I got an invitation yesterday for the bridal shower for my niece. It's about 30 min from my house because her fiance's family lives here. Do I go? Keep in mind I've only met my niece once back in 2001. She told me on the phone about it and said she'd love to meet me, but I will not know anyone there. Y'all know me and it will be awkward. Like, hi, I'm Madisson's aunt....which one is she...

Would y'all go? Do I make an excuse that the time doesn't work and try to meet her for coffee or a drink of something so she can meet M too? I'm torn.

I think she invited me because I'm family, M is in the wedding and she said she'd love to meet me.  It was probably just a courtesy thing.

tgrimes, I think it's nice she invited you, but I would not feel pressure to go. Like others said, I would decline saying you have a prior engagement, but maybe see if there is a date while she is in town that you could meet up (and M could meet her, etc.)
