I don't know if of there will be much discussion on this.
I just read The Giver tonight. DS had to read it for school. He devoured it in one day and suggested I read it. I picked it up after dinner and didn't put it down until the last page.
It's a very powerful and disturbing book.
I was trying to figure out why I had never read it in school but then realized it was published after I was out of college.
I see that there are 3 more books in the series. Have any of you read them?

It’s not really a series. If you read them thinking they are you will be disappointed. It’s more of a “sister book” that has common themes of dystopia and characters that hint they could be from the other book, but nothing definitive.
As for The Giver, I used to teach it when I taught middle school. I really love that book.

I read the plot synopsis of the last one about Gabe's mom. I can't decide if I want to read more about that situation or not.

I loved this book when I read it in 6th grade and i picked it up again about a year ago. It's such a fascinating concept.
I thought the movie was pretty good. I saw it a while ago and don't recall a ton, but I remember liking it.

I own all four on my tablet. Its been a few years but I do believe eventually all of the books tie together. The Giver is one of my favorite books and is the best in the series. But I think that all four are well worth a read if you enjoyed the first.
I might be due for a reread.

I really enjoyed the book - the companion books I really enjoyed but the first is definitely the stand out. I haven’t read the 4th yet but it’s on my shelf.
The movie was quite well done given the complexity of the book and it’s ideas. I think done in any other time the effects wouldn’t have done the book justice.
Edit - movie not book.

I have a group of kids reading it, but one of them discovered the movie and then they all watched it before they finished reading. I haven’t seen the movie in protest, but I should watch it so that we can compare. Love the book.

I’m a fan of Lois Lowry and received The Giver as my Christmas Book from my 5th grade teacher.
It “bothers” me more now than when I was younger. I think it’s because I’ve matured and understand the world we actually live in can be even more messed up than this fictional book.
But I still love the book.

There were definitely hard parts to read and I look forward to discussing it with ds.
I even cried at the ceremony for the 12s when they were each told "thank you for your childhood." DS is 12 and his childhood seems so fleeting.

I also love The Giver. I read it in middle school and I think it is one of the most impactful books I have read. I remember it made quite the impression on me at the time. I feel it highlights the value of empathy and thinking for yourself in the midst of propaganda...seems especially relevant in today's times.
I'm looking forward to having my kids read it one day and discussing with them.

I loved that book but had no idea there were others that went with it.
I thought the movie was meh. I think maybe because it had been along time since I'd read the book and I had it built up in my head? Idk

I have read all four, taught the first one, and have seen the movie.
The second book (or first companion book) was super slow to me. BT loved the last two books.
Movie was good, but the book is better.

I totally wish I could sit in on ds's ELA class to discuss it with them.
I'll get him the other 3 books but I'll wait until they are done with The Giver in class.
I have a feeling they were just supposed to read chapter 1.

I loved the Giver! It came out when I was in middle school and my 7th grade teacher actually read it to our class. (That probably sounds weird for middle school— it was an experimental class.)
I didn’t know about the other books until a couple of years ago— those came out about 10 years later. I had always interpreted the ending of The Giver as Jonas and Gabe freezing to death, but going to heaven, so it was surprising and interesting (and maybe sort of happier) that Lowry actually didn’t mean her ending to be interpreted that way, since we encounter them in the later books.
I ended up getting the set, and I read them all out loud to DD when she was an infant, as part of her bedtime routine. I’d like to end up re-reading them with her when she’s a bit older and can actually understand them to an extent.

I felt that having Jonas and Gabe survive just sort of... made the ending of the Giver not as impactful. I really don't remember too much about the companion books other than I really didn't like them. I read them during PP sleepless haze with my first. I don't remember much about that time period at all.

I read it in elementary school I think. I always remember it as being the first book that affected me in such a deep and real way. It is so special to me because of that.
I loved the movie. I put off seeing it for years because I thought I would hate it. But I thought it was so beautiful and i cried like a baby during it.

Did no one but me take issue with them making Jonas older in the movie? In the book he was a preteen but in the movie he was clearly an older teen. That and the extra romance they put in between him and Fiona bothered me.
