I can't tell whether my tears reading this are sorrow or rage. This is such short sightedness on the part of this White House.
I taught for a year in a community that was 95% immigrants and refugees from El Salvador and Honduras. Those families were so grateful to be here and spoke with terror about what was happening in their home countries. And their children, mostly, have never been to their parents' country of origin.

I feel like the 2020 census is already fucked too. Even without Tom whathisass. It is so huge and really isn't getting the attention it deserves because it isn't sexy and it isn't immediate.

This redistricting ruling and the one pending from SCOTUS will have a huge impact, I feel. And there are some huge states like CA very, very focused on getting fair counts and putting a lot of $$$$$ into the situation. So yes, the counting in some states might be fucked, but no more so than any other decennial census year. The redistricting stuff will happen after the data is collected, so closer to 2022. The court rulings are shedding light on the issue, and that's huge. Even if public/media attention isn't on it, there could be national checks and balances against gerrymandering.

I'm definitely pissed about the El Salvador nice. Hopefully the courts will stop it. I wish Congress would but I have little faith in them at the moment. Come in midterms.

Minerva, jkjacq thanks! Baby byjove is back at school (I mean it's daycare, but it's a preschool?) today. She came down with it late Friday night and we were able to get her started on tamiflu right away on Saturday so her fever broke on Sunday. FX the rest of us are spared.

It's been a week. One of my cousins was deported while coming back from work. He's in Tijuana now. My aunt is devastated on many fronts. But mostly, he was a main source of financial support for her. She really doesn't know what to do now.

Anyway, one thing that has been annoying me is the rhetoric that has been playing out with regards to immigration. Mostly stuff like, "their country is dangerous", "they are hard workers" "they contribute to the economy". All that is true I guess. But why can't my friends and family be granted documentation simply because they are human beings?
I know Mexico is dangerous, but it's not the only reason people are coming here. I feel a certain way when I hear these things.

Especially given the role the US government played in perpetuating and funding the atrocities of their civil war—largely the reason so many Salvadorans came here. 95% of the abuses, killings, kidnappings and torture during their civil war was found to have been committed by government forces— which included army units trained by the US. We have a pretty shitty record, especially in Latin America, of propping up horrible and violent right wing dictators. We should be welcoming everyone with open arms. It’s the least we can do.

I'm also numb about this and feel guilty that when I got the news - I sort of just sighed.
It's not the first time someone's has been deported in my family.

He was working at a Vietnamese restaurant and wiring money to his wife and kids in Mexico while staying with my aunt.
