Yoga brings me so much anxiety relief. I finally found a great teacher at my new gym and it's just so enjoyable. Also I saw this video on instagram and it is #goals http://instagr.am/p/BUeEOcRAPtV Thanks for my new goal of the day. Just practiced this about 5 times, lol

pearbear, that's what I like too. She has lots of unscripted moments that make it feel like a real time class rather than a sterile video.

I honestly haven't done yoga, so couldn't compare the two, but I wouldn't consider anything in piyo as cardio. But I guess that may still be more than yoga? Maybe I'm just waaaaay out of shape then. It's definitely more intense than yoga. Does your heart rate not increase during a session? So piyo is a tricky wench. The first few weeks were all easy breezy, and then they kick it up, and I'm definitely getting the cardio aspect of it now.

I don't know how I've been missing the yoga thread! I do yoga 4-5 times a week (mostly vinyasa/flow with a little bit of yin) and it's my favorite hour of most days. When I miss several days in a row it definitely affects my mood.

Love this! I've font yoga on and off since high school and have done it at studios and the gym. I have just cancelled my gym membership, so I look forward to checking out these videos.

I find classes very beneficial, but they are expensive for sure. Me too. For people practicing at home, I'd recommend trying to go to a studio once in awhile too.

I love the studio/classes. I personally benefit a lot from the instruction on my form and from the extra push. I find that I have very strong preferences in teachers. When I find one I like, I tend to follow her schedule. We joined a studio last year (and dropped our gym membership) which was basically the only way to make my 4-5 times a week affordable.
I also personally benefit a lot from the quiet in the studio. I can never achieve that level of focus at my house (maybe a personality flaw or an indicator of my lack of spiritual enlightenment.) I LOVE the absolute single-mindedness of practice at the studio. Again personality thing, I like to exercise around other people but not with them and a yoga studio is great for that.

I have been so slack with my practice lately. With the kids around all the time I find it harder to get to the studio. I envy those of you who can practice at home. I need to really try that. My class today was great, I'm going again tomorrow to a hot flow class.

This weekend I took H to a super mellow yin class with me (it was part of a "staycation" deal that included a massage and soak in the bathhouse). The class included deep stretching, restorative poses, and rolling with massage balls. It was faaantastic! At least I thought so. H was like... we were just laying there. Lol.

I am dying to get my H into yoga, he could benefit from it in so many ways. But I feel like I have to wait for him to ask about it, if I try to push him he won't go. There are several mellow classes that would be a good fit, like a yin or align/refine.

Yoga International has a 30 day free challenge on their website. 15 mins a day. I was doing day two last night and the instructor (who just talks giving a one to one lesson to another woman in the video) would say do this or point your leg that way...SO was like...is she watching you? Apparently the common mistakes...I has them.

I don't think I could talk W into going though. I asked if she wanted to join in my 15 mins last night and just got a "yeah...no. I'm good...Are you done yet?"

I practiced pretty regularly a few years ago, and my practice is now sporadic at best, but I am trying to make it consistent. I'd be interested in a yoga thread! As for mats, you can get one very cheaply that's not bad at places like TJMaxx, but if you want to go all out, the Manduka brand is amazing. They will last forever, but they are expensive. I use the ProLite. I mostly practiced hot, so a yoga towel was also necessary. I recently saw Manduka mats at TJ Maxx, I think it was the Pro? They had them for like $35 which is a great deal because they normally run $70-90 depending on on the thickness. I use a Manduka and I really like it, it did take a while to break in and get more sticky. Oddly my old cheapie was stickier but not as padded. I have a Manduka mat too and I really love it now, but I would only recommend with the caveat that someone would be willing to commit to the long break in period. I feel like it took foreeeeever for it to be broken in and get sticky and I pretty much hated it before then because it was so slippery.

