We went out to eat with the kids and as we were about to sit down (as directed by the server) a woman sitting at the next table said “I just want to let you know that we swear A LOT”. I kind of laughed/shrugged it off but was confused about it the whole time. Maybe they just didn’t want me to sit next to loud kids? Did they end up swearing a lot? Inquiring minds want to know.

DD's 13 birthday is coming up and early this morning when she couldn't fall back to sleep she asked to cancel her birthday party because she feels like she is too old for one.
Her original idea was at the roller rink---and she was literally inviting her closest friends (so maybe 10 kids including niece/nephew) at the most.
I feel like I still see people having parties for 13---usually with just closest friends, but maybe I am wrong. I told her we will think about it and talk about it when it isn't 4am.

cool beans now what are you planning to do? Head out and look into a different job? Nope. They paid for half of it and I get a raise.

My DD turned 13 last year and she wanted to invite a few friends to go out to a nice dinner. So we did dinner and then they came back to our house for dessert. Now this year she says no one is doing parties for 14 and she just wants to go out for a family dinner, which we always do anyway. It makes me sad. I remember doing something with friends for my birthday all the way through high school.

Well, that’s the thing. We were sitting outside on a river, our kids are being kids, and I was sitting closest to them and I couldn’t really make out their conversations and I did try a few times. They weren’t being particularly quiet but it’s just not a setting where you can easily hear other people’s conversations.

DD has been to a birthday party or two this year and she had one herself. She said it was kind of stressful though and doesn’t want to do another. Kind of sad to me but I get it. They ARE stressful and it seems like birthday parties just kind of stopped after Covid. Not many are doing them anymore unless it’s a huge boy/girl status symbol party. Seems like the trend here is to do trips for big milestone birthdays instead. However, for R she should do all the things. Celebrate everything. She deserves it.

I don't consider myself a prude, and tend to swear like a sailor myself sometimes, but I have different expectations for what my children, or elderly mother for that matter, will hear depending on if we're eating at a bar or a family restaurant. But also, groups of middle aged men and/or women tend to be much louder in restaurants than kids. Get more than four at a table and it's earsplitting. Ok, maybe I am a little bit of a prude because I do find the swear word car decals to be extremely tacky, especially on parent's cars. I don't want my kid to learn to read by sounding out the "Fuck Joe Biden" bumper sticker on your truck in the car drop off line.

My guess is that they were warning you so you didn’t complain about them. We were out to eat on vacation last summer and they seated us (and several other families with kids) right around the bar for some reason. This group of guys was wasted and obnoxious, one guy in particular. They were so loud and swearing and just generally being ridiculous. It was early, probably around 5:00, so a normal time for families to be eating. I don’t usually complain, but I was getting ready to when the manager came over and apologized.

It's like a brewpub but I would consider most breweries around here to be relatively family-friendly. We were on the deck which is right on the river, so the environment is fairly loud to begin with. We eat out pretty frequently and I've never had an issue with people around us and I'm usually focused on making sure that our kids are not being too loud or disruptive so language being used around us is just not on my radar. And like I said, I can barely get my kids to stop talking long enough to listen to other people at our own table. My husband and I don't swear in front of our kids but we wouldn't expect other people to censor themselves around them, but I've not really had a bad experience yet that might affect how I would feel about it.

Two weeks until summer break. I cannot believe it. DD is pretty sad about it. It’s been a year filled with the highest highs and the lowest lows but 7th grade has mostly been good to her. She isn’t ready to say goodbye to her 8th grade band friends.

Dd adored her friend party in November when she turned 13. We did a 90s themed bowling party and now all her friends want to bowl more. It was only 7 of them but they still talk about it. Her other friends haven’t really done one but she said their parents are more the I’ll take 2 friends parents.

I have a son the same age. For his birthday, we just had a group over for a movie, video games, and pizza. Since then, his friends have had these crazy parties - including one with a limo bus.

I can't even imagine not having a party! Granted I self funded a catered sweet 16 party and made my friends dress up for it... There may have been chocolates with my initials on them ...

That is definitely a thing- if she wants to have it, she should have one. DS didn't want one for his birthday, he had different wishes, so we did that instead. But 13 is totally reasonable for a friend only birthday party.

Can you ask her what she thinks her birthday party is going to look like? Maybe she’s envisioning something very different/geared towards a younger child, maybe she doesn’t want to be sung happy birthday or have to open gifts in front of people, etc. Based on what she says you can work together to craft a ‘party’ that she is comfortable with. Fwiw around 13 is when our kids’ birthday parties started taking on more of a ‘hanging with friends and doing an activity’ focus rather than the birthday pomp and circumstance, which is also my preference.

Why is the W4 so complicated now? I made the mistake of trying IRS's withholding estimating app and I gave up because who has that kind of time?

B turned 12 in January and he wanted a much smaller party with only 5-6 friends. I think that's probably our new normal from here on out.

We're supposed to get some absolutely ridiculous storms so all after school stuff was canceled. Which includes aftercare, apparently. So now I guess I'm leaving at 2:00 since it's also early dismissal day. Not looking forward to hanging out in the basement all day with the kids and the dog.
