Does anyone else have trouble getting your n’13 (or older kids at this age) to focus on learning type stuff? I’m STILL trying to get Gunner to write his name on his own (without dotted lines) He has zero interest and it’s like pulling teeth when we practice. My daughter was/is sooo much easier to work with. I would love any tips or suggestions of learning tools to work with him. My first thought is to try letting one of your sisters work with him. He'd probably do it for someone else. Lol. My second thought, which you may have already tried, is bribery. Write your name x many times and you'll get this treat/toy.

Well, daycare called about N’s eye. They’re going to let her nap there and see if it is any better (which I doubt) so looks like We’ll be heading to the clinic this afternoon

I'd agree with tgrimes that he might want to do it if someone else asks. I remember my sister being this way with my mom. One day my mom tried reverse psychology and said, "I'm not sure you can write your name. Maybe that's not something you know how to do yet." She was sitting across the table and without a word, she grabbed the paper and pencil, wrote it upside down so my mom could read it without flipping it around, and pushed it back across the table to her.

sands42 I know your system is different, so I’m coming from another perspective. At this age I wouldn’t be worried, reading and writing isn’t taught before they go to 1 grade (so around 6) over here. Most of us turn out just fine 😉. Ds can do simple math and knows a few letters because he finds it interesting. School doesn’t stimulate this one single bit and I’m more than okay with that. Plus, boys are often slower than girls with these type of things, they’ll catch up.

sands42 Do you have any of those dry-erase type books for tracing, etc? We got one at Target and B seems to like that. It's by Scholastic, "Wipe Clean Alphabet Workbook". He also likes to practice his letters on the MagnaDoodle. I let him practice when we sign cards (we seem to have had a lot of birthdays lately, so lots of cards!), or write a 'note' to Nana, or whatever...basically stuff other than just writing over and over on paper. Also, FWIW, I doubt B could write his name on lined paper right now. He can write the letters and they're typically in order, but he'll make a couple too big and have to go down below for the 'ey' or whatever. I think short bursts, as opposed to trying to get them to focus for big chunks of time, are best. Maybe try setting a timer for 5 or 10 minutes, so he knows he gets to play when that's done?

sands42 Instead of writing it try making it with other materials. Stamps, letter stickers, play doh. Then once he gets more used to the spelling of his name maybe he will write it. Also try different writing utensils like crayons, markers, paint, etc.

Omg flamingo. I can’t believe they even thought that was an option. O would never be comfortable driving with strange men, and of course neither would i. wineallthetime How long can the baby stay an inside baby with your water already broken? I always thought once your water breaks the baby has to come out within 24hours. Obviously i was wrong. Also, were you at home when it happened? Hoping today is a good day for you. That's what I thought! I guess awhile. However, it increases your risk of infection so they want the baby out unless you are before 24 weeks. They're monitoring me closely for infection and will deliver immediately with any signs. So.. I was home. However, I was having contractions that I thought were gas pains. Then I thought I peed my pants a tiny bit. Finally I went into triage for my "gas pains" since I thought they may be contractions. They did a check and found out my water had completely broken, it started gushing shortly after. I should've packed a hospital bag, I really thought it'd be nothing and we'd be on our way though!

My brother told me at this age you don't have to worry about whether the letters are correct, it's more of are they using the right shapes to make the letters. For instance Cadence does a lot of hers backwards or upside down. He said so long as her "d" includes a line and a circle, don't worry about what direction it is facing.

sands42, C had zero interest in learning to write his name until a month or so ago. He wouldn't even try! I think he finally learned in school and will do it now. He's not interested in learning to write anything else though really.

Also, Sands, C just recently started spelling his name out loud, but he's only right sometimes. He has no interest in spelling anything else and he thinks everything says his name.

sands42 T has very little interest in sitting and writing. He just started to write something that kinda sorta resembles his name when appropriately bribed. I'm not worried because DS1 was the same way and is an excellent student in 5th grade. DD on the other hand taught herself to write all the letters using a Leap Pad when she was 3. Lots of recent studies are saying kids with good social skills at this age become more successful than those with good academic ones (again those Europeans getting it right nam2013). T got a "progress report" last week and among lots of good stuff, it also said he knows the class rules but sometimes doesn't follow them and he should practice letters and numbers. I read it to him and he cried. I thought it was because of the following the rules part but he cried that he "doesn't want to know letters and numbers."

