clementine How is your skin doing? I’ve been thinking about you - any changes to your routine yet? Hope things are getting better! Thank you for checking on me! I’m doing okay. I almost updated a couple days ago that things were looking up, because I could tell my skin was feeling more hydrated and there were very minimal new breakouts. But then the next day, I started breaking out worse again. I initially just started using the oil cleanser, cerave hydrating cleanser, honest company hydration mist, and cerave moisturizer. Then a few days in I added the hada labo HA solution and snail once they came in the mail. I was hesitant to try the cosrx sleeping pack once it came because I didn’t know if I should be adding another new thing. So I’m not sure if any of those caused the breakouts or if it’s just my cycle which is still a bit weird since I stopped nursing. Or if it’s just my skin still trying to figure stuff out. Who knows. I had high hopes that finallyyyy something might work, and I’ve been feeling crappy the past couple days with the breakouts again. It’s really only been just under 2 weeks, so I’m sure I need to give it more time. I’m not giving up yet, and it’s really not worse than it was before. So even if the acne isn’t going away, I’m at least saving money on products and hopefully keeping my skin hydrated. ETA: I started with the softymo speedy cleansing oil and cerave hydrating cleanser, then switched to the hada labo oil cleanser and cerave foaming facial cleanser after a few days. It’s hard to tell if the timing was just a coincidence or how long after starting a new product that I’d see a difference, whether good or bad, but I felt like I started noticing better hydration and less new breakouts within a few days of starting with softymo/hydrating cleanser, then a few days after switching to hada labo/foaming cleanser, it started getting more dry and more breakouts. I’ve also been trying to drink lots more water and change my pillowcase every other day.

I’ve also been trying to drink lots more water and change my pillowcase every other day. Sorry to hear it’s been up and down for you! One thing I forgot to mention is that when changing up your routine, it’s a good idea to only introduce one new product at a time - otherwise, if you try a bunch of new stuff at the same time and have an adverse reaction, it’s not possible to find the culprit. Most recommend waiting about 4 days to a week after trying a new product before introducing another. If I were you, I’d cut out all the new products and then re-introduce one at a time, to see what could be going on. Also - oil cleansing isn’t always for everyone - if you think the oil cleanser is breaking you out, you could always try micellar water, or just wash your face with CeraVe a few times, to try to get off your makeup without using an oil cleanser. Using a dedicated eye/lipstick makeup remover just on those areas (before you use CeraVe) can also make it easier to get the rest of your makeup off. Hopefully things will look up! I do think sleeping masks aren’t for everyone too, so I would lay off that one for a bit and see if it could be the culprit.

Taitai yeah that makes sense to introduce one thing at a time. I was just so ready to do something different and anxious to try out all the things, but I’m planning to start with just the oil cleansing, cerave cleanser, and my regular cerave moisturizer. Any thoughts on the softymo vs hada labo cleansing oil? I saw that softymo has mineral oil which I’ve heard mixed reviews about. I’m not breaking out any worse than before, but it seemed to get better for a couple days so I was feeling encouraged. Like not a lot better, but overall less inflamed and breakouts seemed to be healing well with very minimal new ones.

Like not a lot better, but overall less inflamed and breakouts seemed to be healing well with very minimal new ones. I know how it is with wanting to try new things and being excited. I’ve made the same mistake in the past of trying too many new things at the same time - so have others here. It happens to the best of us. In terms of the oil cleanser - I have used softymo without issue. I haven’t tried the Hada Labo one. You are right - some don’t react well to mineral oil, but it really depends on your skin. My skin is fine with it, provided the product I use emulsifies/ rinses away well, and that I make sure to get all of the residue off with my second cleanser (and lots of splashing of water when I rinse off the oil cleanser). It could also be some other random ingredient that your skin doesn’t like. I tend to stay away from Hada Labo products, because they cause these little bumps all over my face every time I use them. I have no idea why - doesn’t do that when I use it on my body. So, just a general tip that what may be HG and beloved by many, might not work for you. Just keep that in mind as you’re trying new things out too.

