I threatened my high school calculus teacher and my high school principal with a call to the ACLU when they refused to let me drop out of calculus. #entitled My calc teacher was PISSED when I dropped it, but thankfully did not have to consult laywer (who would have been law school student sister). I was doing ok grade wise but always felt behind and lost (she was teaching it fast so people could take the AP test). It was the last quarter of senior year and I figured I didn't need the stress anymore. I pointed out that I wouldn't need calc for my Political Science major and she said "good luck with that". Oh... this sounds a lot like my experience. lolllll.

I used to be good at math until I went to a math and science high school with overachieving geniuses. My academic career went downhill fast because I didn't know how to deal with no longer being "smart".
First grade was the highlight of my academic career, really.

My least favorite was fucking international finance. My mind could not grasp that one.
Fav was ecocmetrics, by far.
ETA I can’t spell today... econometrics

I am so grateful that my State School accepted transfer of the Algebra course I took at my private University as my culminating math. I only got a C because I basically cheated off my roommate. <----- has some sort of number dyslexia and sucks at math.I transpose numbers like whoa but I can math well out loud. I was lucky to have an amazing teacher who would help me. I even got to take some classes with him independently, and he would read the tests to me in his office. He also told me if I couldn't see the difference between an 89% and a 98%, then neither could he, and gave me an A in Diff EQ so I could keep my 4.0 through nursing school.

Or maybe it was Microeconomics. Both of them sucked for me. The math in micro didn't make any sense.

Nowhere that results in an income stream or anything. I loved me some algebra though. Even thought about being a math teacher, my love was that strong. Calculus really wrecked my life.

Algebra and Algrebra II were fun. I actually enjoyed doing matrices. My husband still laughs at me about it.

My major was Spanish so I took so many insane Spanish classes and they were entirely in Spanish. Like full on English major classes in Spanish. So many fucking books I had to read in old old spanish. Like Dickens but the Spanish equivalent. And first hand accounts of conquistadors and whatnot. It's not been overly useful in my adult life, except now I can help my kid with all his Spanish work. I crushed kindergarten Spanish in case any of you were wondering. I minored in Spanish. When we meet to smoke out, I'll make sure to speak only but Spanish with you. It will be fun.

I did really well in Calculus in high school, and tested into Calc for my first semester at college. But, I didn't go the first time, because 8am, and then the second time it was like 200 people in the class, which I don't really find helpful in math class. So I failed it at least twice, and then took fucking college algebra to just get the damn math credit over with.

Frankly the majority of my education has been used in answering the 48 billion questions asked by my kid daily. This has been so true for me too. I'll go back to work someday soon, but in the meantime, I mostly use my education for navigating all of DS1's health stuff. It comes in handy for shutting down conversations occasionally too. Like if he's playing the 48 billion question game and I launch into the Kreb's cycle, there's a good chance his eyes will glaze over because NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE KREB'S CYCLE DAMMIT.

I remember like 25% of college life, including which classes I took and even less of what I actually learned. And then reduce that to 10% for high school.

I think a big benefit to college education is learning to think critically. BUT, I see a lot of that falling by the wayside these days, and professors just doing a lot of hand holding.

My spoken Spanish has fallen off but I'll just go with it. It's okay. Just say "¡órale" every few sentences. And "¡ay guey!" if i say something animated. Trust, it will work out.

I have a lot of opinions about higher education, but I realize a lot of them come from a place of privilege-- much of my college was paid for and my parents mostly supported me. I changed my major about fifty times and spent almost 5 years of college getting an associate's as a result. BUT there was no way I was mature enough to go to nursing school at 18, and I would've struggled even more with a career (because of H's) had I stuck with my original degree.

I wish I'd had teachers that understood. I told a high school Algebra teacher to "fuck off" one day, because he was such an ass (and a horrible teacher). The principal didn't even punish me, because it was so widely known. Thankfully I did fine in Geometry, but abstract math was too much.

Worst class I ever took was Macroeconomics. Mostly because it was in the business college with all of the business students and no matter how hard I tried I literally could not understand any of the concepts. It was...embarrassing. I swear I am not dumb, but macroecon kicked my ass. I was in differential equations at the same time and understood the diff eq better. Apparently my brain just does not grasp econ. My friend and I would swap books for like 5 minutes and attempt to understand. Mine was micro (so close) and his was diff eq. Fuck diff eq. The pictures were interesting though.

Surprisingly though i was really good at calc but terrible at stats

My first semester there was someone in my ag econ class that was on their 4th or 5th time taking an intro to econ class so they could graduate. I have no idea if that worked out or not. I didn't go to class much.

I took honors macroeconomics my first semester.
I sat outside my professor’s office twice a week to do the weekly problem sets and went in to have him check after each one. It took hours, but I learned it in and out. He exempted me from the exams and told me I should major in Econ. Lolno. That was all hard work and no talent, sir.