So my kidney stones are from high levels of calcium. I guess I didn't really need ice cream every single day when I was pregnant.

kim22 I agree, I think Europeans do 'school' at this level so much better than we do in many ways. B's teacher expressed to me a couple weeks before conferences last month that he was not learning his letters (numbers are fine) as he should be; we doubled down at home and he was fairly disinterested in working on it. He could spell/identify his name and that was about it. I talked with him about it and explained how we have to learn letters b/c that is the foundation for learning to read. He loves reading and that seemed to be his "lightbulb" moment; like now that he understands the WHY, he's willing to do more. We're just lucky that he enjoys reading so much so he's willing to do the letter-work if that is the end goal. I would be more concerned if he were starting K next year as some of the kids on this board are, but since he's got another year of preschool ahead of him, and will be there 5 mornings/week, it doesn't really concern me this school-year as long as he's making progress.

Thank you all for the advice and making me feel better about the situation! I guess since I’m a SAHM I feel like I should be teaching him all the things. He’s just more interested in playing. flamingo I just looked into the wipe clean book you suggested and there is a DC superhero version... I think that may entice him!

sands42 M was interested in learning to write, but I wasn’t good at helping him practice. It started just after I got pregnant with M2 and I also started working more. Being so worn out, I didn’t consistently give him the tools and attention he needed to learn. As soon as he started his current PreK class, he was all about writing his name and now can spell a few of his friends names, too. He still writes pretty big, but the size doesn’t matter, just that he is making the letters right. Ditto to the wipe clean books. His first was just a tracing book and he liked doing that. We got him a preschool wipe clean for Christmas and he likes doing that one now, too.

Re school in Europe. I don’t have enough knowledge about the us system to compare it to ours. We’re in a waldorf school, so even for Europe this philosophy is on the crunchy side. That being said, I’m so happy that for ds school is just fun, it’s about developing social skill, getting to know how their body moves and how to use it. They make bread every Thursday. They learn trough song, stories and dance. Nature is a big part of there education, they go on walks through their wood/garden every Tuesday. There is zero pressure to perform.

I can take or leave tulips, especially the single ones. I planted some double tulip bulbs in the fall and I’m so excited for them to bloom this spring. I did a mix of different colors/styles. I’ll share pics in like 2 months when the come up, lol. I also planted some peony roots and a lilac bush. I am so excited for all the spring flowers! I honestly don’t know if H can write her name yet. She has one of those dry erase books where she can trace letters and plays with that occasionally. I basically let school do all the teaching. 🤷🏻♀️ She has conferences next week so I suppose I will find out then. wineallthetime any word that starts with the letter H is her name if you ask her.

No more stones now. He gave me this paper to keep my calcium below a certain amount but it also has a warning that it is below recommended levels so you should weight benefits against risks lol. He didn't say it but I suspect the UTI I have now is the result of we didn't have sex for a long time with the csection and the kidney stones and so we had been making up for lost time. I go back in 6 months unless I have more problems before that.

kim22, were you taking antacids during your pregnancy? Those can cause a lot of calcium buildup.

These are 3 of the workbooks we have, the one on the left is a wipe clean (I have another one that is just letters but I’m not sure where it is right now). Her favorite is the cutting one. She would cut things all day every day.

Josie likes to write if there's a purpose attached to it- a note to her cousin or labeling a picture. She's all over the place with how she forms the letters bc her left hand brain wants her to work from the bottom up and from left to right, but school is trying to teach her the right handed way, so we get some interesting looking s's out of that.

kim22, I've heard lemon helps break apart calcium and prevent calcium stones. I know some people who will drink lemon water for this reason. May be worth looking into!
