Are you guys doing anything to celebrate first birthdays coming up? Or if it's past, what did you do? Party? Cake? Birthday outfits? Tell us all about it!

How is it time for this thread already?!
I'm being a mean, no fun mom (according to DH) because I'm making the boys share a party. Their birthdays are six weeks apart and real talk, DS2 wouldn't know the difference anyway.
DS1 loves Jurassic Park so we'll have a JP cake and decorations but basically it's just a cook out where the kids can run around outside and the adults can chill with some adult beverages.

We're still 4.5 months out, but I'm super extra so I'm planning already. As of now, we're doing a baseball theme (rookie of the year). Not many details planned yet.
We're also scheduling family photos around that time, which will be the first time since our engagement photos 7 years ago.

I stuffed her 1st birthday invites tonight *sob*
We are moving Memorial Day weekend and her birthday is June 8th so we are doing a combined 1st birthday/housewarming. We are having a BBQ place cater and it will just be at our house and hopefully nice out so the kids can play outside and we can sit on the deck. No theme or anything really.

I want to get something for J that he will actually enjoy. I was thinking one of those scoot around bikes but H was skeptical that he would actually ride it. Is there a favorite must-have toy for your kiddos?

Is there a favorite must-have toy for your kiddos? Bright start barrel monkey. We got DS2 his own saranoni blanket, his yumbox, some books, and magnetic blocks.

piratecat DS1 got a ride on Thomas the train, the kind you can push and sit on for his first birthday. He still uses it every single day and he's almost 3.

I turn the 1st birthday into a big “we survived! party.” We typically do a subway sandwich platter, pasta salad, and I make a cake. I also serve a champagne toast. DS2’s party is tomorrow so I’m off today to get everything together. Party city didn’t have the jungle boy 1st birthday supplies so I have the cars and planes ones. Oh well. DS1’s first birthday was monkey themed. I tend to do the first in an animal/jungle theme and the others to their tastes. They each get a shirt with their name and animal that their loveys are. For DS2, this is a giraffe. I’d have done a giraffe theme for his birthday, but the stuff online wasn’t for me... DS1’s shirt and DS2’s I also like doing them in the older ages so far... (we didn’t do a birthday party for DS1s 2nd). I like seeing how much they grew

I sent out the invites the other day 😭 We're doing an under the sea theme at the house, since F loves the aquarium so much. I'm hoping for good weather, since I don't know how my new house will handle the crowd. We're going to have it catered, but also have some themed food (shrimp, goldfish crackers, oreo crabs, etc.). My cousin is super crafty so we're theoretically also doing a bunch of pinterest-esque themed decorations. I'll also have bubbles for the kids, some sensory play with baggies, and a sand table. And booze. Definitely booze. Somehow I forgot about the booze.

How far in advance did you/will you send invitations? Just need an extra scale. We have family everywhere. I think we are sending invitations everywhere to be polite. But what if they all come?!? So send early enough for people to plan a visit, like 2 months ahead? or late enough to keep the party in check. Like 2 weeks? I do a month so my in laws can plan their travels (and ds1's birthday is right after the winter holidays so it's already a crazy time of year).

Last question then I need to sleep. Birthday gift registries. Rude ? I imagine 45 people asking what we need. But look it’s on the invite? I don’t like the way that feels though. Rather no gift. But people don’t listen. Do not need junk. My cousin has done a registry for a first birthday. Eh. She only did it one year so idk if someone told her it was tacky or what. I always ask for no gifts but if they feel compelled, to bring an item for the food bank or animal shelter. I'll be doing the same thing for ds2's birthdays.

Is there a favorite must-have toy for your kiddos? Not really a toy, but Ds1 (3yo) still uses his pottery barn anywhere chair that we got him for his 1st birthday. It's on the list for ds2 as well.

We still haven’t firmly decided what we are going to do. J’s 1st birthday is on June 1st. I HAVE to attend my college’s graduation. I missed last year because I was obviously in the hospital giving birth and our union contract says we can’t miss 2 years in a row...ugh! So we may go out to dinner on her actual birthday after graduation.
I’ve kind of been planning a birthday party at the local park’s banquet room. The room is right next to the playground we always take J to swing. I booked the room about a month ago, but I’ve been going back and forth about having the party at the park. When I finally booked the room, the weekend of June 1st was already booked. The only dates they had available in June (on the weekends) were Father’s Day and June 30th. So I took June 30th, but I’m feeling like this is so far away from her birthday. I don’t know maybe I’m over thinking it.

ttcbabyj you’re over thinking. It really doesn’t matter when you do the party. I flat out refuse to spend their birthdays with my ILs so I’ve never held it on their birthdays

DH said the same thing about the date. The end of June actually works better for me because I’m off work.

ttcbabyj I'm doing a joint party for my boys. DS2 will be 13 months and DS1 will still have another week and a half until he turns 3. So it's really not close to anyone's birthday. Definitely not a big deal, people will fawn over the birthday kid either way. And a one year old doesn't know the difference anyway 😉

I vote you don’t have to. I only went to one where they did and it was for a 2yo so I got not age appropriate toys and candy. So I ate the candy and gave the toys to my niece. So kinda a waste, in my opinion Yea, the kids' ages range from 6 months to... 7/8? if the friend comes, 4 if just family. I have no idea what favors we would even do.

Also I don't want to jinx myself but I feel like J is finally in a good place with sleep. He goes down without a fuss and sleeps until 5:30 when I nurse him, and then goes back to sleep until 6:30, or sometimes fusses for a couple of minutes and goes back to sleep until 7:30. He is also napping in the crib relatively consistently, which has been really great.

Okay, this actually goes here.
What kind of cake for the kiddos? Are you doing a healthy cake? Regular cake? Smash cake?