Ok I'm bumping this thread because it sounds like a lot of you are starting new fitness programs. I've never done a Whole anything or BBM or the like. Now that all the kids are back in school I have more time and I just renewed my pass at my regular studio. I went today but I can definitely tell I'm not as strong as I was a month ago. I need to build up my arms and core a bit more because I think my shoulders are dumping a little in my salutations. scoutboo @rocknroll thisbitch and @anyoneelsewhoisinterested

Hi! I'm here. I belong to a Bikram style studio and I go 4-5 days per week. I had heard of Bikram before I joined and always wanted to try it, but I didn't think I would like it. I got a Groupon there a little over a year ago, and I found that I love it. I got my H a groupon to get him to try it, and he loves it, too. We ended up purchasing memberships when they were running their holiday specials last year.
I went this morning. It was hard to get used to the sweating at first, but now I feel so cleansed (or something) after.

One thing I want to get back to with the whole life challenge is a regular committed yoga practice. There aren't any studios close to me but When I lived in the city I just loved hot yoga. Home practice isn't as glamorous but it still feels better than nothing so I'd like to get back into it.

I started daily yoga in March and have loved it. Morning sickness has put a pause in my practise over the summer but I'm starting to feel okay again. Does anyone have prenatal yoga recs?
There's a lot of conflicting info out there with regards to what's okay to do and what's not so idk where to start.

But don't try to start practicing after you're KU. I don't know any specifics but I would just include plenty of modifications as you go along like using a block or putting down a knee. *im not an instructor

How do I go about finding a good studio in my area?

How do I go about finding a good studio in my area? You can look at reviews on FB or Yelp, but it's really a personal preference thing for most people, and there are so many different styles of instruction. In my area a lot of studios will have free or cheaper "community classes," or even an open house event, so you can try out different studios and styles to find one you like. Studios here also sell a "pass" that can be used at a bunch of different studios in the area for one class each. I really want to do that one day, but got lucky by finding a studio I love right off the bat.

dreadpirateroberts, I tried quite a few studios using groupon and then trying the different intro offers at different studios.

How do I go about finding a good studio in my area? Is Class Pass a thing in your area? That's a service where you can try classes at different studios. BUT most studios have introductory prices. I tried a new one today and it was $20 for your first 3 classes.

I may have just had some sticker shock, because the place I was looking for was like $100 a month, which was for unlimited classes, but it was just more than I was expecting.

I think you are better off doing a package of some sort. Unlimited sounds great in theory but I go 2 times per week and that is hard to fit in. I don't know if I could make it to more. I supplement with videos at home if I want more. My yoga is actually at my gym, so I pay monthly but use it for more than just yoga.

A hundred bucks per month is pretty normal for studio fitness places around me (yoga included). The fancy places are more, but I've had very good experience with the smaller local places, so I stay there. At my studio, unlimited is $100/mth. Drop-in classes are $20. A 10 class pass is $165, and a 20 class pass is $265. If you pay in advance for a year membership, it's $1000. I go to another studio, but I only maintain a class pass at the second studio. The second studio periodically runs specials (most places do around Christmas) and I restock my class pass when they're running a special. For me, the monthly unlimited is worth it but my studio has two rooms- a yoga studio and a strength training room. It's basically my gym and I go 4-5 days per week, usually.

I have the MINDBODY app on my phone and I customized it with all my favorite studios. It helps me to have it all listed in one place and I can narrow it down based on what time a class is and who the teacher is. I also have all my passes stored in the app. I just click on "Thursday" and see what classes fit my schedule that day. There are always specials too, back to school, Black Friday, New Years... I have bought passes on Groupon, some places let you drop in for free for a first class, discounts for teachers, military, F&B etc. Students get a good discount too. Look and see what the studios offer in the way of dicounts. My pass is $85 a month (unlimited) with a discount so it sounds pricey but my classes average $7 and that's half the drop in rate. Finding a good fit is definitely trial and error but worth it in the end for me. It's like a good therapist.

I'm starting to get back on track since school started. I went to Vinyasa flow yesterday and hot flow today. They were both great classes and I sweated out some extra fluid I hope. My teacher is great, we worked on some arm balances and hip openers. I've also tried to cut some things out of my "diet", I hate using that word. No wheat, sugar, alcohol or dairy. I'm only on day 2 though so hopefully I can keep this up.
