I have a stupid city slicker question: what is a duck boat? Is this a certain type of water vessel or does that just mean a boat that was taking people for a duck hunt?

You drive it on land, into the water, for a tour or whatever. So it's a boat, but you can drive it on land, it has wheels and such.

Re wiping up until 4 weeks ago ds would call us (or his teacher...) I promised him a kinder egg if he would at least try to do it five days in a row. We check him occasionally, he’s usually okay.

C does not wipe himself. He can but he doesn't want to because he's afraid to get poop on his hands. He apparently gives no shits about my hands.

Pulling from the confessions thread (I'm too scared to ask over there) are your kids wiping themselves? Cadence still calls one of us to do it and I don't know who is doing it for her at school, although most of the time she doens't poop at school. At home S asks us to wipe him. At school he wipes himself. Not well. Last night he had a big stain in his underwear. At least he's trying? Honestly, I don't mind wiping him at home b/c I know it gets him clean.

flamingo after the threads over there I'm assuming I need to start on washing herself, wiping herself, tying her shoes, balancing a budget, setting up a 401k, driving a car.... Mh tends to do everything for her. I'm like no, she can dress herself, I've tried getting her to brush her own hair and teeth, I gave her a knife the other night to get her started working in the kitchen. We're on 2 ends of the spectrum.

klong11 S just started bathing himself in the last 2 weeks. I do his face and his hair, he does everything else. We use that knife you posted about too. He loves to help. He sucks at balancing his checkbook though

He sucks at balancing his checkbook though I gave her that knife and she started singing, "oh yeah, I've got a knife, oh yeah" and dancing and waving it around. I had to explain we don't wave knives around.

We're on 2 ends of the spectrum. Yeah. I think there's a wider range of 'appropriate' at our kids' current age but I am all about encouraging independence within reason. I think B is doing age-appropriate things, he has chores around the house, we let him help in the kitchen. He's also tall, which enables him to do a bit more in certain respects. But is he scrambling eggs and mixing cocktails? Sadly, no The ones that raised my eyebrows a bit were kids in elementary school not being able to tie shoes, or ride a bike...stuff that I think that the average 2nd or 3rd grader needs to know how to do by that age, assuming no developmental issues, etc.

Why do they keep saying "duck" boat?! It was driving me crazy. Doesn't look like something I'd want to take in rough waters, that's for sure.

B wipes herself. She very rarely asks for help. It’s also rare that I find skid marks in her undies so she must be doing ok! tgrimes - Even after 30+ years, I still don’t know what I’m doing w curly hair! 😑

Josie wipes herself, but (TMI!!), she typically poops clean. On the rare occasion, it's softer than usual, she will call me in to check.

So does M. I wonder if I need to try a leave in conditioner. Why did I have to have a curly haired child. I have no idea what to do with curly hair. Send her my way. The struggle is real. Especially finding a stylist who can cut curly hair. I would say 1/3 of the time I am happy with my haircut. I am also super protective of Theo's curls. The last cut he got was terrible and I am convinced it is because I did not hover and micromanage that time 😉

I'm glad to hear you all have wiping issues too. I swear it was not this tough with my 6y/o, but maybe I just blocked it out. Evie will straight up not do it at all or call for us on a good day. We make her try herself and then do a follow up wipe like PPs have said.
I wipe so many butts, you guise.

My mom told her we wanted it shoulder length. Well, she cut it to my shoulders, but it was wet. So I don't have to tell you what happened when it dried. I was so embarrassed I refused to leave the house without wearing my brownie sweater over my head for months afterward. As if that is any less ridiculous, but in my mind the sweater may as well have been a wig because it was about the same color of my hair and the length it had been before she butchered me.

He will be 13 in December. He has some condition that makes it hard for him to learn certain type of things and has emotional issues so it's hard to correct according to my mom. He's been here for a week. I sometimes think he does things or doesn't because he can get away with it. I know he's been instigating LO because my mom lets him get away with it.

I have wavy frizzy hair. My mom can't cut straight, lots of traumatic childhood memories of my mom butchering my hair. My sisters and I have taught all our kids to tell my mom no to cutting hair. I hope E has straight hair or I'll be spending a lot of money taking her to a professional to get it cut.

Obviously sometimes there are extenuating circumstances, and I can't speak specifically to your nephew, but I do think there is something to be said for kids living up to expectations, or lack thereof. My aunt definitely babied her boys somewhat and one in particular...like, she was still fixing his plates and cutting up meat/cutting corn off the cob, etc. into high school. He was just not expected to do much, either for himself or helping out around the house/yard, etc....and as a result, I think he is somewhat stunted as a now 19 y.o. I'd be shocked if he can do laundry or fix a meal for himself beyond a frozen pizza or sandwich. He does have some things he deals with and has been treated for (anxiety, ADHD), but I think my aunt gave him passes on A LOT beyond that, and it definitely shows. :/

Also Colin's teachers this past year got them into the habit of wiping themselves. It was... messy to begin with but it's fine now. He'll still ask me to wipe if I'm there and his stomach has been a bit off, but he generally handles it himself behind closed doors.

I've seen him do certain things on Monday when it was just me around and then say he can't do it on Tuesday when my mom is around. It makes me nervous for LO because he picks up on things like that.

Kids are great at knowing who will and won't let them get away with things. Cadence asks for a snack, I tell her to get it herself. If she asks mh, he will get up and give her whatever she wants. The same goes for at school or swim lessons. At her old swim school I had to tell them, don't let her get away with goofing around. She had one coach that would just let her play the whole time. No. She can do these skills and you need to stay on her to keep her focused. But you know, what do I know, I'm just a mean mom always in her bizness!
