As a tangent from that thread, fighting the socialization of politeness for women in WASP culture is a huge part of the battle. I’ve been having a lot of conversations lately with my mom about it. I don’t think that the problems with tone policing and dismissing messages because they aren’t delivered politely had ever really occurred to her. Politeness/civility was one of the key values she was raised with and it has been interesting watching her work past that.

I am so done with politeness for the sake of civility.

This morning I read a new 'rules' post from the admin of a local mom's group about how anyone who makes any comment that can be construed as disrespectful will be "removed without warning." And "If you see a post or comment you disagree with (i.e. pro-life vs. pro-choice, sleep training or not, BF vs. formula, etc.) leave it alone and realize we're all entitled to our own views." But we can't talk about them. These are much smaller potatoes than the topic at hand, of course, but forced nicety just doesn't work for me.

I think you’re right, that politeness for the sake of civility needs to go. It means that important conversations that could lead to change don’t happen.

However, there are a lot of people who can’t/don’t/choose not to/whatever engage in a conversation where it truly stays about the topic at hand. I have given up with some people/topics because no matter what it inevitably ends up in ad hominem attacks on me. It happens all over the place online, too, and is frustrating to read. No one will listen if they’re being personally attacked, so it’s tough.
