vacation to Paris, both my parents came down with food poisoning; they let my sister and I leave the hotel and do a little shopping, have a meal, etc. in the area nearby (no metro or anything). We were 14 and 10, I spoke enough French to get by, and we felt so grown-up. It was a great experience. I think this speaks to the larger point of letting our kids taking some (calculated, age-appropriate) risks, and having enough faith in our parenting, and in our kids. I do believe--assuming the child has proven s/he can be trusted to follow the rules, etc--that it's good to allow our children to step outside their (and our) comfort zone and have new experiences, to build their confidence and skills.

Oh and I forgot 1) cagoldi , do you see that X has other sensory type issues besides the lack of eating? I saw you said the other day he ate a popsicle, has he started eating anything else since you started therapy? 2) lahdeedah , tgrimes , nam2013 how are your little sick ones? He's still a coughing snotty mess. He was holding onto me for dear life when I dropped him off in his room this morning. I could still hear him crying down the hallway after I dropped M off at her class. I'll just be over here waiting for that call from daycare again... Ugh that's miserable, sorry. I pray that don't call you, that's the worst.

I agree with all of this. We went on a family vacation to San Francisco when I was around 12 and my brother was 16. It was actually a work convention for my dad (all our family vacations were), and one night they must have had a dinner, but they let us go out to dinner alone. I still remember it, and thinking how cool it was. Although I'm laughing at how much I think this is ok, but I'm still blown away that vino's friends are having drop off parties and I can't imagine sending S to a party on his own. I hope I am able to let go a bit more as he grows!!

COngrats mskatiepSo Landon is 8, turns 9 in September. We just recently let him start walking alone to his fri new houses that are in the neighborhood, or to the neighborhood park. We’ve also started him letting him stay home alone and start his homework after school while I run and get Ryland, which is like a 10 minute trip round trip. He’s super responsible, a rule follower and I have zero worries. He knows not to answer the door, to run and yell if a stranger or strange car approached him. He’s in third grade and I trust him, I mean I was babysitting by the time I was in fourth grade.

But B already has that devilish look in his eyes and I can tell will be pushing all the boundries. I let S play on the front porch by himself and we live on a very busy street. He literally will not take one step off the porch and will run inside to ask me before even picking something up on the step. We had friends over that couldn't believe I let him do that, but I know my kid. Now B on the other hand... he won't be allowed out there on his own till he's 12!!!

I think I was 9 or 10 when my mom would let us stay home if she was somewhere in the neighborhood or very close by. I was babysitting at 11...I can't imagine leaving my kids with an 11 year old now, lol, but I have definitely relaxed my standards on our baby-sitter's ages as they've gotten older and more self-sufficient.

It's definitely important to foster independence in kids. They need to learn to handle doing things on their own at a gradual pace because those skills don't magically appear overnight when you're 18. My mom was very overprotective but my older sister and I pushed back. My younger brother didn't and was perfectly fine with being coddled. It showed as it got to older teen years and adulthood. He's doing great now in his mid-20s but it took him a while to get there. His early adult life was pretty pathetic.

We went to Vegas when I was 13 and my sister was 15. My parents let us walk a few blocks from the hotel down to a water park and spend the day there by ourselves, then walk back....so they could go gamble! Lol. We were responsible and the ages weren’t bad for that....BUT...it was Vegas! I don’t know that was the best place to give us that freedom. Of course we were fine and nothing happened. But I give my mom a hard time about it. Lol.

I grew up in Reno and whenever my aunts and uncles would come to visit they would want to gamble, so they would load all the kids up and drop us at the casino arcade while they gambled! We couldn’t have been older then 9. I also give my mom shit about this.

So! There is a silhouette artist who travels around the southeast cutting children's silhouettes in toy shops, baby boutiques, etc. I have wanted to have this done as long as I've had children, so I stalk this guy on FB. I just saw his post that he's coming here an hour after he posted it; I logged on and got the last 2 spots !!!!! Then I realized that is the weekend DH is supposed to take C to his parents'...:sad trombone: So I am going to need him to get up at the a$$-crack of dawn to get back in time so we can do this. I'm sure MIL will be delighted with me. (Of course if he is not back from the boat by then this is all a moot point and I can have silhouettes cut to my heart's content) I'm excited! eta: I realize this is the kind of obscure, old-fashioned thing that 80 y.o.'s get excited about, buuuut consider the source
