Hey guys!
Tomorrow morning I’m doing my glucose tolerance test. I had GD with my pregnancy with DD so I have to go straight to the 3 hour fasting version. I’m not looking forward to the actual test, but I’m way breezier about he outcome than I was last time. It’s out of my control, and if I do have it I’d rather know about it so I can control it. That said, I totally had fries with dinner tonight in case it’s my last chance to go wild with carbs lol.
Anyone else doing the test this week? How are you feeling about it?

I still won't need to take it for a few weeks but with DD I failed the one hour and had to do the three hour test. It was pretty brutal for me fasting and they were running late at the blood place so I got pretty dizzy and did not feel good at all for the rest of the day. I passed that one though thankfully. Hopefully you pass!

I had to do it early, (the 2 hour, fasting test) and I passed. I now get to do it again, just have to call and book the appointment.
I'm feeling okay about it, since I passed it once and passed it my last pregnancy as well. Good luck!

I don't have mine until later this month. I didn't have any issues last time, so I'm not too worried about it besides actually drinking the stuff.
FX for everyone that's taking it soon!

I have my 1 hour in about 2 weeks. I’m nervous because if I do have it I can only imagine what’s involved... I would assume insulin shots, that part makes me the most anxious.
I was showing insulin resistance (pcos) prior to getting pregnant and was on metformin so I’m not sure if there’s any correlation between the two, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
I keep focusing on if I do have it how beneficial it will be for weight gain to commit to low carb eating, which I did a lot of prior to getting pregnant and lost over 10 lbs. in a short span, I’m no stranger to diet restrictions although I’ve never had to while pregnant. I should be resuming that eating lifestyle soon after baby anyway, so if it comes sooner than it may just make that transition post baby more manageable. Trying to focus on what I can control.
Tl:dr- gd test in ~2 weeks, wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t pass due to insulin resistance prior to pregnancy

I’m at the lab, and I just found out the test is 2 hrs not 3 hrs like I thought. Now what to do with my extra hour?!? Do I go straight home to DD (DH is watching her), do I do the responsible thing and get groceries for the week, or do I go to the nice bookstore with the Starbucks in it around the corner? Maybe I’ll go get a brow wax! Also mirabelle I just want to reassure you that GD does not necessarily mean insulin shots. When I had it with DD mine was controlled with diet only. Also, neither of us had any issues with high or low sugars after delivery, and she was a normal size (born at 7lbs 12oz at 41+1). The diet was annoying at times, as was all the testing, but overall it wasn’t as terrible as I thought it would be.

chriskoo did you have to test your blood sugar multiple times a day, are you able to speak to how that all goes? Are there increased doctors visits with gd? And lastly, can gd cause you to have to deliver earlier than otherwise?

I'll find out at my check-up Friday when I need to schedule the test. mirabelle - My BFF had GD with her first pregnancy, but not her second. Hers was also controlled by diet only, no insulin needed. Her daughter was 6lbs can't remember oz and had no sugar issues at birth.

And lastly, can gd cause you to have to deliver earlier than otherwise? Yep I had to test pretty frequently. I think it was once in the morning right after waking, and again one hour after each meal. When I was diagnosed I had an appointment with a dietitian (it was like a group class) where we learned about the diet, testing requirements, etc. We got our meter that day as well. The meter was cool because it synced with my iPhone and recorded all the values in an app. It made graphs, showed acceptable ranges, etc. I just showed my phone to the OB at each visit so she could see how it was going. Other than the dietician appointment I don’t think I had any extra doctor visits associated with it. I did get I think 2 extra ultrasounds towards the end to check growth. Even with the GD I still went overdue with DD. I delivered at 41+1 - would have been induced the next day if I hadn’t gone into labour. I think some people do end up getting induced earlier, especially if baby measures big. In fact, my OB said that if I have it this time they won’t let me go past 39 weeks. Apparently protocol had changed in the last couple of years.

My 1 hr is Thursday. I’ve never had GD before, so I don’t expect it this time, but who knows?

Aaaaannnd as I expected, I failed the test. Boo. Got a call from my OB today. The good news is that since I've been through it recently with DD and was able to manage with diet alone, I don't have to go to the dietician this time, just start the diet and monitor at home. Oh well, it's better to know so I can be proactive. I will miss having a bagel in the morning though!

I'm sorry chriskoo. But at least it's good that you already know what to do and what to expect.

Boo, sorry chriskoo. That's nice they're not making you repeat the dietitian appointment at least.

Sorry, chriskoo. I’m there with you though! I was borderline with my daughter so I tested early this time and failed. It’s been a different ballgame though. Different types of foods are working/not working and I’m struggling with my fasting numbers. Meal numbers are fine. GD is so strange sometimes! I’m jealous you got the skip the class/clinic. I wasn’t as lucky.’

For those who have or have had GD, what kinds of symptoms did you experience? I sometimes feel like I'm experiencing low blood sugar and I don't know if it's I'm just not eating enough or if I'm possibly having some GD symptoms. Any thoughts appreciated swell chriskoo and any others who know!

blurnette989 I’m not much help because I don’t think I’ve had any symptoms related to my GD. Maybe I’m just not in tune with my body, but I physically feel the same no matter what my blood sugar reads on the glucometer. That said, I haven’t experienced any extreme highs or lows with either pregnancy. It definitely makes me recognize the importance of screening for this because otherwise I don’t think I’d know I have it.

I didn't have GD with my first and haven't done the test yet for this one, but I experience low blood sugar issues when I don't eat enough even when not pregnant. I get dizzy and lightheaded, if it goes long enough I'll get shaky and nauseated. Since we do need to eat a bit more when pregnant it would not surprise me for someone who may not previously have experienced this to have it happen during pregnancy, without being related to GD.

What were you told to eat/not eat before your glucose test? I think I might take mine tomorrow morning and last time I failed by 3 points (my ob wants less than 128 but I've heard many others will accept anything under 140) and when I did my three hour the phlebotomist said if I had fasted beforehand I would have probably passed. Did you/are you going to fast before the 1 hour? If not what will you eat before it?

brenna I was simply told not to eat anything sugary before my one-hour. And I was not told to fast. Very laid back instructions!

I was specifically told to avoid sugar in my coffee and if I typically had fruit with breakfast to skip that as well. I had a couple slices of toast with peanut butter and passed no problem. This time I'll probably have the same just to have something in my stomach since me and not eating don't go well together even when not pregnant, then go for my test late morning so I can eat lunch as normal after the test.
