Not surprising, but they are going to ram through the nomination and vote before midterms:

I'm sorry but I kind of agree with that decision. Unless someone can prove me wrong. I don't think non-members of a union should pay contributions to a union they choose not to be apart of. Then we need a separate salary scale so those not joining do not benefit from my bargaining.

He couldn't have fucking waited until after the midterms? I actually used to have a lot of respect for Kennedy, despite not agreeing with him all the time. Fuck this. I’m wondering if it’s a health issue? Haven’t there been rumors of this for quite a while? I think we had a poster who had some knowledge and was expecting him to step down due to his health like last year.

But they reap the benefits of collective bargaining whether they want to be in or not. Why should they get everything the union covers, including negotiated salary and health benefits, without having to pay in. If they don’t want to pay, they should be at will employees who now have to negotiate their health care and other benefits for themselves. They also should not get union protection when lay offs or discipline proceedings happen. This is what I think. I think its in or out. You get the benefits of the union if you pay in but if not you get what the company gives you. If you don't like what the company gives you then you don't work there. Companies can hire people who don't want to be in the union but without attractive benefits then people won't work there very long.

All I can think is “at least it’s not a liberal justice stepping down?” 😪 RBG better take care of herself until a Democrat is back in the White House.

So I have a stupid question. What is the process to over turn a supreme court ruling? Like would the new justice be able to show up on his first day and just overturn whatever he wants or does a case have to make it's way up through the system first?
I don't know if that makes any sense.

Companies can hire people who don't want to be in the union but without attractive benefits then people won't work there very long. Do you want to see what happens when that is allowed? Take a look at Idaho. Low wages, fairly nonexistent employee protection, unskilled labor. I'll use plumbers as an example A union plumber has to complete 5 years of apprenticeship supervised by a journeyman, they take classes at night at the hall. A non union plumber doesnt*, they are out there on a job, sometimes supervised sometimes not, they can take classes at the college. *per the law an an apprentice should always be supervised but that doesnt always happen on a jobsite. If its a union job its a BIG deal, not so much non. which one do you want installing your bathtub, fixing your shower or fixing the sewer line from your house. And before you answer that, the union plumber is going to charge you 130/hour, the non 45. so now the cycle continues because most people are going to choose the 45/hr one. Not the most qualified. Again this is pretty simplistic I wont get into the last time the Teachers Union was trying to negotiate their contract after years of cuts and they were called all sorts of names including thugs.

If you don't like what the company gives you then you don't work there. Companies can hire people who don't want to be in the union but without attractive benefits then people won't work there very long. But guys. Here is the thing. If not everyone has Union protection OR has to follow Union rules, this means that if the Union strikes to contest low pay and low wages, then the company can just hire more non-Union people to replace them, and it's a win for the companies, because they get an entire workforce of people without the Union-protected wages & benefits. It effectively ENDS the Union. And in the meantime, the people who walked away from the Union in order to save a few bucks every month will now end up with an entire workforce with significantly lower pay, fewer benefits, and fewer protections. It's short-sighted on the workers' part to walk out, but is a massive boon to companies. This is Union-busting, y'all. Come on. Oh, I’m well aware of the snowballing that will occur, but figured the two posters before me got that portion covered. I’m kind of in a blind rage at the moment and want to kick all my trump loving coworkers in the dicks (who, by the way, are all union workers. Fucker)

A case would have to make it's way through the courts first. Thanks. Figured that was the case but wanted to make sure. That doesn't mean that some states won't immediately rewrite their laws restricting abortion, they absolutely will. What a depressing week. And we're only halfway done.

And we're only halfway done. And then the ACLU will sue, it will make its way through the lower courts that 45 has been packing with judges, and eventually land in front of SCOTUS with the Kennedy replacement picked by Pence and McConnell. And women become second class citizens in many, many states.

(Because you can't go harvest organs from a dead person without their permission. I mean, yet. God knows what else will change with this administration.)

I’ve heard rumors of this for a while. However I was hoping he would hold out for better timing. Well, he’s a conservative nominated by Reagan, so I’m sure this timing suits him just fine.
