I wonder how many other wife beaters John Kelly has protected and enabled through the years. The military has a horrible issue with domestic violence so I'm sure he knew about many wife beaters but also abusers of service women.

I 100% think she is having an affair with him. I have read the rumor before.

I'd actually be really interested in seeing if the press could get access of Kellys military records and see if anyone brought to him abuse allegations while he was in a leadership position. I doubt they write that shit down though.
But I know my husband's command has had abuse allegations brought to them and they took the proper steps so it would have to be recorded somewhere.

Here’s a shocker Verizon will not be using the tax cut to expand networks or give raises but keeping it for shareholders It’s like the CEOs that said this would happen could predict the future or something. Who’d have thought it would come to pass?

Also I'm keeping my fingers crossed there won't be a shutdown. Thinking of everyone who would be affected.
Also keeping my fingers crossed that Dems stand up for Dreamers.

I truly don't understand how this whole coalition government thing works (or doesn't work). I need an explainer video with illustrations. I can give a coalition 101 if you want. ETA: There would probably be no video or illustrations, though, just words Ok, here it is in a nutshell. To pass legislation, parliaments need a majority. In countries with more than 2 parties, it (often) happens that no 1 party has a majority, which means that no party can pass legislation on its own. You can imagine the unrealistic scenario in the US Senate: Dems 40 seats Reps 38 seats Greens 12 seats Libertarians 10 seats So what now? And to make things more complicated, in parliamentary systems, the parliament elects the chancellor/prime minister. If you need 50 votes, which party is that person going to come from in the scenario above? No one will have enough votes to get their party in power, so there will be no prime minister and no personnel at the top of the ministries because no one can get 50 votes to get appointed. That's why they have to form coalitions - to get the 50+ votes needed to elect a prime minister and other political appointees plus get their legislation through. What would happen in the above scenario is the following: 1. The Democrats have the largest representation, so they get the first try at forming a coalition. 2. They would most likely approach the Greens since they have more in common with them than with the Libertarians. Together, the Dems and Greens would have 52 seats, so that would be enough. 3. They get together and talk about their major policy points. What legislation do they want to push through? Can they agree on stances on those issues? Then they write all that down in an official coalition agreement. 4. They also divvy up the prime minister position (usually goes to the largest party) and the ministries. Typically the "small" coalition partner gets to appoint the Secretary of State because it's a prestigious position, and the rest of the ministries they divide according to topics (e.g. the Greens would almost certainly insist on being in charge of the EPA). 5. Throughout the rest of the term, they work through the policy points they put down in their coalition agreement, nailing down the details and introducing (and presumably passing) legislation. And that is called a coalition government. When they write up their legislation, they work together and know that as long as all of their members vote together, they will be able to pass it all because they'll have a majority in parliament. What happened in Germany is that the division looked something like this: CDU (Merkel's party) / CSU: 35 seats SPD (formerly Schroeder's party): 20 seats AfD (right-wing): 11 seats Greens: 10 seats FDP (libertarians): 9 seats The CDU likes to make coalitions with the FDP, but that only got them to 44 seats (there are way more than 100 in the German Bundestag, but I'm simplifying here). The SPD likes to make coalitions with the Greens, but they only had 31 seats together. So the CDU tried to make a coalition with the FDP and the Greens, which would have been 54 seats, but they failed because they couldn't agree on some important policy points. Since no one wants to form a coalition with the scary right-wing people, the only other option left was CDU+SPD, which they call a "grand coalition" because it's the two biggest parties. And that's where we are now. Of course, the head of the SPD said immediately after the elections "No way will we enter into a grand coalition!" So he's eating his words right now and the base is not happy about it.

crimsonandclover, you are a wizard. I get it now! No illustrations even necessary. Great hypothetical U.S. analogy. You just earned yourself tenure.

So they are still focusing on Porter this morning? How bout we ask about why Kush still has clearance How bout we ask WHY the WH is still refusing to admit that Russia did meddle in the elections and will continue to do and why we aren't enforcing the sanctions which were veto proof How about we just acknowledge that Kelly knew he was an ass when he kept him on and this WH can't tell the truth about anything
i'm really frustrated today

I will say I am a bit surprised that the House seems to be the major hurdle for passing the spending bill whehn they were so quick to pass the last one. It seems like the Senate has been the bigger hold up as of late.

My landlord is pretty bad but I feel like Sean Spicer would actually be worse.
Although I still don't have a floor.

Making fun of Trump for thinking new Strzok texts implicate Obama in anything other than doing his job. I read about this yesterday and made the mistake of reading the comments from the mouth breathers in my area who are convinced this proves Obama is a liar because he said he doesn't interfere with active FBI investigations.

Who’d have thought it would come to pass? If I understand correctly, publicly traded companies like Verizon are legally obligated to their shareholders to a certain extent, so it's not cut-and-dried they're just being assholes, it might be a combo of assholes and also, they don't want to get sued by their shareholders. The system is so fucked up.

Well Kimberly Clark is laying off people and the statement I heard was it was a direct result of the tax cut because laying off a bunch of people is expensive and this tax cut allows them the funds to do it.

That's fucking lovely. I hope by "expensive" they mean they are giving people generous severance, at least? Awful.

There’s a guy here asking everyone “did you see an increase in your pay??” He really doesn’t like when I say that “nope! I actually have to go in and even tell them to withhold more now.” You know, because taxes are lowered for everyone 🙄

The big event is the fireworks on the Mall I think there is a parade but I've never been because you have to stake out your fireworks spot by like 9am. ETA there is also a concert at the capitol.
