Loving the closing from Sotomayor and Ginsburg's dissent: Our Constitution demands, and our country deserves, a Judiciary willing to hold the coordinate branches to account when they defy our most sacred legal commitments. Because the Court’s decision today has failed in that respect, with profound regret, I dissent.

And if nothing else, this will be the ladting legacy of the Trump presidency. We will lose so much ground because of this one supreme court seat.

In stunning act of unprecedented partisanship, Mitch McConnell has altered the course of our nation with one single political choice. Unbelievable.

I'm sorry but I kind of agree with that decision. Unless someone can prove me wrong. I don't think non-members of a union should pay contributions to a union they choose not to be apart of.

So should non-members benefit from a collective bargaining agreement? Right to work state here plus daughter and granddaughter of union workers. So I'm pretty pro union. the union has a set pay scale for members, they also have other benefits such as their health benefits and pension funds, and a bunch of other stuff like rights to a rep, contract negotiation thats voted on by all members, etc. A non union shop does not have a set pay scale and can pay person A $5/hour and person B $15/hour even though they have the same experience. Thats a pretty simplistic view but union dues are not typically astronomical and the benefits are typically greater than if you negotiated yourself.

But they reap the benefits of collective bargaining whether they want to be in or not. Why should they get everything the union covers, including negotiated salary and health benefits, without having to pay in. If they don’t want to pay, they should be at will employees who now have to negotiate their health care and other benefits for themselves. They also should not get union protection when lay offs or discipline proceedings happen.

Our dues are a salary percentage (it’s less than 1%). Our newest contract included no increase in the percentage of the health premiums we pay while insuring our coverage didn’t change at all, a 2% salary increase each year, and our dues cover our dental and vision insurance premiums for our whole family among other things. Really, the amount I pay per month is nothing compared to what we get back

Here's an article about the effects of gutting unions on Wisconsin teachers: www.chalkbeat.org/posts/us/2017/11/16/gutting-wisconsin-teachers-unions-hurt-students-study-finds/It's worth a read just to see a little bit of the longer term impacts on a state's education system. I know someone who worked in a lower performing school for 10 years. When they took away their pension and health benefits were not as good, the incentive wasn't as great to deal with the day-to-day challenges and frustrations and so they left the school to persue another job in another field (I'm oversimplifying here, but you hopefully get the idea). The kids at the school lost a positive role model who was a fantastic teacher.

He couldn't have fucking waited until after the midterms? I actually used to have a lot of respect for Kennedy, despite not agreeing with him all the time. Fuck this. I’m wondering if it’s a health issue?

July 31st and with Mitch in charge, there is no way the Democrats are going to be able to hold this up until the new Senate is seated in January.
