45 is talking about our 'weak' libel laws and strengthening them to be fair in a fucking cabinet meeting. And how people cannot say things that are false without repercussion.
OMG!!!!
He is such a revisionist and liar, it makes my stomach turn.

The Trump administration has decided to go forward with nominating KT McFarland to the ambassadorship in Singapore. That means the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will get to question her. Publicly. Cory Booker, Chris Murphy and Tim Kaine are on that committee. Get yo popcorn. CHRIS MURPHY!!!!!! (clearly still catching up...)

I realize this is not news or a new sentiment, but I'm in the home stretch of What Happened and I am having the strong urge to just start throwing things.

I am so sorry about your cousin miawallace. What a terrible thing. And thank you for your great point on the arguments about danger or economics vs. basic humanity. Those other issues are real, but not the central point at all.

I had a similar convo with a coworker. Shes like I dont consider myself a feminist. I was why not? being a feminist doesnt mean bra burning man hating. It means that you as a woman stand up for other women to make choices, to work or stay home, to have kids or not, to not be subject to your father or spouse, to marry or not. You can be any of those things and supportive of what you dont choose because it doesnt work for YOU but it does for them. She really had not thought about it that way. So when someone says something similar to what you posted, my response would be "why shouldnt we be supportive of those who are unable by any reason of those who can't support themselves" (and for WW fans "Be subject to one another"). In the real world we SHOULD be taking care of one another. The most expedient way would be by the government because not everyone subscribes to the same religion and this country was founded on freedom FROM religion. So we can't only rely on churches. We can't be the most wonderful country in the world if we allow our most vulnerable to languish. By allowing our children to go hungry, our vets to be homeless, our disabled to be mocked, we are only bringing shame on ourselves. Prefacing this with: I agree with you. But Talking about social justice with hard-core or Tea Party Republicans is kind of like talking to a white liberal about institutional racism. The Republicans I have interacted with would take serious umbrage at the "we SHOULD be taking care of one another" (an ethical statement they'll read as implying only Democrats are morally conscientious) and become morally and personally defensive with some iteration of: "but I donate to charity and provide food and goods for the homeless through my church group every Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday!!" My approach would be to come armed with an arsenal of statistics about the realities of economic dispersion and social implications of specific legal enforcement. Some folks vote out of pure selfishness; taking a moral high ground regarding The Better Good is unlikely to succeed with them. And some people who won't confront or challenge themselves in the heat of the moment are likely to double-down with "fake news" retorts. But, for those people who are unempathetic simply due to lack of exposure to certain social, economic, and legal realities, my experience is that they can be swayed by statistics or heart-string-pulling personal stories. I'm not saying we ["we": by which I mean people who choose to engage] have to butter people up to consider the facts cited from transparent sources, but I do think the best way to go is awareness & avoidance of language often read to imply superiority (morally or intellectually) and which shuts people down. This is written by a person who often falls into the traps I just described. There's no empowering satisfaction from a stinging or witty conquest or a moral plea, but it's the most effective method I've found so far. Thank you for this response. I want to let you know this is helpful and I came to this realization that you need to come into it with facts. Many loud mouth republicans who defend Trump will go with .... When, where, how, what, did this happen? Where is the evidence? And if you present that information to them and it clearly falls outside their and Trumps favor it falls into "fake news" and they question the validity of the facts. So even if you come with facts, Trumps brain washing has pretty much guarded them with a fill end all be all argument of "fake news". With that they shut down and ignore anything else you have to say.
As someone else who got into arguments and lack facts it gets annoying when you have the facts and you get into the argument and you know facts are on your side, and they pull out the "fake news" card. You can see it in their reaction and face where they are thinking "Shit they are right but I don't have to take this." And using the "fake news" card they are disregarding your intelligence and respect and saying "FUCK YOU, I don't like your answer and since I don't believe it and I don't want it to be true I will regard it as shit and it never happened."
De Nile is not just a river in Africa; its the country Trump is building with his base, the Republican party, the ill informed, and the people who love to say 'Merica.

I'm late to respond but I'm so sorry, miawallace. I can only imagine how exhausted you and your family must be feeling right now. Also thank you for bringing a different perspective to the immigration discussion. This is another instance where my WW perspective was, at least in hindsight, obviously problematic. I appreciate the reframing of the conversation as much as it embarrasses me that it NEEDED reframing.

I can't tell whether my tears reading this are sorrow or rage. This is such short sightedness on the part of this White House. I taught for a year in a community that was 95% immigrants and refugees from El Salvador and Honduras. Those families were so grateful to be here and spoke with terror about what was happening in their home countries. And their children, mostly, have never been to their parents' country of origin. El Salvador Again Feels the Hand of Washington Shaping Its Fate nyti.ms/2FisL4ZThis is IMO the most purely xenophobic move yet. And that’s saying something. And it happened on Kjerstin Nielsen’s watch who no one talks about as problematic but clearly is.

They don't need a budget resolution to fund the government. They just need a deeming resolution to give top line numbers to the approps committee. If the approps committee can't pass all their spending bills, then the government shuts down.

Trump Administration Says States May Impose Work Requirements for Medicaid www.nytimes.com/2018/01/11/us/politics/medicaid-work-requirements.htmlSo I assume they are also going to impose requirements for affordable childcare, a living minimum wage, and requirements for retail, restaurants, etc to provide employees with a consistent schedule. No? Then F this.