Another question: if I have dry, sensitive skin and don't wear makeup, should I still consider oil cleaner followed by water cleaner? If I were to do only one, which would probably be better?
Also looking for recommendations on a great cleanser. I need to break up with Cetaphil.

Also looking for recommendations on a great cleanser. I need to break up with Cetaphil. If you wear sunscreen every day, then I think you should still do a double cleanse each night (oil first, then low ph water soluble cleanser). If you choose to only do one, for me...I’d go with the low ph water soluble cleanser, just because I think you run the risk of clogging your pores if you only oil cleanse and then don’t remove the oil residue with a second cleanse. However - your if your skin is dry, maybe it would tolerate oil only cleansing? I just know it wouldn’t work for me, so I would avoid doing that. In terms of a great cleanser - I love CeraVe foaming facial cleanser. You can get it on Amazon and it’s so cheap! www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Foaming-Facial-Cleanser-Washing/dp/B01N1LL62W?th=1&psc=1Cosrx lowph good morning cleanser is another great one. It does have a tea tree oil scent, which some might not like, but it doesn’t bother me. www.amazon.com/COSRX-Good-Morning-Cleanser-150ml/dp/B016NRXO06

I have ordered so much new stuff and I'm excited to try it! I promise to introduce slowly and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions. But for now, thank you Taitai! This info is so helpful.

Is anyone looking out for Black Friday deals? Good idea! I don’t think that Jolse does much for Black Friday, but I do remember getting good deals at Ulta on AB products in the past (like skinfood). I think Murad does something, and I’m sure there will be a lot going on at Sephora. Oooh - and I know I went nuts at Naruko for sheet masks one year. Got a bunch for like $0.80 each 👍 I’m so stocked up with stuff, that I’m on a buying freeze. However, I’m going to check out Murad for my mom, since she loves the skin perfecting lotion.

I just opened a new jar of it tonight (finally used up my Senka perfect oil cleanser), and I forgot how much I love the Banila cleansing balm. Oh well - maybe it will go on sale again sometime 🤷♀️

Newbie jumping in with a question! I've been following this thread on-and-off, and am now in need of a recommendation. I'm almost out of my vitamin C serum. I use it 2x daily and love it. I've noticed a huge change in my skin tone and softness. Currently I'm using the Eminence Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum. Honestly, it's pricey and I feel like there's something better or equivalent out there.
I have problematic skin (psoriasis, rosacea, and hormonal acne). It's also very sensitive (obviously LOL).
What vitamin C do you guys recommend?
(Also, thanks for all the amazing information in here!!!)

oldbaylover1024, i have seen the klairs freshly juiced vitamin c recommended here several times. it is supposed to be non-irritating but effective. i got through a whole tube of melano CC essence and while it was pleasant to use, it did not do anything for me as far as brightening. i'm using purito's vitamin C serum now, and while it is actually working, it has a really offensive smell and is somewhat irritating, so i don't know if i'd recommend it. the next thing i'm planning to try is the ordinary's L-ascorbic acid powder- you can mix it into a serum or lotion so it is always fresh (vitamin c serums oxidize quickly) and you can control how strong you make it. another one i see recommended frequently on reddit is timeless' vitamin c & ferulic acid-- but you should buy directly from their website bc the stuff on amazon is apparently not always fresh.

My sister likes the Klairs freshly juiced, as well as this one from Mamonde: m.jolse.com/product/mamonde-vital-vitamin-essence-100ml/15988/I order the Mamonde one for her from Jolse, but I know there are other places that sell it. Good luck in your search!

So I’m pretty much as novice to skincare as a girl can get. I use cetaphil face wash and the Walmart knock off of aveeno face lotion with spf. I have cystic acne from PCOS a lot and I have blackheads like you wouldn’t believe. My face is fairly neutral on oil, although my nose does dry and peel and will get mildly oily-ish in the summer. I don’t even know where to start. I also have an incredibly tight budget. Help a girl out pretty please?

