Fucking Freedom Caucus. They are the real obstructionists. Both of those GOP immigration bills massively suck, but neither one is going to pass the Senate. Right?!? God at this point I don't even know if any of them will pass the House. I just read an article about the "state of chaos" there right now and that Republicans are planning for both to fail.

Can I get some rebuttal help from you wonderfully smart and informed people? I got into a debate last night about the child separation policy with a right leaning friend. He says that although he believes the families should not be separated, some of the messaging from the right gave him pause because they are reporting that children are being used as pawns in border crossings by presenting them as family when they are actually being trafficked. So by that logic, a temporary separation allows for confirmation that the children are not trafficking victims. FTR, I believe this is complete fear mongering bullshit, but I struggled with a comeback last night. Is it possible? Quite likely. But I think there are better ways to ascertain the relationship then separating for days or weeks. Also I think that percentage is probably low. And that I would assume they know who the majority of traffickers are. Just like they know who has previously crossed the border and been deported |

I love being an American. I am proud of many parts of America. There is a lot to be disgusted by right now, but I’m here trying to fix it. So I will wave the flag and be patriotic, but for the America I love and want to be, not for the current shit hole it is trying to be/is. I want to show my son that we care about this country enough to fix it and we are proud of what some people are doing to resist and fix. I know that doesn’t work for everyone but that’s how I approach it. That being said, I completely understand and respect people who do not want any part of the flag or being patriotic at this time. |

I can't stand the sight of the flag right now. I hate that the right has somewhat co-opted the flag and the word "patriot" to symbolize their fever-dream land of conservative xenophobia.
I respect what you are saying, @juliagulia. I had a colleague a few years ago with two boys in the Boy Scouts, and he felt the same way about that organization. He was working to change it from the inside, and we *need* people like that.
And obviously I am here, working to change things, but in the meantime I'm not feeling great about my association with the state of things here.

We already had a process in place to address cases where children were being brought across by people who were not actually their families. And what we were doing up until yesterday afternoon was not a temporary separation. It was a complete separation and relabeling the children as unaccompanied minors, completely decoupling their immigration cases from the family members who brought them here so that their families could not find them. My cousin worked on trafficking issues and I've heard her stories, so i know gangs do often use mules, etc. But that's not what is happening here. I have read dozens of stories about actual parents separated from actual children and heard interviews with attorneys and reporters who account for hundreds more. I have yet to hear anyone other than the white house talk about this smokescreen trafficking business. A fave of Neilson... who has proven herself to be a real truth teller, huh? |
