He may not be a genius, but Raj has the best demeanor on a scale from Spicer to Sanders. That's not really saying much...

I’m getting real sick of hearing “He wasn’t serious” or “we had no idea” every time this admin is confronted with another outrageous mistake.
It’s always one or the other and it’s tired. We all learned that these aren’t acceptable excuses back in 3rd grade.

Also the Dow is down over 1k Which, based on my finely honed economic knowledge, is referred to as a fuckload.

Normally when you hire someone, don't you wait for the investigation to be complete before you hire them? No that's not how it works. They would do a baseline security check (does the applicant have a criminal record?) At that point, an interim clearance is granted. Then the full background check is done. Depending on how many foreign contacts/financial entanglements someone has, it could take quite some time to complete. It also slows things down when they dig up something that wasn't disclosed in the initial documentation (SF-86, etc). This is part of the reason Skippy's is taking 19 years to complete. Rob Porter shouldn't, in theory, be interesting enough to warrant a super long investigation.

Don't take that to mean anyone who gets hired into the federal government spends months having access to all the classified Intel. It's actually a highly compartmentalized process and basically any one person only has access to the exact, specific stuff they need access to in order to do their jobs
But someone like Staff Secretary..... would need access to a....lot. so this is a very big deal.

And the issue with Porter is not just that the investigation hadn't been completed, but he had actually been denied a security clearance because of his history of domestic violence, correct? Did I imagine that part? To my knowledge, he was never denied clearance (but new information could have come to light since the briefing). What likely happened was that the FBI was digging into the allegations and the victim got fed up and leaked to the press.

By all accounts Porter vehemently denied the allegations and I do think due process is important. So the question comes down to what John Kelly knew and when, bc Porter really should have been placed on leave or reassigned while the investigation was ongoing. This kind of thing is the whole reason we have a rigorous investigative and adjudicative process for granting access to sensitive information.

What they have said in interviews is the FBI conducts the investigation and then hands over the information to the WH to make the final determination. the WH makes the final call.

The FBI makes no determination on granting clearance.
Its unclear who at the WH makes the determination to give whatever level necessary of clearance.
Priebus was the one who was initially given the information. That doesnt mean that Porters interim clearance shouldnt have been reviewed when Kelly took over.

So the WH could decide to give someone security clearance even if they don't pass the background check?? Kinda seems that way doesnt it. at least in this admin

Priebus was the one who was initially given the information. That doesnt mean that Porters interim clearance shouldnt have been reviewed when Kelly took over. The FBI determines suitability for the Executive branch. OPM handles it for the other areas. There's a whole appeals process if someone is denied clearance and it can get kicked all the way up to the AG. Everything I can find on this suggests that his clearance was never denied, but that the allegations of DV slowed the process down. I have no idea whether the FBI would have informed his employer of that. But still, John Kelly knew in NOVEMBER, and the guy still had access to red folder documents until February. That's absolutely scandalous.

Ok I think Trump has lopped people in on the Need to Know access setup. So he hand-picked Porter to be his staff secretary, and that's basically enough to get him clearance bc he needs the info to do that job. So that's fucked up.

Or it's possible they just never made a determination one way or the other and are letting people like Skippy just roll on with their interim clearance. Which is also fucked up.

Apparently there were a bunch of people who were unable to staff at the WH last Feb because they couldnt pass the simple background check.

So I have a question. I think Porter is a despicable man for what he did—but what about the DV means he shouldn’t have security clearance? Did he lie about it? Has he actually been convicted and you can’t have committed crimes?
I feel awful sort of defending him. I’m not really. I just think I’m missing information. Why is there a connection?
