Can we all please remember he's not even 3 yet? My gosh. Also when we arrived at daycare, the kids, including the older ones, swarmed him per usual and the older ones said "awe Nick has cat food that's so cute!!" These are kids that know him and have been with him since he started going there when he was 3 months old. If I thought for one second he'd be made fun of, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Not all kids are dicks. I realize we are very lucky with the kids he is with every day, and it will not always be that way. I am just trying to put this situation into better context. No. it’s not possible that this is ok for your kid right now. You are setting him up to be the smelly cat food kid forever and ever amen. Better call CPS. My 7 year old still takes his blankie to daycare some days. Call about that too. Thanks.

I disagree with the stifling creativity part. Im a very creative person. I don't need to be walking around life with cat food in order to feed into that. Maybe a joint. But if you have that joint you might want to walk around with a bag of cat food. I'm going to be walking around with all the food I bought at 711.

The cat food in the crib thing is very very odd. The other posts of mine about mitigating strangeness hold true for neurotypical children as well as those on spectrum. Helping your kid navigate the world and "fit in" reasonably well is important life skill. I disagree. I think confidence and self-esteem are important life skills. These do not cancel each other out. Fitting in reasonably well in the world adds to your self confidence and self esteem. Knowing what to do when you aren't fitting in, can help you to understand, decide what you can change or find new people to be around.

Ahhhh string cheese, chili cheese Fritos and a big gulp brings back so many memories. I was fortunate enough that my first place had a 7-11 on the corner.

Helping your kid navigate the world and "fit in" reasonably well is important life skill. So there is only one way everyone should be and we should listen to you and only you because you figured it out and are the epitome of what everyone should be. You don't read well do you? I never said you have to do this to be just like me If you heard that in my words, you are projecting.

I don't know how it went from redirecting a behavior one may consider odd to stifflig creativity and not being kind. Like I said, different styles and all. My kid is plenty creative and happy. I don't think how we encourage or not encourage weirdness takes any of those things away. But that's me. I'm not getting the connections being made.

My confession is that I got my family all Incredibles shirts to wear to the new movie tomorrow. It started with getting MH an "Incredible Dad" shirt for Father's Day. Then I saw they had shirts for the kids too. So I figured I might as well get myself one. I bought myself an "Incredible Mom" shirt. DD1 has already decided we will be the Incredibles for Halloween. She can't decide if she wants to be Violet or Dash. Spoiler alert: they wear the same outfit.

I'm not sure how the idea that a child wearing a costume to a store means they are going to wear it on a job interview in 20 years was made either, but that leap was certainly made.

Fitting in with others only helps your self-esteem if you place value on fitting in with others. Everyone in human society puts some value on fitting in with others, making friends, surrounded by family, getting married, holding a job are all part of "fitting in" to society around you. I don't want my kid to be made fun of, and I don't want my kid to be all alone in his world. There is a happy medium here, ya know?
