Yes please. I need some entertainment while DD and I hang out at the pediatrician. Stupid virus. FX it's not the flu. My DD2 came down with it over the weekend. It is spreading quickly in the area  Poor mini-ByJove. I hope she recovers quickly. They think that DD has the same virus that gave DS croup this weekend. The pedi gave us a neb to use on her. Cold and flu season is such a B. |

I think you’re right, that politeness for the sake of civility needs to go. It means that important conversations that could lead to change don’t happen. However, there are a lot of people who can’t/don’t/choose not to/whatever engage in a conversation where it truly stays about the topic at hand. I have given up with some people/topics because no matter what it inevitably ends up in ad hominem attacks on me. It happens all over the place online, too, and is frustrating to read. No one will listen if they’re being personally attacked, so it’s tough. Why would someone choose not to participate in a conversation that stays on topic? No one wants to be personally attacked, but I'm not sure I understand your point. I meant they choose not to keep it on the topic at hand. Sean Hannity style. For example, I frequently hear things like “I wish I had it in me to be a liberal, but I live in the real world.” That’s a light example but one I hear a lot where I am, and it’s frustrating. It’s not even about the views. It suggests the person who agrees more with the Democratic Party is in fantasy land with thoughts that lack a basis in reality and it completely dismissed anything that might come next. I’m not sure I’m explaining well but I guess I’m saying politeness in the way of NOT having a conversation to avoid disagreements is bad, but on the other end personal attacks tend to shut down dialogue, too. |

I had a similar convo with a coworker. Shes like I dont consider myself a feminist. I was why not? being a feminist doesnt mean bra burning man hating. It means that you as a woman stand up for other women to make choices, to work or stay home, to have kids or not, to not be subject to your father or spouse, to marry or not. You can be any of those things and supportive of what you dont choose because it doesnt work for YOU but it does for them. She really had not thought about it that way. So when someone says something similar to what you posted, my response would be "why shouldnt we be supportive of those who are unable by any reason of those who can't support themselves" (and for WW fans "Be subject to one another"). In the real world we SHOULD be taking care of one another. The most expedient way would be by the government because not everyone subscribes to the same religion and this country was founded on freedom FROM religion. So we can't only rely on churches. We can't be the most wonderful country in the world if we allow our most vulnerable to languish. By allowing our children to go hungry, our vets to be homeless, our disabled to be mocked, we are only bringing shame on ourselves. |

And on that same topic, has anyone watched any of the new Chappelle comedy specials? I watched two over the weekend and I have thoughts, if anyone would like to discuss. I think he made some good points and it made me think a lot about how much the world/comedy has changed since his show on Comedy Central. YES! I've watched them both and would love to talk about. I had hoped that it would be the great unraveling of the stable genius, and that he would lose all of his friends and supporters. |

And you said your sister? I think had spoken with them, so throw in something about that. I wouldn't worry about getting too in the details upfront.
