I called Tim Scott's office today. He is an oddity in that he's a black Republican senator from the lower part of SC, which is our more liberal area. The guy I spoke to was very nice and said they have been getting tons of calls. He said Tim Scott supports keeping families together. Hopefully he will step up and act. I'm going to keep calling and writing.

My MP still has not responded. She posted something on her personal Facebook page (its open to the public) about it on Sunday but nothing since then.

@heartbot maybe you should get in touch and offer your professional services. The problem with grassroots organizing is that rookies need help! I have! The organizer(s) have not responded! I hope they come around! If they did respond and also need local help, send a flare.

For those of you looking for rally events near you on the 30th, the complete list is here. I'm irritated because very few of the events are being advertised on facebook. I have no idea who is running them, but this feels very sloppy. You should post this in the thread on GD! Thanks for the link. I don't FB and was looking for something like this. Thanks lady!

Watching Maddow break down trying to report about it made me cry again.
Fuck them all for being this inhumane.
Thank you all for the links and ideas for places to donate.

Canadians who may be reading this: you can help too. Write to your MP and the PM and ask them to ditch the Canada-US Safe Third Country Agreement. It's the treaty we signed which makes it almost impossible for asylum seekers to be approved to stay in Canada if they came through the US first. I wrote a letter to JT that I'll share here if anyone wants it. Letter behind the spoiler tags. Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
I am writing to you today to express my shock, alarm, and concern over the forced separation of children from their parents in the United States of America. It is not (and should not be) illegal to seek asylum, yet that is the impression the American government is sending to the world. Canada must take a strong, principled stance against these actions - just as we have in the face of the tariffs, which you and your administration have handled with such grace and fortitude.
The United Nations has cautioned the United States of America that it is illegal to separate children from their families. This flagrant violation of children's rights puts the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement in an uncomfortable position: will we, a country with a tragic history of separating children from their family through the residential school system, which we as a country have openly acknowledged was a mistake, truly disallow asylum seekers who now enter from the United States out of fear that they too will lose their children?
I am proud to be Canadian. I am proud to live in a country where life is valued, respected, and celebrated. I am proud to live side by side with Canadians who have come to this country from all over the world - some by choice, some for asylum. I am proud to live in a country where human rights are paramount.
Please make me proud, again, to have a leader who will speak up about human rights violations happening, no matter who the perpetrator is, no matter how closely tied our countries are. It is because our countries are such close allies that we must take a stand and tell our American neighbours that this is not acceptable to Canada. We must not allow this travesty to continue without so much as a whisper of disagreement. This is an excellent letter. If I may, I’d like to use the basis of it to send to my MP? I donated tonight too. I can’t actually believe this is happening. Well that’s not entirely true. I can. I can’t believe it hasn’t been stopped.

I sent it to both the PM and my MP yesterday... Crickets so far... Trudeau seems confused about what Canadians expect of him: m.huffingtonpost.ca/2018/06/18/trudeau-trump-child-migrant_a_23462117/"NDP immigration critic Jenny Kwan charged that U.S. President Donald Trump is using the "cruel and unusual practice" to stop migrants from crossing the border, noting how his administration has scrapped domestic violence and gang violence as grounds for asylum. Again, she asked Trudeau if he still believes the U.S. qualifies as a safe country. The prime minister did not mention Trump in his response and suggested Canadians do not expect him to weigh in on the matter. "From the very beginning I have been very clear on the role that Canadians expect of me — to stand up firmly and unequivocally for our values, for our interests, to protect Canadians and to make sure that we're doing well, as well as having a constructive relationship with the United States," Trudeau said. "That's what we're going to remain focused on."

Melania and Queen Letizia of Spain had tea to "[focus] on the ways [they] can positively affect children"

I was reading about the Arizona Catholic bishop who suggested implementing canonical penalty for those playing a role in the border separation mess, which seems like a really interesting idea.

Hi. I've been absent but lurking. This hurts my heart so much.
I want to throw this out to my Facebook universe:
If a white Canadian woman fleeing an abusive husband crossed our border illegally with her young children, would people want those babies, who have already been through so much, to be taken away from her and detained in CAGES? And the mother thrown in a detention center with no idea when she would see them again? This would not likely happen, yes?
Then why are some people (not on this thread) ok with it happening from our other border? If good-meaning people really feel this is ok, I challenge them to examine where these feelings are coming from. It's simply racist and despicable to treat someone differently (and cruelly) because of their skin color or country of origin.
And that is what is happening. People justify it because they "broke the law." (Claiming asylum is not actuallly breaking the law. Crossing the border is a misdemeanor. We don't take away children for these things.)
In Nazi Germany, they led people to believe that Jews had broken laws, stolen, lied. People turned against an entire race, and we know what happened there.
We simply cannot start to dehumanize other groups of people or say that they "deserve" inhumane treatment. It's horrific.
