mb3 and @heartbot whenever you don't answer a "mandatory" question on your census form they will send a census taker to your home to try to get the missing information. The citizenship question has been deemed mandatory. I don't know what happens if you refuse to answer the question repeatedly, but am fairly confident they don't throw out all your results. Trying to confirm with my dad who worked PR/Community relations for the 2000 census. I had seen that they’ll send a worker to your home up to 6x and that there is a fine both for not answering as well as a higher one for providing a false answer. I’m probably not making much sense, I’m just infuriated over this question being in there at all. They will knock multiple times to get a response but if you partially respond they typically go about their business. I’ve never known the fines to be leveraged, though I’m sure it happens. The thing is that politicizing the census is just SO against its foundation and guiding principles. I’m very outraged by this.

Ah, that would explain the census rep that was trying to get me to identify the race of some residents in an assisted living center I worked at previously. I've never been approached about questions otherwise. 😬 The fine bit is yikes to me. Not *for* me, since I'm probably priviledged enough to make a political statement that way depending on the amount of the fine. But many people can't afford that, absolutely making that coercion. And also disrespectful since there very well may be language barriers, etc.

Me reading The Hunger Games in 2008: wow what a crazy, unrealistic story
2018: children are going to the capital to fight for their right to not be murdered by each other and a creepy looking TV star is there pretending like nothing is wrong

I’ve done a lot of geneolgy research on my family and love looking over old census records. I’ve always found them extremely interesting. 2010 was the first census I actually participated in as an adult and I was legit excited to do so, and even briefly considered being one of those door to door people because I felt like it was so important to have every single person counted. I have zero desire to assist with it in any way in 2020.

Can you expand on your second to last comment about politicizing the census? I don't know much about the history of it, but I don't think it's possible to ever have a completely a-political one given the very nature of the topical curation and language and modes of dissemination. Genuinely curious about the history of intentional politicization of the census.

I have spent several hours on the phone with the census people this year. Around 10 phone conversations. I appreciate the census and its importance but I was somehow selected to be someone they want to ask 1 million questions of and it is.. a lot.

But at this point almost as frustrating as the briefing. we’re learning how to read recipes and bake ‘by myself’ Watching a 7 year old crack eggs on the top instead of the middle because it’s less messy is about as maddening

Aaaaaannnddd now the Minnesota Republican leadership is now comparing the kids from the Parkland School shooting with Hitler youth. And with that She is awful but she's not leadership. I think she has only ever been a vice-chair for a committee and got that taken away.

So the cops who shot Alton Sterling won't be charged. Such bullshit. There's video, he had already been tazed, and was on his back with 2 cops on top of him when he was shot. So many racist pieces of shit with blood on their hands involved in this.

Um, so, I'm getting weird popups w/ malware alerts when I come to the board. Admin ??? The next time it happens, get a screen shot for me. Is it redirecting you? It should automatically be caught by the PB system, but definitely get a screenshot so I can pass it on. You can post it here or I can give you an email address to send it.
