I'm so, so tired. We had a couple good nights but can't seem to replicate them. I don't know what to do, gah. I probably wouldn't go to the concert, but I'm lazy. Sent from my XT1095 using Tapatalk I feel you on the inconsistency. I feel like once I learn my baby it changes again. Especially with sleep.

silvermelody thanks, that makes me feel better. He's not the greatest at nursing either but it'll just be another thing we'll have to deal with if we get to a point of not having to supplement. The LC was supportive of switching to bottle but I didn't think to ask what kind she recommends. I have Dr. Brown and Avent so I'll try them out and see what works best. I did learn about paced feeding in the BF board, thanks!

The support group went well and J gained a good amount of weight. And of course he only fussed a little in front of the LC. We may switch to bottle feeding, although I worry that it's too early. But finger feeding has been tough and especially if we are having to continue supplementing for a while and in larger quantities. Oh gosh, no to finger feeding in sufficient quantities. I've had to bottle supplement both kids early. Read up on paced feeding and ask your LC what bottle she suggests. We use Dr Brown original with Level 1 nipple to start. Both my kids prefer boob to bottle but will take bottles. I've never heard of finger feeding. DS1 was born at 34 wks and he had issues gaining weight on the boob. I used these 2 oz tubes with nipples to feed him until he surpassed this amt.

moutonrouge just keep practicing with the bottle. N was super stubborn about it. We did wind up moving to a faster level 2 nipple, but it was really that she had to want to do it. The first week I went back to work she was refusing all day until 2pm. Now she knows the routine and is happily taking 3 a day as she should. It was super stressful. Thanks! It's good to hear that other stubborn babies have worked it out. For a while we thought she didn't understand. And I've also figured out that she's not gagging because the nipple is too long/firm/whatever - that's just her response to a thing she doesn't want in her mouth after spitting it out repeatedly fails. So it's just that she really intensely prefers the boob. At least with this method, it's not a battle of the wills. Because that was going super poorly, mostly for me lol.

A few thoughts/concerns/questions...
DS was 6 pounds 1 oz at birth. He's 3 months old tomorrow. At our last checkup (his 2 month, 2 weeks ago) he was 10 pounds even. So in 2.5 months, he gained almost 4 pounds. I know that's awesome. But according to weight chats, he's in the button 5%. I know he's gaining, he has plenty of wet diapers. But I'm concerned his weight is so low. He's super long (24+ inches). I'm petite, and dad is average height and pretty skinny himself (long and lean like DS). How much should I be concerned about this?
Those of you that formula feed, how much do you give per feeding? DS has been combo fed, but I'm in the process of (slowly) going off the boob and to all bottles. (All formula after the stash is used up.) Sometimes I feel like it's a guessing game knowing how much to give him. Usually we so 4 oz every couple hours during the day, 5 in the morning and before bed. Is this on par with a 3 month old?

sterl724 Being in a lower weight percentile isn't a bad thing in and of itself. Each and every baby has their own growth curve, and as long as there aren't any sudden drops, then his growth is probably just fine. It looks like he was in the 9th percentile for weight at birth, so being in the 5th percentile at 2.5 months isn't a big drop at all. I was induced 2 weeks early because of pre-e. Would that (the two weeks, not the pre-e) make a difference in his initial percentile at birth?

I keep forgetting to check in here. DH left on Friday (he works away on rotation) so it's just me and the boys. I'm tired. Usually I make it to the last week before the exhaustion sets in, so we aren't off to a good start. H is 7 months. Feeding (solids) has been a struggle, and he refuses to drink from anything that isn't my boob, so he's not getting the water that he should be now that he's having solids, which means pooping has been a struggle as well. And I think we've started the separation-anxiety stage, so yeah.......

There will be babies in the top % and babies in the bottom %. Being at a lower % isn't a problem if LO continues along that curve without big drops. And if the ped isn't concerned, you should try not to be too!

@amc, it does make sense. He continues to grow, and the ped (well, the nurse practitioner that we see) didn't say anything about it, so I'm guessing they aren't worried. It just seems alarming as a worrier by nature ftm.

sterl724 purely BF babies should gain 5-7 oz per week between 0-4 months. So if he put on 4lbs in three months, he's doing great! N is 20 weeks and just hit 14lbs, she was 6.15 at birth. Hanging right at 32ish percent. Boys and girls also have different curves. My son was always under 40 percent too

sterl724 A is 11 weeks, and we give Enfamil AR. We feed 5 ounce bottles every 2.5-3 hours (We aim for 3 but if she starts fussing and isn't distracted by a toy we'll feed her earlier) and a 6 ounce bottle before bed. She likes to eat in the morning so she'll have her first bottle around 5:15-5:45 (whenever she wakes up) and her second bottle is usually between 7-8. Same with at night- her last two bottles are sometimes around 6:30 and then 8 pm, but she drinks it all so pedi didn't feel concerned. She does weigh ~12 pounds though (65%ile for girls). When we first switched from combo I think we did 4 ounces at a time every 2-3 hours. I did read that babies should have no more than 32 ounces per day. with our method above, she gets between 28-31 usually. Oh, and the dr browns formula pitcher is easiest for measuring out odd ounces. we make like 20-24 ounces at a time and store in the fridge.

There is spit up everywhere. We gave him a bath last night which he hates, and then he had a volcanic eruption of a spit up laying on his back which got all over his hair. We try to keep him upright for a bit after feeding but it doesn't seem to help much.

I'm really bad about checking in because M is pretty needy. It's so much easier to jump on Facebook for a few minutes at a time

I do this fully clothed so she is warm the whole time.

He did love getting his hair washed that way at the hospital but he is definitely not a fan of baths.

It seems to be a regular thing now that we are supplementing with more formula. I briefly wondered if I had too many onesies but we are definitely going through them. I need more burp cloths.

My sister would burp often during feeding, used Playtex Drop-Ins bottles, and I think he slept elevated. Not sure if yours is at that level but something to keep any eye on. Hopefully it improves as he gets bigger!

littlelion I have one nephew who spit up a ton and one that never spit up. I'd say he's somewhere in between so maybe it's an average amount? Definitely was not prepared with enough burp cloths and only have a few that were gifted or handed down. I mean who wants to buy burp cloths?

piratecat my LO is a big spitter. She doesn't seem bothered by it, and elevating after feedings didn't help. Prepare for a lot of laundry. It's starting to get better now at 3.5 months. ETA: if you have extra flannel receiving blankets they can be cut up to make burp cloths.

Downing a large coffee from DD. Alex was up at 12, 2, 4 and then 6. Each time I tried to give him his paci and get him back to sleep but he wanted to nurse. He needs to eat more in the day. I hope DC has more luck with formula. He's so funny. Even when he takes the bottle he'll make this disgusted face.