Radley, what do you do for your PM routine? here is a basic routine for AM/PM: AM: splash face with water and pat dry moisturizer sunscreen with at least SPF 30 (you can use the 2 in 1 if it works for you, but apparently most people don't apply enough of it for the SPF to be fully effective) PM: oil cleanse (to remove makeup/sunscreen), followed by gentle cleanser splash your damp face with a hydrating toner (do several layers if your skin is drinking it up) moisturizer sleeping pack to seal in the moisture (if you feel you need it, but it's probably a good idea if you are in a place that is experiencing winter temps right now) i would start with this and then add in an active after you cleanse in the evening to address acne- you could try salicylic acid (or differin if you want something more heavy-duty). where do you feel most comfortable shopping? would you rather utilize readily-available drugstore brands or are you willing to buy things online?

PSA i have been seeing a lot of Dr. Jart and Laniege in TJ Maxx/Marshall's lately... they are selling last year's Dr. Jart holiday sets (expiration date is still 2 years hence). this morning i stopped in to tj maxx and ended up getting a dr. jart ceramidin set, a laniege water sleeping mask, and a dr. jart water drop moisturizer. in general they just have an insane amount of beauty stuff and seem to be getting in more daily (every time i'm in there they seem to be restocking the beauty area). they also have boscia, clinique, kiehl's, glamglow, first aid beauty, etc. etc.

Usually I wash my face in the shower in the evening with the cleanser. I don’t do anything in the morning except moisturizer if I plan on doing make up. I don’t really use make up anymore so it’s not been a big deal. I know nothing about night cream vs. day or anything. I do have awful dark circles/tired eyes. Any brand/type suggestions. I can do Walmart, CVS, Walgreens and online is easiest, although honestly, ulta isn’t far away. I really mostly need affordable. Nothing that’s going to cost $50 for a single item.

ok, to try to minimize the amount of things you need to buy... AM: splash face with water apply non-spf moisturizer (whatever you have and like) apply SPF-- asian-style sunscreens are very thin and watery so they are easy to apply and don't feel heavy. biore uv aqua rich watery essence is really nice. people on reddit also rave about this purito centella sunscreen but i haven't tried it yet. PM: if you want to try oil cleansing (which removes your makeup and sunscreen, but some say it helps with acne as well-- like dissolves like and all that so it's maybe helping clean gunk out of your pores), kose softymo speedy cleansing oil is an inexpensive option. follow the oil cleanse with your gentle cleanser (cetaphil, cerave, etc.) then pat 1 or more layers of this toner onto your damp face (huge bottle, has a mild sake scent but it fades quickly): kikumasamune high moist lotionfollow with a non-spf moisturizer (again, whatever you have and like-- night creams just tend to be heavier and richer than day creams, but you can use night creams during the day if you want... i just wouldn't use a cream with spf at night ) then a sleeping pack if you want (a sleeping pack is just a heavier moisturizer with an occlusive ingredient-- something thick like petroleum jelly, beeswax, or a silicone to minimize the amount of water that evaporates from your skin). a cheap DIY sleeping pack alternative is to simply mix a dab of aquaphor or cerave healing ointment with more of your moisturizer and apply that as a 2nd layer. just making sure your skin is hydrated can help with acne. if your skin is dehydrated (lacking water), it can actually overproduce oil to compensate and cause acne. a focus of asian beauty routines is layers of hydration (toner, moisturizer, sleeping pack). if you want to target acne later on, you could add in a face wash with salicylic acid in the evening, or some other kind of leave-on salicylic acid treatment. the ordinary is a really inexpensive skincare brand (available online, although they have select products in ulta) and is a good source of a lot of basic ingredients (for instance, they have a salicylic acid serum, a basic moisturizer, an oil cleanser, etc.). they also make a caffeine serum for undereyes. although TBH i don't know that an eye cream or treatment does all that much for dark circles. however, making sure you are hydrated will probably make your underyes look better.
