I know you guys are not doctors (well, most of you aren't), but I was wondering if anyone had experience. I am having some pretty bad right lower abdominal pain, and it has been off and on for a couple weeks but this seems a bit worse than normal (short bouts of really bad pain). I had the Mirena inserted about 3.5 months ago. I'm not bleeding or even spotting (I thought I was getting a period but I'm dumb because it was because I had eaten beets 😂).
Google isn't helping. I'm not *really* freaked out, but I have had two friends who had perforated uteruses which I know is rare, but it was my first thought. I'm not nauseous, otherwise it seems like appendicitis might be a consideration?
Obviously if it persists or especially if it gets worse, I will give my OB gyn a call.
TIA!

I would be worried it could be your appendix and the pain over the last few weeks was as it became inflamed. But I know nothing about how appendixes go from happy to pissed off. So if it gets bad I would go to the ER so they can rule that out.

It isn't terrible pain and I haven't had a decrease in appetite or nausea at all, which makes me think probably not. But I am sure it can be less severe in some people.

I think only one person in my entire extended family has had theirs out. I hope the pain stops!

We got the mirena around the same time and I've been keeping track of my periods and symptoms since. I've noticed I have sharp pains on the lower right side, above my hip bone, about a week before my period begins. Also nausea and dizziness. My periods have been super light (practically just spotting), but last an eternity.
It wouldn't hurt to call your OB for a quick check

Super lurker here... but I got ovarian cysts on Mirena. Google also told me it was a uterine perforation... but it was a cyst rupturing when I felt I was legit birthing my IUD.

I dealt with pain like this on and off for about four months and finally just had to get the damn thing removed. My pain was low pelvic though. I saw three doctors and they had no answers for me so I made the decision to take it out. We live the condom life right now.

I had some pain like that the first few months with mine but placement was confirmed by ultrasound so I was not too worried and it went away.

Thank you, ladies! This is all really helpful. It has subsided for now, so I will just keep an eye on it. Jesslfar I remember my OB saying that I could have some discomfort for the first 6 months or so, so I'm hoping it is just symptoms that will go away.

A quick ultrasound would rule out, or diagnose, a lot very quickly.

I've had my mirena over a year now. I don't recall getting pain on one side... just mild cramping.
My dad and both brother have had appendicitis and all became very ill before figuring out that's what it was....
Have they done an ultrasound to confirm it's placement?

This was me both times I was on the mirena. I ended up in the ER twice because the doctor couldn’t find my mirena strings. But after ultrasound showed it was still in place it also showed I had ruptured cysts. They can hurt really bad... good luck! I hope your pain goes away. If it was me I’d definitely check in with my doctor. Just for peace of mind.

Last time I had pain that sounds like that it was ovarian cysts (and I had a mirena in). We took the mirena out but t didn’t affect the cysts- they were unrelated. I had lower abdominal pain varying in intensifying for a couple months until one cyst rupture. Then the pain mostly went away.

Oh and the first IUD I had ‘fell out’ (Dr’s words not mine). And that was painful during sex, so it was removed and new one in place. Is there pain during sex? Nope, no pain during sex, so that's good. H can't feel the strings or anything.

The pain hasn't come back yet today so that's good.

Lurker here...when I had appendicitis, it started as constant stomach cramps/puking. I thought it was food poisoning and after 8 hours I went to the ER because it wasn’t getting better.
By the time the dr saw me, the pain had shifted to my right side, which apparently is a tell tale sign. They confirmed it with an ultrasound and I had surgery the next morning.
If you think it’s something get it checked out!

I'm going to see how I feel tonight and in the morning.

If you can jump without intense pain it is unlikely to be appendicitis

If you can jump without intense pain it is unlikely to be appendicitis That is what I figured. And the fact that the pain has subsided for hours. I didn't even think of it until I googled, but Dr. Google is the worst.

Is @jboogie the one who had one fail horribly? Yes. Mine migrated away from where it was placed and I had 2 different surgeries to remove it. Ugh. I'm really sorry. The fact that two of my closest friends had perforated uteruses from it really made me hesitant to get it in the first place, so those types of things are at the front of my mind. I feel fine today, so I will just keep monitoring. Thanks for all your anecdotes!

This sounds really similar to the pain I had when my Mirena perforated my uterus. I'm not trying to scare you because I know it's super rare. Can you feel the string? If you can't it still doesn't mean anything, but I would definitely be calling the OB. I kept reading some pain was normal but after a month I finally tried to find it and could not so I called and sure enough it was gone. They were able to tell with a quick internal ultrasound.

I had similar pain, and was really freaked out by Dr. Google, and then couldn't find the strings, so went in to get an ultrasound. The IUD was in the right location, and, as my doctor put it after looking at my ovaries, my body "returning to fertility" (it was within the first year of having the IUD, and while I was still nursing DD).

Ahh okay interesting, this would also make sense for me. DD2 is 5 months and I am BFing.
