My 3 year old is the size of a 5 year old. We have a trip to Columbia in August and I don't particularly want to lug his normal travel seat around. We won't be doing much driving.
I know it's labeled for 4 and up, but would you use it with a large 3 year old?

I personally would not, but, if your child is the right size, I would think it's likely ok.
When we travel, we use an IMMI Go.
It's expensive, but the five-point harness gives me peace of mind.

Mine will be 3 in August and no way would I trust him in a booster at this point. Could you use the safe rider travel vest?

Does it have a weight/height guide? CSFTL says minimum 40 inches / 40 pounds. Does he meet those bottom limits, seamonster ? I'm planning to keep my two-year-old in a five-point harness as long as possible. |

My responsible 7yo doesn't sit in a backless booster for anything more than quick local trips because he Wiggles around too much.
Age guidelines are based on bone strength, not size. A large 3yo and a small 3yo have the same bone structure.
If you want a light seat I recommend the Harmony Defender 360.

I’ve used a bubble bum and I don’t even really like it for my 6 year old. She’s so used to the structure of her car seat that she was just all over the place with a backless booster and this one doesn’t even have containment at the sides. I would think an three year old would be near impossible to keep in the seat. At least based on my kids’ maturities.

If he meets the height/weight limits AND you're not going to be in the car for long distances with him AND an adult can sit next to him to help model good car posture and no wiggling around I would.
Though you do need a shoulder belt to use the Bubblebum. You're not allowed to use it with a lap belt only. I brought ours to the DR this past winter but couldn't use it because of the seat belts in the shuttle van we used.

We have one for our 7 year old. We have used it for short distances via uber. (We are a one car family)-so yeah, no problem with her in it to Target or something. However, I am in the back with her and still remind her how to sit correctly. (She is fine in a backless booster-bumble bum just makes her wiggle more) I definitely wouldn't use it for a 3 year old.

If you're not going to be in the car a ton and he's around the bottom weight limit size I would do it. I would also be sure to sit next to him as well to keep an eye out and help him sit straight and not wiggle. I used it with my DD who was newly 4 because we were just going to be in the car twice on the trip (and not far distances) and I was already dragging a full seat for her baby sister. I thought it was fine and felt she was safe. I used the belt positioner that it came with and that really helped keep the seat belt in the right spot.

We tried DS (almost 5 yo at the time) on a Bubblebum last winter when we traveled to Florida. It was a fiasco. It was quickly clear that he is not yet mature enough to keep his bum planted on the booster and the seat belt strap in place on his shoulder.

He's currently 43lbs and 43 inches tall. It's to and from the airport in a taxi, and a short ride to and from a second town and one of us would ride in the back with him.

I'm going to be getting a bubble bum for next month, only for the trip to the airport and back since she has car seats on the other side. Mine is 4, but I would have been fine using it in that capacity when she was 3 (she has always been really big for her age). We won't be using it long enough that I'm worried about her not sitting properly.

I wouldnt. My 5.5 year old used it on a trip recently and he did ok, but I wouldn’t have trusted my 3 year old to sit in it right. It took a lot of reminding to get DS to use it properly.
ETA. I just read your last post, I might be ok with it if someone was back there and it’s just very short trips.

I think the biggest fear of misuse is a wiggly kid. I just sat next to my kid and talked to him a lot "sit up straight, but all the way back, no wiggling." He did fine. |

No. It’s not a size thing so much as a maturity thing. And in Ohio it’s illegal. I think most places are 4 and 40lbs as an absolute minimum.

I would use it in a taxi situation or a to and from air port situation. I've only used them with older kids, but since he meets the minimum I would be ok if an adult is sitting next to him or checking often that he is sitting right.

We have a bubble bum too and it just works well for my tall 7 year old. I don’t think the belt fit would be that good. I tried my 5 year old in it and he didn’t do well but does fine in a regular booster. It’s kind of hard to sit on... |

I loved ours, but the last trip we took with it, DS was too heavy and we had a couple to tip over incidents. He would have been in the 40 lb range at the time. So, I would recommend trying it out at home if you go that route. |
