I don't mind leather because if it's cold in the house I'm well covered including socks. If it's hot the cool leather feels good. But I like the look of fabric better. Pretty much this. We have leather couches but fabric accent chairs. I think my next couch will be fabric and I'll just make good use of the DustBuster on the dog hair. Right now they're not allowed on the leather couches unless invited, then only on a blanket.

We have leather furniture in the finished basement. It's good for large sleepovers with food & drinks. I don't like personally sitting on it for everyday furniture. Also, if that's going to be your only seating, I'd do a couch & loveseat over a sectional so there's some separation and you don't always feel on top of each other. This is very true. We currently have a couch, a leather recliner, and a chair and a half. I don't mind snuggling close to DH or my kids. DNW to have to snuggle up next to FIL when I'm stuck watching baseball.

What kind of space are we talking about? Main level living room? Heck no. Man cave? Sure. Dedicated basement TV room? Maybe. Hahaha.. I mean, we have a tiny house and are looking at slightly larger tiny houses (1600 vs 1400 sq ft). This would be the only couch in our home. That is way too much couch for that much house. We have 1,500sqft (with a finished basement) and our loveseat and couch pair are nice in the living room.

I personally like fabric better than leather. I think it’s more comfy. We like the microfiber fabrics because we have a dog and it’s easier to get pet hair off of than regular fabric.

Fabric. My husband prefers leather. We just bought a new leather couch. 😕

Ours is some faux leather. They’re reclining and the love seat has a center console with cup holders. I like it because it looks nice and easy clean up. I don’t like that sometimes it’s freezing when I sit on it.

I prefer leather over fabric for dog hair alone. That shit would weave its way into the fabric and it never felt clean. Now it just wipes off or vacuums off and my life is complete.

My mom has this super expensive not-leather couch that looks stark, but is actually super comfortable and the cat has tried, but can’t destroy.

DH wants one of those giant leather sectionals with all the features. I hate the feel of leather and how it is always cold or you stick to it. We settled on a smaller fabric 5 seater sectional and getting him a recliner.
Buuuut we may be getting a dog so we are waiting on actually buying the couch.

It definitely would never make it's way into this house, and likely not into any house we end up being able to buy. I'm sure he has some other equivalent that's size appropriate that he thinks would be just perfect though.

I've tried both and found I much prefer microfiber. The pleather was cold and I stuck to it and my animals destroyed it. They do make mixed fabric couches if you like the look of pleather/leather but prefer cloth to sit on. I bought one recently with microfiber for the actual seat portion but the rest is pleather.

I really hate recliners, I don’t find them comfy at all since I like to curl up on my side

@k3am do you have room for a couch with a chaise? He could still put his legs out even though it won't recline.

I know too many kids who have stabbed or taken bites of leather and pleather to bite that way. I vote fabric.

klondike, I do like the chaise. Our couch shopping us all hypothetical at this point. We're selling this house and have no idea what we'll be getting.

It's good to think about it beforehand though so you at least have an idea what direction you both want to go. Last time we moved, I ended up with a couple pieces I didn't like b/c we needed to get something. We were tired from moving, unpacking & furniture shopping and we settled.

It’s enough room for two of you to snuggle on, or to stretch out. And with the corner seating enough room to be somewhat separated from your FIL. And I like that people can turn and face our kitchen on the chaise portion of the couch.

And the chaise portion has storage underneath and I’m all for things that offer storage!

Microfiber is so basic. It’s like the knock off Uggs of couches.
And wtf to kids biting a couch.

Cloth. When we were looking I agreed to DH's request for (p)leather that he had always wanted. They were on clearance and a great deal so when they start cracking/peeling/kids ruin them. I won't feel bad about tossing them and getting good fabric couches. By then we should be able to have nice things again. Short term hit, long term win.

Fabric. We have a dark gray microfiber sectional. The cat hair doesn’t stick and it cleans off super easily for any spills. The cats have tried to destroy it and can’t. When we have less young kids and less asshole animals I want something nicer (but still fabric because I find it comfier) but for now this does the job nicely.

There is nothing more comfortable than a worn in leather couch. It’s like butter. But you have to have the space to pull it off. Most peoples’ decor seems to go better with fabric.

I much prefer fabric. I like microfiber and have done that for my last 3 couches. It does collect dog hair, but it vacuums so easily. I just think fabric is so much cozier. I don’t like how cold leather is when you first sit down. We do have a big leather recliner though, so I guess I am equal opportunity.
For our media room that is yet to be done, we will get a leather couch with recliners on the seats. Just because it seems right and I have seen ones I love at Costco.

We have distressed leather in our main living room. We have leather in the basement. I wouldn't want to sit on the leather every day. It's either cold or sticky.

I won't feel bad about tossing them and getting good fabric couches. By then we should be able to have nice things again. Short term hit, long term win. We bought fairly cheap fake leather sectional that you can use as two separate pieces if you want. They were cheap enough on sale that when my cats kill them, we can more easily replace them. The cat hair stuck to fabric is a bitch and the cat claws stuck in leather is a bitch, so it's hard no matter which way you go.

We have couches upholstered in sunbrella fabric. It is from their indoor line and stain resistant af. Also each piece of the slipcover removes separately, so if I need to was just the arm of one couch I can. It's great.

Since having kids we only do leather. I like fabric couches but they aren't practical with our 3 boys.
Also our big leather couch is super comfortable and looks fantastic. It's modern and stylish not like a lazyboy as a couch.
