I keep thinking about this corporal punishment. I know I live in a complete liberal bubble, but I just can't imagine this being ok or common in schools.
If a school proposed this as a way to punish my daughter, I just... I'm speechless. Livid wouldn't even cover it. I would burn it down.
I keep seeing people say that it was light and didn't "really" hurt. But to a high schooler? Is it about pain or humiliation? Both? It just seems sooo wrong on so many levels. My head spins.
I was arguing about this with a colleague, she said that when she was in 2nd grade the teacher hung a kid who never listened on the coat hooks. She remembered it as amusing. My heart hurts for that poor kid. Maybe he had special needs that weren't recognized back then, and could have used more support in helping to stay focused on class.
I'm so disgusted that people think this is ok.

I don’t know why because it’s all horrid, but this infuriated me too. Like almost the most of all the crap that has been done. I just never thought we as a democracy would let something like that slide. I know we’ve always had “political families” but presumably all those people (like the Kennedys) were qualified in their own right. They got money, name recognition, and a helping hand for sure, but their resumes were at least in the sphere of qualified. I think we discussed this back in 2016 bc we assumed a President HRC might offer Chelsea a job in the administration and we fully expected State TV to lose their minds. But Chelsea is actually qualified. She has a DPhil in international relations from Oxford FFS. And masters degrees in public health and history. Ivanka has a bachelor's degree in economics. Hey now - a bachelor's in econ is, ummmm...., very important. Much studious. Lol. I'm not qualified for the WH and neither is she.

The best thing in the world is a floating holiday at work when school/daycare is open. I'll be here all day. I'm happy for you, but I think this is going to jinx your meeting/firing link. Someone's getting canned today. I feel it.

Pretty sure I said this yesterday, but corporal punishment is the norm in the rural south. At home, in schools. Not defending it, but sort of baffled by how shocked people are given how ubiquitous it is. Honestly, having grown up there and putting this into cultural context, getting licks is a much lighter punishment than suspension, which is why the kids took it. Having lived in both the south and CA, it is really just a world of difference on that front. It would be entirely shocking in my bubble of CA to find out that anyone I knew used any sort of corporal punishment and I can't even imagine the level of burn it down that would happen if someone other than a parent used it on a child. when I was growing up, not so much (my parents employed it and I think it was the norm), but now even a couple of decades later it is so taboo. But, I totally see your point because I saw a difference in the south.

This story has been depressing me for a couple of days now: nypost.com/2018/03/15/couple-fleeing-from-ice-agents-die-in-crash/Basically a couple pulled over when they saw flashing lights thinking it was a traffic stop, but when they realized it was ICE agents, they sped off, lost control of their car and died. They are believed to be undocumented and they left behind 6 children. This happened in an area where ICE has stepped up "enforcement" so they were right to be afraid. This is so needless and, guess what GOP, now you are on the hook for supporting these children, so nice work. Rage.

I grew up in north Louisiana so very southern and pretty rural. Corporal punishment was very very common in homes, including mine, but most schools in my area had done away with it by the time I graduated high school. I was honestly surprised to see it still used in schools, even in the south.

I was listening to this yesterday as theranos is a huge local story here. He definitely wasn’t the only one that went all in on Theranos and the company was deceptive and fraudulent in how it presented itself. But still.....due diligence is a virtue.

Honestly, having grown up there and putting this into cultural context, getting licks is a much lighter punishment than suspension, which is why the kids took it. I'm sorry, I haven't read. I am definitely guilty of living in a liberal bubble up here, but it is just something that we never would even fathom...even 20 years ago when I was in high school. I quite honestly didn't realize how normalized it was. I definitely didn't realize it was so normalized still (and sorry, @heartbot, I see now you mentioned it in more detail). I can understand how generations may continue the practice but it does surprise me because of how childhood development training has evolved in the last few decades. My initial elementary school years were spent in a school that did paddling. One of my few memories from that school was that a boy in my class got paddled for kissing a little girl (it had been warned and given as a punishment after he didn't listen). We moved to a different state midway through my elementary school years and I wasn't exposed to it anymore. I would agree that there is a lot of living in a bubble in my case. I grew up in the midwest and now as an adult live in a very liberal area. Just looking at different kindergartens recently made me aware of the variety of discipline practices across the board.

So does this reinforce the theory that the divorce is a sham to hide assets or that it’s legit and she’s worried about herself and kids?
